"my job at the bar?" he feels the anxiety begin to well up in his chest, he's not used to being asked about how he'd feeling so directly. as richie continues on, mac just continued to smile at him. he has to pretend like everything is okay, because if he did that everything would be okay. right?

"nah man, you've got it all wrong." if he brushes it off, maybe richie would stop pressing him about it. "my friends ... they're like. they're great! they're just trying their best, y'know?" they were dickheads, all of them. mac knew that, he thought it often. but he'd never talked about it before. "look. i've known dennis-" he starts with dennis, and he doesn't really know why. "- and dee and charlie they all. i mean i grew up with them, bro. i know you knew them or wharever for a little bit but, we spent a lot of time together. you just don't get it. it's just how they are. it's fine man, really."

"dude, look. i really get it. like, i fuckin'..." there's a bit of an annoyed sigh, though, it's not directed at mac. it's because of the fact that this actually requires sharing shit. being open, and whatever. "like, uh. mikey. had me selling fuckin' cocaine in the back alley. because he couldn't manage this place, and a million other reasons. i fuckin' love the guy. seriously, but. it wasn't uh. sustainable."

it feels like he's done something wrong here. talking ill of the dead, or whatever. mikey would get it, though. "and i just wanna make sure uh, that what you're doing is sustainable. and that you don't feel like shit all the time, every day. because like, that shit wears on you." he's speaking from experience. that much is obvious.

he thinks for a moment that he might have done something wrong, he can't think of any other reason why richie would have asked to talk to him in the back office. brows furrow as he mentions a check in, and mac clears his throat. "a ... check in?" what the fuck was that? he sits down in the chair that was offered to him, listening as richie continues on. oh, paddy's ...

"oh, no like! i'm doing totally fine, man." he does what he always does, smiles and puts on a brave face. it was always easier than accepting reality. "you guys totally make me feel appreciated here, you don't have to worry about that." he leaves out paddy's intentionally, because for a moment he wonders if he was appreciated there. his mind sits with the thought for a moment, and he realizes that he hadn't really felt appreciated before when it came to 'work'. not until carmy, not until he met all of them. he realizes that the only person that made him feel appreciated at paddy's was charlie, and even he had been helping out at the bear more than paddy's (he doesnt mention it, though).

he does appreciate that, and he gives a half smile, but it's not what he's talking about. "well uh, i'm mostly talkin' about with your other job." and he already feels like he's overstepping, which is such a weird feeling. everyone else is always in each other's business. he knew tina's life inside and out, and even sydney was starting to open up a little bit more! but not mac. not yet.

"listen, i'm really not good at all this uh, beating around the bush kind of shit. so i'm just gonna say it. your friends, aside from like, charlie, they're kinda dickheads. i've had my fair share of dickhead friends, don't get me wrong but uh... doesn't mean i wanna see you making any of the mistakes i did. would rather you skip over that fuckin' part. so. you good?"

he won't lie. neil has always been a bit of a nuisance to him. it was kind of how everyone treated him, and who was richie to go against the grain? still, since everything with mikey, neil had been a friend. shit, maybe even a better friend than some of the people richie considered friends. it was weird. the guy really did have heart, or whatever shit he had been trying to say.

"yeah, guess so." he's been wanting to apologize, but instead, he just helps the other with his tie. "you look good, dude. seriously. all professional, and shit. whole new neil, or whatever." whole new richie, too. he hopes.

"yer not bothering me." though the way he says it is rough around the edges. he doesn't mean for it come out sounding that way, but it's just the way that he and carmy have always communicated. it reminds him of mikey, because mikey was the beloved brother. he just wanted to copy some of that. keep it alive.

eyebrows furrow. "seriously, dude. you look like you're having a hernia, or something. what's goin' on?" leans against one of the counters, and arms cross. oh, he's being serious now.

"yeah, my dad fuckin' sucks." he almost sounds proud of that fact. he grabs a cigarette, before offering the box out to mac. they were staying late, but by choice this time around. sometimes, they had to force that fucker carmy to go home, so someone else could clean up or something. they weren't gonna get anywhere if his brain burst into flames.

and mac had stayed behind to help. was this why? "what, carmy not tell you about my family already? i was basically raised by his mom."

richie was really not the guy to ask people to stay late and talk. usually, he was the type to air his grievances by yelling them out, or ask a question in a small passing moment if he needed to. but this shit is like, important and whatever. so he's trying to be proactive. every second counts. maybe if someone had done this with mikey...

that carmy and richie fight in the finale was devastatingly beautiful. first the setting of carmy being stuck in the inside and richie being outside helping to run the shit. then, carmy being in the darker light while richie is in the lighter one. and everything that was said in the fight proved to me more how much they are family because only family can know this much where it would hurt and only family would still keep loving you after all this. like the way richie hits carmy by calling him donna was so unexpected i gasped. and you can see richie immediately regrets it but the damage has been done and carmy just starts losing it. also the way richie was trying to be real with carmy saying somebody has to tell him this shit as the pseudo-big brother he is. and then carmy keeps on going and hits richie with his kid but richie doesn’t stay with it all that much, because it comes down to michael again. in the show, it’s like the emptiness michael left is so tangible it’s crazy BUT it’s especially tangible when it comes to richie and carmy. and so, richie goes back to michael and the funeral and the fact that carmy wasn’t there but carmy goes on and on attacking richie saying richie is obsessed with his family. what does richie do then, keeps shouting i fucking love you over and over again. and it was such an unexpected choice like that destroyed me. but that’s the bottom line. they are gonna rip each other off but richie loves carmy so much, and I believe he knows he stepped over the line with the donna comment, and that carmy doesn’t mean anything he says at that moment. because they also had their whole development throughout the season. because they are fucking family.
