Coming to you live, another thing I found outside on the ground. Actually, this one I found trapped between the wheel and the spring in the wheel well of a parked car. It's apparently quite upset I kept it from dying gloriously in an engine block.

I love tumblr bog culture so much and I love Seamus Heaney’s bog bodies poems so much and I think I wasn’t prepared for seeing a bog body in real life in a museum because they really are actually dead bodies—which of course is the whole point

And obviously Heaney’s bog body poems are all about violence but also they’re about the transformative—maybe—experience of looking at the bog bodies and encountering the history—or at least the tollund man is—and I think that I had always been so distracted by the beauty of the poetry and the sort of wonder of the preservation… maybe at expense of the like awfulness of it all

And I do think it’s not interesting or original to say that poetry lied to me by making violence beautiful because that is one of the Things that poetry famously does. But it really did get me!
