The Friday before Memorial Day is designated as National Poppy Day, when Americans are encouraged to wear red poppies to honor military sacrifices.
The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.
I still remember when there were veterans who gave out/sought donations for their brothers. I always bought one.
But the rest of this history? Just learned this today 🙏…🕉️
Flanders Fields, specifically the Ypres Salient, was a major battleground during World War I, from 1914 to 1918, known for its intense fighting and devastating casualties. The region is best known for its brutal battles, including the Second Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Passchendaele, which became symbols of the war's senselessness and devastation. The poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae, inspired by his experiences in the area, further solidified the region's place in history and remembrance 🙏…🕉️
In Flanders Fields
by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields 🙏…🕉️
Someone remarked that this photo may offend a certain group of people in this country, and around the world. I really couldn’t care less! You’re welcome to share it.
Seriously!
No $hit.
He makes a good point lol
Advice From An Old Farmer:
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.
Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.
Words that soak into your ears are whispered, not yelled.
Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight.
Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.
Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.
It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.
You cannot unsay a cruel word.
Every path has a few puddles.
When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
The best sermons are lived, not preached.
Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway.
Don’t judge folks by their relatives.
Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.
Don’t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain Dance.
If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’.
Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.
The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with watches you from the mirror every mornin’.
Always drink upstream from the herd.
Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.
Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.
If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around.
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.
Most times, it just boils down to common sense.
In the face of intense enemy fire, U.S. Marines from the Fifth Marine Division work their way up the volcanic sand slope from Red Beach One, on the island of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945.
They slowly advanced towards the base of Mount Suribachi which had become completely hidden in the background by smoke.
