Happy (belated) birthday to this gift from the divine!

I didn’t have time to draw an accompanying comic, but I’d like to imagine that Hashirama made Madara’s bedroom explode with wisteria as a birthday surprise :’) (That’s my excuse for baring Madara’s tits again—clearly he just woke up and is wearing his sleeping robes.) Based off of him filling a stage with flowers for Madara’s birthday in a game. My god I wish this was canon.

I chose wisteria as the flower Hashirama showers Madara with because it’s the name of a fic that got me hooked on Hashimada all those years ago; it’s long gone from fanfiction.net but I think it’s still floating around somewhere. And wisteria are so romantic and melancholy in their color and the way they droop in long tendrils that need to cling to something to grow. Yet they’re also incredibly resilient and long-lasting. All this reminds me of Madara. He’s always been a broken man; disillusionment does not sit well with him, and he’s always working towards something (and also completely in denial and delusional, but that’s a whole other can of worms).

The flower itself seems to have mostly positive meanings in Japanese flower language—good luck and longevity. (But there’s also the Wisteria Maiden, a kabuki play about unrequited love.) In the Victorian era, wisteria symbolized an overly passionate love that clings to, and eventually chokes those it takes hold of. It’s a fandom meme that Madara is obsessed with Hashirama (man really let his life’s work, the Moon’s Eye Plan, go to shit while waiting for Hashirama to fight him). I think that obsession might be a byproduct of his mental state at that point in time. In their first lifetimes though, I think while Madara and Hashirama are drawn to each other, they wouldn’t necessarily be codependent and toxic if we’re looking purely at their interactions. However, there is the fact that they’ve always been gods among men, untouchable and honestly forces of nature that exist somewhat independently from everyone else. (that’s a rant for another day). Since childhood, they were each others equals in ideals and strength, and they did become way too important in each other’s lives, given that they probably only saw each other a handful of times.

On a dubiously less sad note, in Korea, wisteria appear to symbolize devotion that transcends death, something that Madara does time and time again with the death of his loved ones, and even the end of his own life. As much as Madara seems intensely bitter about his first death at Hashirama’s hands, he longs to see him (and fight him) again. At his third and final death, he looks forward to an afterlife where they can share a drink together as lovers brothers-in-arms.

(Also, this heavily references the bg art in Demon Slayer—bless those artists for helping me understand how these flowers work.)

“How could you…get my back?”

In chapter 626, Hashirama says that Madara “kept on attacking the Leaf,” implying that they had several fights, not just one battle to the death at the Valley of the End. This begs the question—what changed for Hashirama at the end? Why did he choose to kill Madara then and not before?

It also makes the fact that he stabbed Madara from behind that much more heart-wrenching. Madara trusted Hashirama with his back even when they became enemies again, something Hashirama reinforced in their post-defection fights.

I love the idea that, as much as Madara was a ghost after his “death” at VotE, so was Hashirama. He not only went against the ideals of his youth, but betrayed Madara in every way possible. 

(Also, I totally though Madara had his hair tied up in this screenshot but maybe i was wrong? Whatever, the world needs more ponytail Madara.)

Founders Week, Day 1: Hashirama’s Birthday

Did Madara’s arm fall asleep behind Hashirama’s torso?

Is that Madara activating the Sharingan, just so he can capture this happy moment and remember it when he has no idea when he can sneak out to see Hashirama again?

Are those reds string of fate that they’re wearing? With which Madara and Hashirama think they’re being so subtle, but after one battle, Izuna and Tobirama go confront their moron brothers about their matching “belts”?

Yup.

Only thing I can’t seem to answer is what Madara got Hashirama for his birthday.

Other notes:

This is totally based on sennokami’s roleplays, where Hashirama and Madara tried to keep a relationship as adolescents, after their friendship was discovered by their fathers. Peak Romeo and Juliet vibes. They were so happy, but things were bound to go to shit after Izuna died :’)

Loved drawing big fat Ghibli tears on Hashirama, though they don’t stylistically jibe with the shading lol

Can’t believe Madara looked at his clan’s high neck shirts and literally decided to have his whole chest out pre-Konoha.

I totally gave them summer clothes by accident, fuck.
