I just really find the fact that the creator of dragonball has stated that Goku canonically cannot feel any kind of love, just ‘companionship’, to be a extremely interesting fact. Like, if his family died he’d be like ‘No!’ and then he’d get over it fairly quickly as if they were only just acquaintances. Same goes with the rest of his friends.
The series creator apparently doesn’t like the anime’s portrayal of Goku. They always cast Goku as a hero, when in the manga he’s really only ‘saving people’ as a side bonus that comes with fighting a stronger opponent. He doesn’t purposefully go in to save anyone unless there is a fight happening at the scene.
So, If Goku hadn’t hit his head, he would’ve just been another Raditz. And it also explains why he’s rather cruel towards Gohan and neglectful towards Chichi.
Apparently Vegeta is the actual exception to his own species. He actually genuinely loves his family, -a rare trait only Goku’s mother was proven to have- whereas Goku is apparently literally unable to have those feelings. It’s kind of ironic; Vegeta is probably the one that would be the most ashamed and resentful to admit he has those kinds of feelings.
Source, if anyone was interested: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/translations/wired-japan-1997-akira-toriyama-interview/
I can’t help but think you’re just wrong about Goku, describing him as a downright amoral person. Although it’s true Goku does not fit in the classic hero category, he’s far from being a person who meaningly cares about no one by himself:
(1) When offered by Black (not Goku Black) to join the Red Ribbon army, he rejected the offer stating that what they did was awful. (2) Goku never got over Krillin’s death by King Piccolo’s offspring, not until he avenged his death by penetrating the evil Namekian. (3) Before Raditz kidnapped Gohan, Goku was ordered to pile up a high amount of corpses in exchange for his son. We all know how that ended. (4) Right after Vegeta’s death by the hands of Frieza, Goku swore to finish him off for what he did to both Saiyans in the past and Namekians in the present. Much later, after he became a Super Saiyan for the first time, Goku claimed that just like the Saiyans paid their crimes by their destruction, Frieza would pay for what he did right then. (5) Right before the final fight against Majin Buu in the Planet of Supreme Kai, Goku was fully aware that his and Vegeta’s defeat would bring the end of the universe. After that he went right into Super Saiyan 3 (in the manga) to fight Majin Buu.
Why are people saying this? We see numerous instances where Goku gets very upset when his friends get hurt or killed, we see Goku TWICE SACRIFICE HIS OWN LIFE TO SAVE HIS SON, Goku in his own words said he loved Chichi when Vegeta explained that Saiyans have a thing for feisty gals in Dragonball Super. Stop taking an interview out of context and viewing it through Western Culture lenses.
Toriyama simply meant Goku sees his family differently than Vegeta. Vegeta views his family as extensions of himself, a very Japanese way of thinking. Goku on the other hand DOESN’T have the Japanese mindset when it comes to his family. He sees them as individuals. Gohan and Goten and Chichi’s accomplishments are there’s and Goku doesn’t see their accomplishments as his just again as their own. Vegeta on the other hand is different. His family is an extension of him. The Buu Saga even shows this from a simple throw away line that was a joke but perfectly illustrated what I’m talking about.
*Goten goes Super Saiyan in his fight with Trunks* Vegeta: That’s no fair Kakarot! Goku: Hey don’t look at me, he did it.
Vegeta sees Goten as an extension of Goku hence his annoyance, Goku meanwhile does not view his son in that regard, hence why he’s confused why Vegeta is so annoyed.
Also why is this website says “friendships are just as important as familial and romantic love👏👏👏” but the second Toriyama says Goku is different from the Japanese sense in terms of how he sees his family and refers to them as companions….that’s taken as suddenly his family is far less important to him????
Are you kidding me?
Look at how Goku reacted when Krillin died in both the King Piccolo and Namek saga. Look at how Goku was protective of his friends and got very annoyed when someone hurt them. Look at how Goku got even more upset when he discovered King Piccolo killed his Master Roshi. Look at how Goku reacted when he came to the battle in the Saiyan Saga only to find out nearly all his comrades have been killed. Look at how as a child even though he barely met Upa, he felt personal responsibility to help the boy because his father was killed and Goku did everything in his power to help the boy.
Remember how his only family-Grandpa Gohan-died when he was very VERY young. I think it’s obvious Goku became quite attached to his friends who helped give him a new life. One where it was filled with adventure and fun and most importantly-company and companionship-something he didn’t realize he was without FOR some time until Bulma came along. I think it’s safe to say, that for Goku, his friends became his family that filled the void in his life that was once occupied by his adoptive grandfather.
So if Goku obviously cares this much about his friends, his companions-mind you…if he views them almost like his family…then is it that much of a stretch to say Goku sees his family like his companions? People who became extremely important to him and became his new family?
Goku is not a neglectful father or husband PLEASE STOP projecting your western interpretations on a Japanese fictional character who the Japanese culture strongly disagree with that interpretation. As they are so baffled why the western fans think Goku is a neglectful father when they all (and the manga and anime even acknowledged this too) think Goku downright SPOILED Gohan.
Goku isn’t your traditional hero. He’s no goodie goodie. He’s no messiah archetype. He’s no Superman/Clark Kent. He’s an unconventional type of hero, BUT HE IS A HERO! He does love his friends and family and sacrificed a lot for them, even DYING TWICE! And Vegeta was a crappy person in general AND father/husband UNTIL the end of the Buu Saga, even Vegeta acknowledges this fact he was so awful until that moment he decided to stop being a tool and finally do something for someone other than himself. Vegeta even mirrors a line when he sacrificed himself against Buu-that Goku used before he sacrificed his life against Cell. Both Goku and Vegeta asked their firstborn (Gohan/Trunks) to take care of their mother for them-and let their sons know how proud they are of them. The parallel was clearly intentional. It was to show us the audience Vegeta had truly developed into one of the good guys finally by having him do an action and even say a line very similar to our main character who previously sacrificed his life.
Edit: Also if Goku has no concept of love and only sees his family as less than important then please explain this reaction to being reunited with his deceased Grandfather.
https://youtu.be/xJHTIJeQ6TQ
That Goku had no concept of love and obviously thought so little of Gohan Sr. that he hunted down the four star ball to keep in reminder of him-gave it to his son-and named said son after his deceased grandfather. Oh wait that’s an example of proving Goku is quite clearly capable of love. Whoops.
//Just a little add on to all of this. During the Future Trucks arc of DB Super, F. Trunks performs mouth to mouth on F. Mai to resuscitate her. Goku reacts with surprise to this, and doesn't seem to know about the concept of kissing, much to Vegeta's disbelief. Goku is either an... incredibly naive and innocent person, or a singularity of stupidity.
Given his recent actions in the latest arc of Super, it's shifting further and further in favor of stupid.
//It's been 2+ weeks since my comps HDD kicked the bucket. It sucks that I'm missing out on SAB in GW2, and falling behind on my FP farming in Smite, but at least it gives me a chance to replay FF7 after like 15 years and binge watch series on Netflix.
I seriously can’t get over this
They’re taking the initiative to oppose fascism in their own community, refusing to let it be tolerated, even in a “weird” setting. I think this is pretty cool. It may seem weird, but hey, they’re speaking to the nazis in their community using their language.
Nazis must be ostracized. There cannot be any cracks where they can hide.
a lot of furries are lgbt too just saying… of course they would want to fight it?
@yeen-spirit
So they made a fursona to stop furries?
//...You guys ARE aware that the so called Nazi Furs are just uniform fetishists, right? This is just going to turn into another Burnt Furs
I completely love that the new update acknowledged Aidan and Zho from the original Guild Wars. So much of the passive henchie activity was centered around Mhenlo and Cynn that it was easy to forget about the quiet rangers, who always sat away from the rabble together enjoying nature or practicing their aim. It is also a nice callback that Aidan’s descendant Noran lives in a secluded house and area, as we first come across Aidan in the secluded area of presearing Wizard’s Folly. So happy Arenanet is weaving in these type of callbacks into their game!
//I was SOO HAPPY when I stumbled upon Noran and read his dialog. I’ve been wanting to learn the fates of the GW1 henchmen adventurers and meet their possible GW2 descendants for years now. It’s tragic that much like his ancestor Aidan, Noran has terrible luck when it comes to family.

This is important content cuz it touches on one of the more overlooked aspects of the recent altright encroachment: a lot of it is about doing it “for the lulz”. Making traditionally marginalized groups angry or reactive is a form of entertainment for some, and the fact that happens to work towards reclaiming white male supremacy for them is more of a secondary bonus. That’s what makes it so difficult to logically or “correctly” combat it; the most forward face isn’t an ideology or philosophy, so to speak, but rather a form of indulgence. It’s not a grand mission, it’s a game they play.
This is so fucking accurate.
Citations desperately needed. So much of this is coming across as paranoid psychotic stream of mental diarrhoea.
Also, collectivising “geek culture” as being “right wing” is pushing it, since - in the example of GamerGate alone - it was shown that most GamerGaters were on the left. It’s also worth noting that “geek culture” is not a political environment. It’s like trying to imply that knitting circles or gardening clubs have political agendas.
Generally-speaking, gamers just want to play and talk about games, and discuss politics only when they’re not immersed in the “gaming zone”. The same applies more broadly to geeks and geek culture.
It’s the far left which has taken to using the words “fascist” and “Nazi” with gay abandon (to describe anyone further right than they are), to the extent that both of those words are starting to lose their sting in a Boy-Who-Cried-Wolf-esque scenario. This can only end badly.
The short version response to the OP: what a load of bullshit.
//The so called alt-right was nothing but a very fringe, racist political group until a bunch of stuck up bloggers, journalists and college students got huffy when they DEMANDED that Geek Cultures gentrify to suit their sensibilities, and didn’t get the enthusiastically compliant response they wanted. Thus started the 2+ years of incestuous smear pieces calling us every bad word in the book in a desperate attempt to brow beat the various Geek Cultures into submission. Not surprisingly, this didn’t work because society at large has been trying to do it to us for FUCKING.DECADES!!!
So now that Donald Trump has been elected, we’ve been blamed for it (a LAUGHABLE suggestion) and lumped into the Alt-Right because we won’t march in lockstep, leaving the actual Alt-Right wondering “who the fuck are these guys!?”. The people that smeared us with that label are tilting at windmills now, and in their rampant hysterical flailing they’re creating the “radicalized“ monsters they so fear because normal people are looking at them and thinking “What the fuck is wrong with these people!?”

Sylvari post-Mordremoth (aka where has it all gone wrong?)
SPOILERS FOR HEART OF THORNS CONTENT. ALSO WARNING: THIS IS LONG.
As I promised, a post looking at the present day Sylvari in a post-Mordremoth world and why ArenaNet basically screwed the pooch on this one. Or, at least, why I feel they do. Some of you might disagree - and that’s cool! You’re welcome to reblob and say why or send me an ask.
Anybody who plays Sylvari and, in particular, roleplays them will have noticed and realised that we have a bit of an issue on our hands. If you’re playing to present-day-Tyria standards, we now live in a post-Mordremoth world! Hurray! Right? Guys? Hurray…?
The truth is, the ending of Heart of Thorns left a lot to be desired. ArenaNet’s continued focus on Sylvari as their new race - which caused problems in the main story with Trahearne being an unfortunate scapegoat for poor writing, and caused problems for Heart of Thorns because it alienated non-Sylvari mains even more - has in actual fact worked against their favour. Due to their poor writing and the lack of spacing between giving races an equal focus, the end of Heart of Thorns didn’t just bring about an end to Mordremoth, but it heralded an end to ArenaNet even remembering that Sylvari actually exist at all.
Sylvari players are now stuck in a very strange place. The Avatar of the Pale Tree is still as unconscious as ever, with her physics-defying leaf dress and all, and none of the NPCs in the Chamber react as if there is actually anything wrong in the first place. This is a huge oversight - I can’t state that enough - because it means we have no answers to questions that are genuinely important.

//Anet and Closure don’t get along well. Some of us Gw1 fans are still waiting to learn the fates of certain GW1 characters, beyond the obvious fact that most of them died (Devona, Mhenlo, Aiden, Cynn, Eve, Razah, EVENNIA!!!!)
There's this topic in my country about quesadillas. A lot of people, more at north of the country, says that a quesadilla should have cheese inside, since the word quesadilla comes from "queso" (cheese), but in southern states they make and sell quesadillas with and without cheese, since they say that a quesadilla doesn't need to have cheese. What do you think?
I’d say that without cheese probably isn’t bad, but if cheese is part of the origin, then it might be better to have it in.
A hamburger’s still a hamburger even if you don’t add tomatoes, but they’re kind of a staple, y’know? It feels weird leaving out an ingredient that’s just always been there, and fits well with all the other ingredients.
//How the hell do you make a quesadilla without cheese!? Cheese is one of the primary ingredients! It’d be like making a hamburger without a meat patty or buns, a tamale without masa! What is this insanity!?

Character thoughts on Updated Warwick
“I find that I feel an odd mix of pity and revulsion towards the... creature known as Warwick. Pity because no feeling thing should have something so perverse and cruel done to them against their will. Yet I feel revulsion because of his savagery, and because he reminds me of what a man named Morvere sought to do to my own people... although I suppose it would be more fair to direct that portion of my disgust toward the monster that made Warwick. May Bi’Baxs baleful gaze fall upon that man and condemn his every endeavor to failure!”
What do you call the male version of a “Mary Sue”?
The protagonist.
OH THE GLORY OF THIS SHADE AND THE TRAGEDY OF THIS TRUTH
Um, no, male mary sues are called gary stus. So yes, there can be terribly written male protags as well as terribly written female protags.
And if you want examples, look no further than Eragon,Wesley Crusher, and Anakin Skywalker (mainly before he became Darth Vader). These aren’t well regarded or beloved characters, so stop acting like there is some sexist double standard when we call out shitty characters as shitty.
