Artemis can't help but glance around her. Her senses are constantly on high alert, leaving her teeth on edge. She hasn't been this paranoid since before she joined the Team. She hates being in the thick of all this—leaving Wally behind, abandoning her mom and newfound niece, throwing herself into something to prevent on oncoming war. But Kaldur had needed help. No ones knew the Shadows, no one knew how to behave like one, as well as she does.

She lets her well-worn sneer drop for a moment. That was Tigress's face, not Artemis's. ❝ I'm here to watch your back, ❞ she replies, voice hushed. She knows that Kaldur is trying to be as reassuring as he can in their predicament, but he needs her support just as much as she needs right now. She hates taking away his focus. ❝ I can handle Jr. and the Terror Twins. No one knows me down here. ❞

She squeezes his hand like she would when they were still kids. Whether it's to convince him or her blonde beneath the stranger... She isn't sure anymore.

This kid could be as infuriating as his cousin. The wide smile that actually seemed to reach his eyes this time (his right side seemed to go higher than his left, just like Wally), green irises that twinkled with mischief.

She had only known him for a short period, but because he was family, he had invaded not only her living space but her life. She was suddenly buying twice as many groceries in case he came over, and poor Brucely would have to be kept close because Bart didn't seem to know how to behave around dogs. Even with her grievances for the annoying little shit, he had somehow still wormed his way into her heart.

So, she makes the effort.

Or wants to, until he says such something like that to Artemis. She has never been great at controlling her temper. But she still only raises an eyebrow.

She can't help but smile at her own thoughts. The idea of getting married and having a family... God, she wants that so bad.

She knows there is more to it than that, so she puts the knife down for a moment and looks back at him.

Feeling like the version of him from the future was his only real self, but also feeling like it’s not real and it’s his own fault for destroying that version of him . feeling like he has to put on a happy character . constantly being compared to / confused with Wally esp after his death and never being able to BE Wally west . feeling like being him instead of Wally is letting people down . that he’s a fraud and doesn’t deserve the KF title . feeling like his whole identity is just ‘hero’ and what he can do for other people . not knowing where the character he puts on ends and he starts .

Her eyes widen slightly when she is roused from her thoughts by arms encircling her. She quirks a brow upwards, and glances around awkwardly. A hand lands on Bart's shoulder when she realises he's hugging her, pushing him away slightly but enough to get him off her. ❝ The Artemis you know? ❞ she asks.

Bart had never really allowed himself to elaborate on how much he knew about them. The way he spoke about Wally, it was like he had never met him and he seemed even more awkward around Barry. Had he known the Artemis of his era? Had she been there for him like she had tried for the kids of this era?

❝ No, I didn't ❞ Artemis replies. ❝ We couldn't really rely on each other. It was everyone for themselves. Except for Junior—I wouldn't have survived if not for him. So good is an overstatement. It took a while to unlearn everything I did. It looks like it was a bit like that for you too. ❞
