"You're Losing Me" Analysis
This song is about that moment in a relationship when you realize that while the two of you may work well together and have chemistry when everything is peaceful, when conflict arises, the only one fighting for reconciliation is you.
(Disclaimer, everything I'm about to say is speculation and my interpretation. I also don't advocate any online hate towards Taylor or Joe. I'm just doing this for fun)
"You say 'I don't understand' and I say 'I know you don't"
This line opens the song on a sad note. Taylor is explaining (through example) that although she fully understands and knows Joe, he doesn't know her. He doesn't understand her thought process or her emotions, but she knows his.
"We thought a cure would come through in time, now, I fear it won't
Remember lookin' at this room, we loved it 'cause of the light
Now, I just sit in the dark and wonder if it's time"
Here, Taylor reminisces on the past and how much brighter things used to be. The line about the cure implies that this rough patch has been going on for so long that she doesn't think anything can bring them back to that.
"Do I throw out everything we built or keep it?
I'm getting tired even for a phoenix
Always risin' from the ashes
Mendin' all her gashes
You might just have dealt the final blow"
This section further solidifies that idea. Taylor considers jumping in, taking control of the situation, and fighting for the relationship as she's done in the past (The Great War, Afterglow), however it seems that the rough patch has been going for so long that the amount of energy it would take to fix it is too much for just her alone to handle. She can't mend all her gashes by herself... so maybe he will step in and help?
What strikes me about this repeated phrase in the chorus is how the focus is on HIM losing HER, not the other way around. In most of her other breakup songs, Taylor has described her losing her partner (Maroon, ATW, I Wish You Would, Back To December, The 1) but not this time. He is losing her. This implies a sense of apathy. She isn't heartbroken over the breakup, because there's nothing valuable she feels she's losing. All the love and passion in the relationship died out ages ago, she's over it.
"My heart won't start anymore for you"
Same thoughts as the last line. She isn't in love with him anymore. The spark died out, and she doesn't have the energy to re-light it again, only he can step in and do that. The question is, will he?
"Every morning I glared at you with storms in my eyes. How can you say that you love someone you can't tell is dying? I sent you signals and bit my nails down to the quick. My face was grey, but you wouldn't admit that we were sick"
Here, Taylor seems to reference the same type of scene that "exile" paints. "you never gave a warning sign / I gave so many signs". She is giving her partner all the signs that something is wrong and she needs his help, but he can't tell. It's now that Taylor wonders if her partner even knows her or loves her. She has him totally memorized, but he can't even tell she's dying.
"and the air is thick with loss and indecision, I know my pain is such an imposition. Now you're running down the hallway, and you know what they all say, 'you don't know what you got until it's gone'"
Here we have the classic Taylor Swift line where she apologizes for her anxiety/pain and says she understands it's a burden. This has always been the biggest red flag for me in her music about joe. Apologizing for her emotions and burdens once or twice is fine, but she is so constant about it in her music to him, that it made me wonder if he never reassured her. The way this line is placed in the song and the way she sings it this time almost makes her sound a little snarky, the way your mom might say "Oh I'm sorry I'm the worst mom in the world" after you critisize her.
"How long could we be a sad song, til we were too far gone to bring back to life?"
To me this line means two things.
It's a reference to all the sad songs they wrote together on folklore/evermore
It's once again telling the story of a rough patch/falling out that went on too long with neither side fighting for reconciliation.
"I gave you all my best (?), my endless empathy, and all I did was bleed as I tried to be the bravest soldier, fighting in only your army, frontlines,"
This points back to all the songs where Taylor tries to see things from Joe's perspective and apologizes for herself and her life. She gave him so much empathy in her songs and fought so hard to understand him and keep him.
"don't you ignore me, I'm the best thing at this party"
This line sounds like a Bejeweled reference to me, which totally changes that song now as well. The image I get is two people at a party, on opposite sides of the room, not interacting with each other. Yet Taylor is trying to get his attention, showing off, being the center of attention, yet he is ignoring her. Maybe he's talking to other girls or other friends, but either way, her efforts to impress him aren't working.
"and I wouldn't marry me either. a pathological people pleaser, who only wanted you to see her."
And there we go. The knife in the heart of this song. She wanted to marry him but he never did. In fact, it's worse than that. He never even saw her. After all this time, he still doesn't know her, understand her, or see when she's dying. That's the main message in this song. It reminds me of the line "you say, 'what a mind' this happens all the time" from Sweet Nothing. It used to be a cute lyric, but now I'm wondering if there's a double meaning to it. After all this time, he still doesn't understand her mind... and it happens all the time.
"Do something, babe, say something. Lose something, babe, risk something. Choose something, babe, I got nothing to believe, unless you're choosing me."
This is the part of the song where she lays out her plea. She asks him to help her fight, to do something to show that he wants them to stay together. She asks him to fight for her like she fought for him all these years... and he doesn't.
And to sum up all these thoughts, this is probably why she's so happy now and moved on so fast. That relationship died months ago... she just didn't physically leave it until recently.
(Again, these are just my theories. please don't take my word as gospel, I am not Taylor Swift.)
