Yogtober Week 2: Science and Magic
hi its me the rythna guy. this is angst :)
(specific warnings: implied character death/disappearance. whatever happened to rythian yknow.)
It is a crisp, cold winter morning when the letter arrives at Lalna’s door. The corners are dog-eared and damp from frost. There hadn't been a knock, and Lalna hadn't seen anyone for months, let alone a courier.
The envelope is a royal purple, with gold trims and neat, inked handwriting that spells his name and nothing else. Hand delivered, it seems.
He sets it on the side and continues about the rest of his day.
The letter is not opened until the next morning, when the golden trim catches the sunrise and Lalna suddenly remembers its existence. He tries to open it gently, too impatient to find the letter opener he knows he has somewhere, but the paper is delicate and tears with ease.
The two pages inside, off-white parchment, gently drop to the floor. The black ink is stark against the pale paper, sturdy and straight in its penmanship.
“Lalna,” it starts, “It has been some time since we last spoke and, unfortunately, this may be the last time, too.”
He gathers the pages and slumps into the nearest chair, arm hanging over the backrest.
“I fear I am unsure of how much news reaches the Brightlands, so whether you know of our progress in the Twilight I do not know. If this is the first you’re hearing of it, my apologies. If you must, ask Nilesy or Ravs. Whoever will be less likely to curse you.”
Lalna stares at the paragraph. He only knows one person who calls their world the Brightlands. “Your handwriting’s gotten better.”
“We are pushing into the final stages of our newer goal. The TEEF, as Zoeya insists on calling it, is expanding further than we could’ve ever anticipated. We are doing our best to stop it, to contain it, but I must advise that you not visit the End for any purposes until an all-clear has been provided.
Lalna, this is not a call for help. I have already sought that out. This is simply two things that I need to tell you, specifically.
One: I am sorry. Take that how you wish.
And two: If, by chance, you see me again, then you must not mistake me for the man I was. Try not to dwell on this. It will make sense should the situation arise. We hope it doesn’t have to come to that.
Again, if you need filling in, ask someone. I regretably don't have time to write all of it down, again.
Yours, with hope,
Rythian Enderborn.”
The letters are placed on the table, as delicately as glass. Lalna exhales, a breath held back lest it ruin the pages, or smudge the ink. He runs a hand through his hair.
“You’re a bastard, you know that?” He says into his empty house, “You vanish for, what, 10 years? And then just- And then send this?”
He feels his head pounding, and his heart, and can’t decide if he wants to frame the letters or burn them.
“What the fuck do you mean?”
The words stare back at him, silent.
He wants to cry. Or punch someone. Probably Rythian.
Softly, he picks up the pages again. “Only you would write a goodbye like this. Fucking hell. Okay.”
They’re folded neatly back into the remains of the envelope, and then slot into his storage. He lost track of Nilesy not long after Rythian vanished, but he knows where Ravs stakes his business.
He packs a bag, finally changes his clothes, and starts walking.
