Image 1 - COFA 1001 VIDEO My first lesson for COFA1001 was actually everyone else's second lesson. I didn't know what to expect and felt quite intimidated It was exactly what I didn't expect. Much of the first few weeks were gone in a constant haze of homework but never really understanding the concept of mark-making. This stop motion animation shows how my reactions and how I initially dealt with and tried to make sense of all the information. I have been following artists on Facebook for quite some time now, so they were automatically the first sources of inspiration in my artistic process. When I couldn't make much sense of what was going on, I tried to draw ideas from them and link it back to work and knowledge from the past and present things we were taught in class. Image 2 - MARKING MAKING PROCESS If I'm given enough time I would prefer to indulge in spontaneity and careful piecing together random bits of information to create my works. Since that wasn't the case, I followed much a linear pattern in getting my ideas together for the first mark making assessment. I extracted materials and inspiration from class, trying to integrate them into my creative process. The whole process is seen symbolically through each image in the collage. The M marks the starting point, where I was introduced to the topic and includes transposed images of initial works done in class that helped forming the stepping stones to the next image: the question mark. The question mark has images which reflect my research of the site I had choosen, including site inspection and sketches. This phase also included researching into what different marks mean and unqiue ways to represent ideas. Then came the brain, the step where I tried to collaberate experience, ideas and research into possible solutions. This step has images of process work such as exploring the different ways to represent one idea, highlighting how I was developing into higher level of "washes". Finally, the lightbulb. Everyone loves these momments. This includes images to reflect significant progressions in my ideas to a complete piece or series of works. It was an important stage where I could finally lay out cohesive ways to reflect my site in all the different ways possible.
Image 3 - MARK-MAKING WORK These images are taken directly from the final works I submitted for the mark making assessment. They are significant marks showing how my learning process and means of artistic expression have evolved and stretched. Initially before this assessment I preferred to stick to safe things related with media. This range of materials shown through these images reflect the contrast to my first image (COFA1001 VIDEO) of the stop motion animation. Where initially I stuck to my comfort zone, by this stage I had actually realized the potential of different materials to express the same ideas even more fluently in some cases. I loved how I could use the textures and physical elements of objects to convey different meanings (for example the jasmine essence sticks and white tiles) it was a true learning moment.
Image 4 - ERASURE OF NEGATIVE/POSITIVE SPACE
Erasure can result in dramatically different results and ways of seeing the same object or scene. This experiment of my own was a moment where I actually realised this. I was interested in removing variations of triangular shapes to remove and both create negative and positive spaces. While also erasing, I sometimes added elements such as in the top on with the background area completely turned black. The experiment was relatively small, although it brought to light how the eye perceives different elements of colour, space and shape. The results with each different technique broadened my understanding of the possibilities that even erasure can add a unique dimension to a work.
Image 5 - ERASURE VIDEO
Inspired by Christopher Nolan's movie 'Inception', this short clip was the result of the many class activities done on the subject of erasure. The illusionary qualities of never-ending stair case was due to the removal of a segment within the clip and a loop of the same scene again and again. This clip was an eye-opening moment in understanding relationships of cause and effect, whereas when an essential element is removed (in this case the stairs to go to the third floor) the effect becomes different from what is expected. Many times this element of disjointedness and disruption of cause and effect can lead to more intriguing works, as well as unique qualities. It was helpful in making me realise the wider consequences of erasure, pushing me to see more when considering ideas for the Pecha Kucha assignment.
Image 6 - PECHA KUCHA
Building a Pecha Kucha with a group meant being able to communicate effectively to allocate tasks and discuss ideas. Facebook became an easily accessible and convenient option as we could post of links of our research, upload photos or documents of our work and even comment on different works. The small gif provides an insight into the development of research, collaboration of main ideas and feedback processes of our group. The gif also almost gives the effect of someone scrolling down the page to view all the posts within the group page, giving an idea of the steps involved in reaching the final product. It was a very effective documentation, feedback and evaluation tool.
Image 7 - EDITING PROCESS FOR PECHA KUCHA
The Pecha Kucha brought about many challenges such as the short time limit and the need to express ideas through images. I was dealing with the effects of erasure of episodic memories on the political sphere of the world and these two images reflect the process I went through to create my slides within the presentation. Drawing on previous examples in history to make it easier for the audience to contextualise such a world, I choose to use images from history such as propaganda and photographs from world events and sites. Rather than just placing the images side by side, I attempted to create the layout and colour scheme that was consistent for each slide. This was a moment in my process where I learned to go a step beyond and pay attention to smaller details which made up the entire work rather than just focusing on the relevance of the photos. Even though I chose images that were not mine, I changed them around to suit the presentation and make them different from the original.
Image 8 - DIFFERENT INTERPRETATIONS OF CHANCE
This collage of images show various interpretations of chance in the experimental process. The top left image displays the outcome of an experiment whereby another individual was to answer specific questions which influenced the way the artwork turned out. The material used, the colour it was painted and the patterns all relied on the element of chance as the person had no clue as to what their answers to the questions would bring about. The top right hand image is a candid photo, bringing into question the chance in capturing moments at the right time and place. I had no control over the actions of the little kids, nor the weather or reflection of the water. Coincidently the speckles reflected onto the kid's backs were just caught at the perfect moment and angle of the camera. Capturing this image made me realise how life is full of chance, and how sometimes spontaneity can lead to interesting results. The bottom left hand image is symbolic of the chance in time. After researching and looking at different works, I made my own piece to reflect my ideas of chance, as I believe it is closely tied in with time. The bottom right hand image is a screenshot of a youtube video I had made. Through this image, I wanted to communicate how using large social media sites, we are prone to becoming ' accidental audiences'. Without realising it, we may view things which were not intended for us. Hyperlinks and hypermedia allow for so much inter-activity between different sites and materials on the internet that we are bound to view things which we never intended to see in the first place.
Image 9 - INITIAL REFLECTION
This video marks my initial reflective process. I have used images of past works, research, other peoples works and inspirations all in an irregular sequencing to show the process of recollecting memories in order to evaluate as a whole. It reflects the confusion and mental choas that ensued when I tried to piece together how everything connected together to emphasise the main focus of experimental processes. This image, although a separate submission (submission 9) of its' own is followed on directly with the Dart Board image that follows.
Image 10 -DARTBOARD This dart board image is symbolic of my evaluation of my experimental processes throughout the semester. Instead of an ordinary dart board, it it layered with images of feedback I had received from both students and teacher for my mark-making assessment, as well as in the finer edges, images of my tumblr pages and process diary, which have been essential tools in my creative processes, documentation and experimentation. I have included the things from the course that I believe have helped me develop and grow, all in ranks of how important they were (e.g. the assessment feedback in close to the middle). The placement of the images also highlights the varied levels I was at throughout the course, ranging from outer to inner circles, although never reaching the bullseye, which has purposefully been left black. The lines are intentionally left un-joined as to show how even the evaluation process was not a refined procedure which had exact and accurate solutions or results. Through all the feedback and personal evaluation, I believe I needed more time and energy put into going through the experimental process more thoroughly.
