“There is no duty more indispensable than that of returning a kindness”

“The willingness to reside in our distress, no longer resisting what is, is the real key to transformation. As painful as it may be to face our deepest fears, we do reach the point where it’s more painful not to face them. This is a pivotal point in the practice of life.”
— Ezra Bayda
#BeKind21: You’re worth it.
Today’s #BeKind21 message is brought to you by our partners at The Mighty.
In a world that often weighs us down, kindness is the buoy that allows us to come up for air. It’s like an internal floating mechanism, a practice that, when genuinely employed, gives us a reason to better the way we see and interact with the world around us.
A lot of the time, discussions around kindness primarily focus on external factors. But at The Mighty, a safe and supportive community for people living with or affected by health conditions or disabilities, we understand the importance of showing kindness toward our bodies, minds and emotions.
When I was first diagnosed with a chronic illness, I left little room for internal kindness and focused all of my time and energy on others – almost as if I was trying to prove how strong and unfazed I was by my “new normal.”
But I slowly learned that to be kind is not to chase an unattainable luxury. It’s not something that you can put on the back burner for long periods of time. Kindness to ourselves – to every part of us – is an instrumental mechanism to becoming a better and fuller person. When we treat our bodies, thoughts and feelings just like we would a struggling stranger, we make a statement about what it means to prioritize our own worth so that we can show others just how much they matter, too.
Your kindness challenge today: Do one kind thing for yourself. Go ahead and spend a minute (or two) figuring what you really need, what’ll make you lighter right in this very moment. Celebrate a small win, show yourself forgiveness or write yourself a love letter. You’re worth it.
P.S. Invite a friend to join the challenge: bornthisway.foundation/bekind21.
your mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of and you don’t have to apologise for it
