I just really love the idea of like:

Rythian and honeydews retelling of exploring the mountain island structure: the alien architecture is so fascinating, the ancient tech runs like nothing we've ever seen before. they must have been incredible

and then lalna's is like: so on the first level they had these display cases and the scanner called one a 'doomsday device' and when I expressed purely scientific interest in it I was dragged away cruelly by xephos

#i havent written in so longggg i want to badly. but my keyboard is so loud (making excuses)#also having Rythian be the defacto main pov is fun because he Would be verbose in his retellings

realising how much work I actually did on this au last year.

Rythian, a xenolinguist, and Lalna, head engineer, are in one life pod. The explosion damaged the lifepod, giving Lalna a pretty gnarly head wound and partial memory loss. They land in the safe shallows.

Nanosounds, (who I cant decide a job for), lands in the dunes and has her lifepod destroyed by a reaper leviathan. However, she's not gonna give up that easily, and manages to set up a small base in a cave system.

Zoeya, xenobiologist (specialised in fungi and botany studies) lands in the sea treaders path, and sinks to the ocean floor. She survives there for almost two weeks before her distress call is answered.

Xephos, the captain, and Honeydew, first mate, land in the mushroom forest close to the mountains, and set up a small base under a large natural arch. They have lost several seamoths to the nearby reaper.

the terms and conditions are as follows:

following the unscheduled crash landing of the aurora, only 4 of the lifepods reported life.

between those 4 pods were 6 survivors, including the captain, his first mate, and an assortment of scientists and engineers.

everyone else on board perished either in the initial explosion or due to lifepod failure.

the crew was reported to have left the planet with 7 on board, though due to the crews lack of communication with Alterra, the identity of the 7th can't be verified.

the thing about subnautica aus is that they really have to suck for everyone involved, right? very few survivors wracked with major survivors guilt, stuck on an alien ocean planet with no quick or easy escape route. the ship that comes to rescue you is shot out of the sky. it's a bad time.

but, that kinda ups the appeal of having a small group. just 6 of them. out of a crew of likely hundreds of people. you're still alone, horrifically isolated, but you still have people to come back to. even before they find out about the precursors, there's someone they care about enough to save.
