Me and the lovely human @meisnerd were talking about the connotations of Robby being abandoned by his mother from a Jewish perspective and I'm so gutted.

Judaism is matrilineal, our entire foundation is built upon l'dor v'dor from generation to generation.

Robby, certainly in an egalitarian reform congregation, has his mother's name as part of his Hebrew name. He is a Jew, because he is his mother's son.

She left him and yet, he can never leave her.

Beyond that, the Sh'ma, the prayer that Robby recites in his darkest moment in Season 1, is quite literally the first prayer we ever learn. It is the backbone of everything. Robby very likely heard the Sh'ma as a lullaby.

Robby has also made it abundantly clear that he no longer believes in God and struggles in that belief.

In saying the Sh'ma - how much of him was actually crying out for his mother?

I applaud the writers for getting SI so accurate. It isn't one decision, it is a battle.

The desire not necessarily to be gone but just for the pain to stop, and not knowing how other than to leave. That push-pull of committing to something that can't be undone. Hinting that you need help but not fully admitting to the problem, because you still haven't decided if you want to be stopped. Being simultaneously frustrated and relieved when something interrupts the noise. Both annoyed and grateful when you find a reason to stay just a little bit longer. Because this decision isn't something you make in an instant, it is a long walk across a tightrope, and you're still not entirely sure what side you'll land on.

We are seeing Robby tiptoeing along the precipice of his own life.

Gee I wonder if there’s a parallel between Dr Mohan being uncharacteristically rude and dismissive to her coworkers and patients as she was ramping up into her panic attack and Dr Robby being downright mean as he edges closer to his possible actual suicide. It’s almost like Dr Mohan had visible symptoms that she could express and receive immediate help for, and maybe he might feel some sort of way about that on a subconscious level.

It’s almost like Dana’s conversation with Langdon about his sobriety depending on his support network had a subtextual meaning for the person shown to be listening in on it.

Okay so- it has come to my attention that many people were shocked that hardly any of the pittlings knew what a fax machine was until grandpa Abbot pointed it out. I’m 30 and have never seen one or used one but I’m aware of what they are. I just couldn’t tell you how they work.
