bacc exhibition MAK Artist Interview- Mute Mute
Mute Mute (est.1999, Chiang Mai), the culturists from Chiang Mai, consists of people from various fields who share distinctive interests and experiences. The group focuses on current social issues along with elusive definitions of many things that vary with human and society's ever-changing tendencies. The means of working are not fixed but will be in the harmony with the requirement of general people in their ordinary lives. Past works of Mute Mute include Brand New Art project, Creative Disaster Aid Center (Bangkok University Gallery, Bangkok 2010) and Run For No One (Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Bangkok 2012). All members of the group work on their own independent interest, while at the same time come together to join in on-call projects. Mute Mute members currently work and live in Chiang Mai. RUN...
In the society where there are different thoughts and ideas, sometimes, with conception of ethics, morality and Buddhist ideology, those different thoughts and ideas are viewed and treated as some kind of illness, leaving them hard work to become accepted. Likewise, numbers of campaign launched for AIDS patients reflect the desire to be in attention and desire to be taken good care of. And if those general marathon campaigns are about spending spare time for others, then 'Run for No One' is about spending spare time for the individual selves, for differences and their own illness, to get others' attention and make them realize that differences are normalcy. title: Run for NO ONE project: YOU ARE NOT ALONE video: Tanate Makkasakul music: Afternoon - Bed Trip production by Mute Mute

RUN FOR NO ONE POSTER
RUN FOR NO ONE (2012) 17 March - 20 May 2012 Bangkok Art and Culture Centre Run For No One “You are alone” is the feeling of aloneness that could rest on a positive and negative ground. This feeling occurs to everybody even to the least lonely person or to those who are constant surrounded by numbers of people. The fundamental need for human other than basic survival needs, other than happiness, other than love, is an acceptance we need from those around us. At times, this need distort an authentic version of us to fit ourselves to walk along the paved road of society. The need for acceptance teaches us to fear and fear has become a base in which we live our lives. The need of acceptance clouds the visibility in seeing a real reason for others to exist, and at the same time exemplify our insecurity that needs a safety home in someone else’s conceptions. If this is a case, then we all have a disease, not just HIV infected people.

Brand New 2010 Project at Bangkok University Gallery, Bangkok / July 2010
We kicked off the project, Creative Disaster Aid Center with “Stream of Generosity ♥ Creative Thailand”, a mocked up special TV program. CDAC is one part of Brandnew 2010 and established to reveal the unnoticed side of the policy to promote Thai GDP with creative economy. While we ask creatives to create more, why their lives get more suffering? That’s the disaster we might forget to care before. Let’s share your creative experiences to re-design the relationship between creatives and creative consumers through CREATIVEDISASTER.ORG

Mute Mute is the office of a group of culturalists which is affluent with creative abilities, ambiguities and chaos. The experimental office based in Chiang Mai and was established to manage possibilities for generating culture by compromising capitals, creativities and aesthetics.
UNMUTING MANIFESTO “A lot of names remain unknown in Thailand despite good works and interesting ideas that can be developed to many discourses, increasing varieties to this society; however, no one has ever heard them, as if those voices are muted. They exist, but are left unattended. New discourses are the essential engine that drives the social culture and open a door to adjust “the quality of life”, especially the critical ideas which creatively solve social problems and turn into new possibilities for living. Many ideas from Thai creativists often fade away silently because the lack of the crucial factor for social presence such as the “cultural space”. Especially, those that still exist have been supported by limited frame of conception. Consequently, the different culture presentation is very unlikely to happen.
A group of new generation culturalists residing in Chiang Mai, coming from different fields of study, skills and interests, had realized these conflicts. As a consequence, they created the project to expand cultural diversity by forming a group called MUTE MUTE aiming at bringing out the silent idea and pressing the button to release their voices into society. The shared fundamental conceptions, we believe, are the diverse methodologies of thoughts, which lead to the enhancement of interchanged information between people and the developed updated series of wisdom in each period of time. This might be better than the instant familiar knowledge that had been managed to cope with the problems with the lack of understanding towards the real complication of society. We have to bring forth the learning culture and open people’s minds to the differences as to gain comprehension between communities and provide the appropriate spaces for each presentation of interesting ideas such as artworks, designs, cultural projects, forums and researches to community. This includes distributing the knowledge forward through various kinds of media so that it will strengthen the social information base for analyzing and forming new possibilities in the future.
Furthermore, those cultural activities likely depend on capital and coordinate with government sector and private sector, which also needs concrete organization to systematically manage to reach its achievement. For this reason, the culturalists from MUTE MUTE take shares of a semi-experimental company. We focus on both collecting cultural and economical profits interdependently through recreating many projects harmonizingly between capital, creativity, aesthetic and community. The company’s incomes will be spend on inside activities and organizing space for thinking presentations from different groups of people to make the cultural profits flow through communities and allow sustainable creation on truth in the local areas relating to global context.”
