(TRIGGER WARNING: Past abu$e and verbal abu$e)
The clattering of silverware and the shuffling of feet against the tiled floor echoed in Yoongi’s ears, the very air he breathed felt heavy against his chest.
Sitting at this kitchen table always made him feel nauseous. Many long nights he sat at the table with his father sitting beside him, shouting and spitting insults in Yoongi’s ear when he desperately scribbled down answers onto his homework so the screaming would stop when it never did. His mother wasn’t much help, her disappointment clear when she shook her head and scoffed at the situation.
Nights where he was sent to bed without food because he scored a 98% instead of a perfect score. Those were always the hardest nights for him, nights that eventually led to his poor eating habits that later became something that consumed him whole. His relationship with food became something Yoongi struggled with- something he still struggles with to this very day.
How the air was always tense, how Yoongi and his older brother were forced to stare at their laps until spoken to. He once made the mistake of looking off to the side when he heard their mother enter the kitchen. His father stood from his chair and kicked Yoongi right out of his chair and onto the floor. He made no noise as he struggled to stand. He held his arms out, his father lashing his wrists with a wooden spoon he kept on hand.
Yoongi was startled out of his thoughts when he felt a hand on his shoulder, his brother shaking him softly. He let out a shaky exhale before he mustered up the courage to look at his brother, a faint smile stretched at the corner of his lips when he gave him a slight nod.
‘I’m okay,’ Yoongi mouthed to Geum-jae. It wasn’t convincing, but with a little squeeze his brother removed his hand from Yoongi’s shoulder. Geum-jae was just as nervous as him, he could see it in his eyes, but he didn’t dare open his mouth knowing he’d stutter out nothing.
A plate of food was placed in front of Yoongi. His mother looked down at him, her frown turned into a soft, almost sinister smile when she pat him on the shoulders.
“So where is this young lady? Perhaps she stood you up,” Mrs. Min giggled behind her hand, Mr. Min cackling from his seat at the head of the table. Yep, he expected that. “And why did you come to bother me on this day? Do you not know that the 13th is Park Jimin’s birthday? You know I take his birthday seriously, it’s not like you have done anything groundbreaking like him. Honestly, I wish he was my son instead of you sometimes.”
Well there goes Yoongi’s appetite. Honestly he lost his appetite when he looked down at his plate. Mrs. Min knew he was allergic to kimchi, but yet she dished his plate with more kimchi than everyone else’s plate. He had to stop himself from pushing his plate away because the mere smell of the chili was making his throat tight.
“I know, eomma. I know.” Yoongi whispered softly as he smiled softly up at Mrs. Min, her eyes unblinking before she placed Geum-Jae’s plate down on the table. She was quick to dish her husband his plate, then her own before she sat down. They said their prayers before picking up their chopsticks.
A knock at the door interrupted the family, Mrs. Min’s eyes wide as she stared at the door. All eyes fell on Yoongi when he stood from his chair, a smirk stretched across his lips. He quietly excused himself from the table before he made his way to the door. Mr. and Mrs. Min looked at one another bewildered, Geum-jae smiling down at his plate when he heard the door open.
Mrs. Min shrieked and stood abruptly, her hands covering her mouth when Yoongi walked back into the kitchen with Jimin next to him. He bowed to Yoongi’s parents, a pleased look painted on his face before both him and Yoongi took their seats.
“It’s so nice to finally meet the both of you! Yoongi hyung has told me so much about you,” Jimin gushed, his hand finding Yoongi’s awaiting hand. “I’ve heard you’re a huge fan, Mrs. Min,” he hummed, his free hand reaching for his own chopsticks. He stopped when he noticed Yoongi’s plate and frowned.
“Hyung, aren’t you allergic to kimchi? I could have swore you told me you were allergic,” Jimin huffed. He glared over at Mrs. Min when he picked away the kimchi from Yoongi’s plate and threw the remaining kimchi onto Mrs. Min’s plate. “There, we don’t need you visiting the hospital today. I’m sure your own mother knows her son is allergic to kimchi. I mean- what kind of monster feeds her own son something that could kill him?” Jimin tapped his chin with his finger, his grip on Yoongi’s hand tightening.
The room fell silent after that, Mrs. Min stammering out a bullshit excuse about how she could have possibly forgotten because it’s been so long. Jimin wasn’t falling for it though and both Mr. and Mrs. Min could see it on his face. He clicked his tongue and shook his head like a parent would when they caught their child in a lie.
“I- B-but I thought Park Jimin was dating Suga,” Mrs. Min sputtered. “I follow all your updates. I even followed Suga so I could get updates about you, Mr. Park.” That seemed to be the final piece of the puzzle. Everything finally clicked into place and Yoongi had finally won.
Jimin rolled his eyes and placed his pointer finger underneath his plate and flicked his finger upward, spilling his plate all over the white tablecloth. A gasp fell from Mrs. Min’s gaping mouth, Yoongi smiling victoriously before he stood with Jimin.
“All the shit you put me through. The shit you put Geum-jae hyung through. You are the fucking scum of the earth and I want nothing to do with you anymore. I am not your son. I will never be your son. You are not my family, you never have been. There is a special place in hell for the both of you and I can’t wait to meet you two down there,” Yoongi hissed. “You could die tomorrow and I’d celebrate your deaths with a smile on my face. I’m in love with another man, a man who loves me for the way I am because I made myself the person I am today, not you two.”
Mr. Min stood and stomped over to Yoongi, their faces inches apart. It was a stare down and Yoongi wasn’t backing away this time. He stood his ground, even when his enraged father barked homophobic slurs in his face.
“Back up,” Yoongi said lowly, his shoulders beginning to shake violently. Geum-jae was beginning to stand when Mrs. Min barked at him to sit back down. “I said back up,” Yoongi screamed, Jimin soon jumping in to shove Mr. Min away.
“Aye! I know you’re old but step the fuck back,” Jimin hissed. “I swear to god you lay a hand on Yoongi hyung and you’ll be the one in the fucking hospital this time, got it?” Jimin spat as he got into Mr. Min’s face.
The Min name, a reputation they kept for many years, tarnished in the blink of an eye. No one said a word, Jimin carefully turned Yoongi away and gently led Yoongi’s towards the door. Geum-jae was quick to stand from his seat and rush to Yoongi, his arm wrapped around his brother’s shoulder.
As Yoongi took his first step out the door he felt as if the weight of the world was lifted off his shoulders. He was finally free, the shackles that kept him trapped in the hell he couldn’t seem to run away crumbled into dust. Twenty eight years of abuse seems to melt away with every step he took.
The front door flew open behind the three, Mrs. Min stumbling out with a notepad and pen in hand. Not even sparing her children a second glance she stumbled her way up to Jimin. She held out her hands as she bowed in front of Jimin, two cars pulling in front of the Min family home to witness the encounter.
“Please Mr. Park. I’m a huge fan, may I have an autograph? I don’t know how you know my disappointment of a son but I’ve been following you since the day you first debuted, it’s the least you could do for a loyal fan,” Mrs. Min stammered, her hands shaking with what seemed excitement. She even got on her knees as if to beg him.
Jimin slowly lowered himself to eye level with Mrs. Min as he grabbed the edge of the notepad with his thumb and pointer finger, Mrs. Min immediately lighting up with joy. He then reached for the pen, being careful to not touch her in any way shape or form. Resting his elbows on his knees he smiled sweetly.
“You could drop dead right now and I’d step over your corpse if it meant I’d be with Yoongi hyung the rest of my life. You aren’t a mother, you’re just a self absorbed bitch who only thinks of herself and no one else,” Jimin nearly purred. “I’ve been in love with your son for the past five years and I will not let an old hag keep me from someone I’d literally give my life for. You are no fan of mine, you never will be with the shit you put my hyung though. You are a parasite and you thrive on the pain of the others around you. This is probably the worst fan encounter I’ve experienced in my life and I’ve had plenty. Kick rocks, cunt.”
He stood and tossed the notepad and pen onto the ground in front of Mrs. Min and stood back up, leaving Mrs. Min to knee in the dirt. Jimin turned his back to her and reached for Yoongi’s hand, guiding him away from the house for good.
Jin was the first one out of the car, Hoseok and Namjoon not far behind, Mrs. Min’s loud sobs drowned out by Jin’s approaching footsteps. Yoongi managed to stretch his arms wide before Jin crushed him in a hug, Hobi and Namjoon following suit and joining the hug.
“I’m so proud of you, Min Yoongi,” Jin whispered before he placed a gentle kiss on the crown of Yoongi’s head. That seemed to be the breaking point for him. Hot tears pooled at the corner of Yoongi’s eyes as he let out a broken wail, the tears beginning to flow over with every passing second.
It didn’t take long for Jin to pull Geum-jae in, the two brother’s quick to embrace one another so they could cry together. Jimin, Taehyung, Jeongguk, and Sangwoo stood aside, not really sure if they should join or not. Their answers were answered when they felt a hand grab at their shirt before they were hardly pulled into the hug as well.
They were free, truly free. No more screaming. No more sleepless nights. None of it. This was the beginning of a new chapter for the Min brothers, a chapter they are welcoming with open arms. They can finally move forward.
“So,” Hoseok starts when the group finally separates. “Are we still going camping?” Yoongi managed to chuckle through his tears, Jeongguk handing Holly over to him with a smile. With a soft shake of his head, Yoongi began to scratch behind Holly’s ears when he answered.
“Oh fuck yeah, let’s go get fucking hammered and not remember this entire trip.”
Jimin never liked that Suga guy, the one who hides his identity behind his phone, the one who has songs he produced at #1 on the charts. It wasn’t because he was good at what he does, it’s because he has rejected Jimin how many times, either in DM’s or on Twitter, Jimin still wasn’t a fan. Determined to get what he wants, Jimin finds himself digging deep into Suga’s life only to come out empty handed. Jimin just want to make a song with the producer who raps like a god, is that too much to ask for?
