The boys are at it again!
@zenigatakeibu found some trouble...
The concrete hadn't been wet until his collision with it. This was the second time this week he'd scraped the pavement with his own skin, but it was the first time he'd tasted it as well, and tobacco ash. That was new, and no less filthy. His body decided he was going to choke on it until he coughed viciously.
He was struggling to see the blood and not get a fresh coating on his face. The suit was ruined if he didn't get it to a cleaners in the next day or so. 'Butcher friend being careless,' that was the next excuse he could pull without being stared at for too long.Which, at the moment, he was practically kissing eyelashes with the inspector, gloating so close to his face. If he weren't such a bastard to deal with, maybe he'd enjoy laughing along in spite of himself. Standing on his own was the only dignity he could muster, though he imagined the next movement of his wrist would be caught in a cuff.
"You-!"
Nope. Not ready yet to make that sentence. He spits on the ground in hopes of marking that boot beneath him with a good spray. His hand snatches that lapel closest to him, quick as he would've gone for his pistol.
"I'll give you a sample-!" Hard headed qualities had to give him a boost somewhere; he aims to put that to the test between Zenigata's eyes. If the cop's nose broke, so much the better.
what are you, in a hardboiled detective novel? -for Jigen!
" I'm just saying. " His hand was raised, pinning another piece of yarn to corkboard.
Brevity was a luxury not afforded in those tales. The details, that was where the meat was, where you got hooked into whys and whodunnits. The mystery. That was the fun in those dark, smoky alleys described in gray morals and backstabbing women. No one had one motivation, no one was completely loyal, not forever, not if they weren't an idiot. The world was seen for what it was, a cold little wheel where the slimy sons of bitches were on top, and everyone else in the city were on the streets to keep it running.
You either ran the rat race, or got crushed under everyone else's feet.
Except,
He had been reading one or two of those books on the longer flights where he couldn't sleep. Someone had left it behind on their chair and it had slipped into his belongings on a connection flight to Venice. It would be hours across international waters with nothing else to do. Problems of being a cheapskate when the take was minimal or his luck at a casino had reached a new low.
Currently, he was tracking the routes of the money trucks that delivered to one to get revenge. Monaco was rich enough for the picking, and he was feeling petty against that sneering dealer who'd waved while he was being dragged away.
" Visually speaking, it makes sense to use string. Unless, you've been holding out on me about boating skills you have for a better escape route."
"... People on dating apps are crazy."

youre either having a cigarette with me or you're having a cigarette against me
" How long-?" His silence assumes a moment to count, gently his fingers wag , staring at them for several seconds. Lupin wouldn't have let it go so silent if it were the three of them. " A minute after he got his blood on my suit when he died. "Jigen puffs on that thought, inhaling deep and slow.
Face to face with his cold, sagging corpse. He never expected to see his friend as stiff as the ground beneath him, not when he'd been two steps behind him. This was just the end of a job gone sour, and that solitary bastard had gone and gotten shot while racing for cover. Jigen's box of cigarettes in his breast pocket was soaked through when he tried to drag the body away. No more cheap ones, after that.
"Longest I ever did something to make a guy happy." Consistently.
" And after all that.... still died. So, New years resolutions are still shit to me." Time to drain his champagne flute down his throat.
Fujiko watches him quietly for a moment, her usual demeanor tempered by something softer that almost approached respect. almost. She tilts her glass to her lips, savoring the wine, though her eyes never left him.
"Some people," she began, now swirling her wine absently as her tone softens with her signature sharpness, "Just aren't meant to be saved, no matter what you do. You can try to keep them breathing, and smiling..." she shrugs, "But they'll find a way to prove otherwise."
she sets the glass down gently, fingers resting along the stem, "Doesn't mean you didn't do what you could, Jigen. Or that it wasn't worth something." she pauses, letting the sentiment sit a moment. "Even if New Year's resolutions are a load of crap, maybe keeping your word isn't." she'll give him that. "Not that I think you'd go soft over a promise now..." maybe that ol mule's heart isn't as cold as he lets on...
// @youandme-and
He would have gurgled the entire draught of champagne out if he had protest to give. 'Soft?!' He would have sputtered out, wounded without injury.
But his mood was keeping like the canned olives in the party-goers glasses. With a little truth stuck through the middle, it was all going down smoothly. Another firework explodes across the night sky, sparkles and glitter fading in seconds. It was warm here, there wasn't the cold sting of death on such a bright, beautiful night.
Tch. Beautiful. So romantic, with a little bit to drink.
"It's my best quality. The world's better for not makin' me into an insurance agent." Nothing was better assurance than cash in hand, after all. Jigen lets that air hold as more fireworks beat the air, and his eardrums.
" Alright. Your turn. Longest relationship you bothered with.
"Don't even have to talk feelings with me. Who was it ? "
you came back. -for Jigen!
" For me. For my own damn self." He snarled at the countless keys jangling in his hands, jabbing each into the lock with artless impatience.
A man could be heartless. He could appoint himself as the one who would be condemned for being heartless. That was factual, it had been factual for as long as he was a killer, running guns for the highest bidder.
But this wasn't a heroic situation. Escaping himself out of prison was enough of a hassle, but leaving someone in a building that was flooding from the bottom, up, was lower than he dared. Poor infrastructure had created a perfect storm of crumbling concrete, a cheap prison complex built on the backs of inmates before them. If the government had any control over the weather, it would have been a state-sanctioned insurance fraud, with a side of some damp, cowardly orderlies and a slew of dead criminals.
He wouldn't wish that death on a stranger, even a scoundrel like him.
Finally, a key turned the lock in just the right way, swinging the door open as the water was slipping past his calves. Jigen grabs the nearest shoulder to shove the thief aside, tears down a poster, and yanks a gold pocket watch from the crevice in the wall, jamming that into his pocket.
" Don't wait for me to teach you how to swim. You're gonna be choking on your surprise if you wait too long to find the roof."
Okay been watching lupin a bit…
@bushiblossom started talking deep.
A few times, there was quiet when their paths crossed outside of the entire group working together. Though, it was odd to think of their assortment of criminals could be called a solid grouping. They hadn't always been banded together for the sake of one goal. Diverging paths and reasonings, sometimes the road was lonely on purpose. Though other times, they didn't find success until that lightning-strike moment, a powerhouse of thievery as a crew.
Right now, the powerhouse was divided three ways, the caustic couple splitting to opposite sides of Europe, and Jigen by chance, meeting Goemon in Turkey. The baths were crowned to be the height of luxury, and surrounded by the thick scent of bergamot, patchouli oil and smoke, his overloaded senses agreed. It had been some time before had he the urge to be so thoughtful, ruminating over the impossibilities of life together.
" If you mean poker, " The thin mouthpiece pulls from his lips, exhaling heavily. "That's simple enough to teach. I've been wantin' to win back some of that money you owe me." From an indeterminate time ago, Maybe a late night favor run or perhaps some some lent money to get out of a jam.
Maybe Goemon hadn't owed him anything in the first place.
It would be no worse if the samurai's luck was impeccable as always, and he lost it all because of a lie. That would still be worth seeing, and cursing the shinto deities that probably existed. What else gave someone who was so stuck in the past the best situations to pay back karmic debt?
"If we hit the casino..." The next smoky exhale seals his lids shut for several moments, his chest rising, and holding there. Tight, but not choking, hazy and ebbing out through the creases of his smile.
"Something's different... Goemon. Hey. You're not suffering from the heat here, right? "
Jigen Daisuke
stop fussing with it. you'll make it worse. -for Jigen!
There were aches, pains, and then there was the distinct thinness of metal in his side, three points coming together, and creating a vicious little hole. Some bastard had made the edges serrated, Which had an awful little fishhook effect when tugged on. This was the problem with running; there was always the chance that someone was going to get that last shot in. He would have dragged himself across this last river on his own if the adrenaline hadn't cut and run with the last of his breath.
No more shouting from the horizon behind. Their pursuers had given up, and yet the safest place to sleep was still miles away. Night-time meant those dirty little insects were crawling around, making everything beneath his sleeves itch and his patience grind to nothing. Were the rings in his pockets even worth selling?
Jigen's hand hangs over the fiberglass shaft, flicking the air near it . Any reasonable flinch earns his tawdry grin, dropping his wrist to the grassy ground.
"Well-? You damn well better help then. Or build us a tent; dying of exposure isn't on the to-do." The gunman's head rests on the rough bark of the pine behind him, groaning deep in his throat. The brim of his hat slips as far as the slope of his nose, and he lets it rest there over his eyes.
