That feeling that shot through her– it was unsettling. It certainly had awakened something in her that felt one time dormant. What exactly? The blonde had no clue but there was something brewing just beneath the surface. A strange familiarity hung just beyond the balance; however, that had to be all in her head. She had only just met the petulant girl. They’d known one another no more than forty-eight hours. Doing what she did best, she swept the feeling under the rug in hopes to focus on making amends. It was the least she could do after offending her so significantly. In all fairness, she had done her one good deed. She saved her life– that should be enough. But it wasn’t, not to her or to the other. Wearing a wry smile, Clarke shrugged her shoulders. Frankly, she didn’t know how to talk to Alicia. She wasn’t that much older than her by any stretch, but that didn’t mean she had any inkling as to how to relate to her. High school had been far in her rearview mirror for some time. Although, now that was completely irrelevant. “Hey, it wasn’t that bad.” There was a soft almost forced chuckle enveloping her words. Despite the instability between them, this was the most at peace she’d been in days. Perhaps even longer. “Yeah, well you’d do the same right?” She didn’t actually believe that, but she had this thing where she just assumed people were inherently good. Clarke debated with herself. It was a simple question. A yes or no would suffice. The latter was what was calling out to her. However, she went against her better judgment and went with the truth. After all, she was trying to regain some sort of trust between them– not that there had necessarily been any there in the first place. Sure, she’d assisted a dangling Alicia from the elevator shaft but that didn’t mean a whole lot. “Used to…” Sighing, her fingers sifted through the sand as her gaze stayed on the water. “When my dad was alive we’d head down to Virginia Beach for the weekends. My mom, she was always on call so it was just us but haven’t in years. Uh, you? I mean…” Bright blues shifted back to the brunette at her side. “Do you… want to?”
“You mean help someone in their time of need, rescue them from hungry infected who are eager to stake claim and enjoy their lunch time of said person--yes, I believe so.” she scoffed a little, as if the option was really up for debate. If the roles had been reversed, Alicia wouldn’t have hesitated to help Clarke. It didn’t matter if you knew someone. In this world they were living in, anyone in need deserved to be helped. Or at least try to. Some situations just couldn’t be prevented, like Ofelia leaving. No matter what she said, the other would have left regardless. Alicia could only hope the other was alright. Alive and well. Sadly there was nothing they could do, for it would be a big risk trying to follow someone who wouldn’t want to be found. Staying at the hotel, was their only option of survival right now. She listened intently, feeling something inside her steer. Despite the rather harsh treatment from earlier, she felt the pain Clarke carried with her. Recognizing it from her own experience. “Your dad.. he passed long before all this?” she asked, but would understand if the other didn’t wish to answer. Clearly it was still difficult, as it was for her. She wondered how much different her life would be if her dad was still alive. Would they have done better by terms of survival. Worse. Would Nick constantly relapse? Turn his back to his family? Maybe, their relationship never had been good. But she knew Nick still missed him, even if he never spoke of their father. Would her mother be more considerate towards her? Acknowledge she has a daughter, not just a son. It wouldn’t do well to dwell on what ifs. It never was to happen. This, was all she had. “I lost my dad too.. car crash, awhile ago. For so long I was angry, for the late shifts. Blaming his boss for working him so hard..but it was a lie. He uh.. committed suicide. Left a note. He just couldn’t cope. Now I don’t know if I should feel saddened for him choosing that option.. if I somehow should have done more. Or angry.. for just leaving us.. me.. or angry at my mother, for not helping him.” she sighed, rubbing her neck as if the tension of their family past could be eased away. “You mean go for a swim?” she asked to be clarified. Taking a second to think, she nodded. “Sure.”

Clarke averted her gaze. It went without saying that she felt bad. Pushing Alicia away might have been the best thing for everyone. Truly in fact, but she didn’t deserve it. Not to mention, if she was honest with herself, her chance of survival wasn’t great regardless of whether she was on her own or not. “I’m sorry…” The words felt like something she said often which was odd because she couldn’t remember when she’d used them. She kept those words close to the chest and yet, she’d now said them more to Alicia than anyone in a long time. “We are,” she hummed victoriously, feeling a bit better. Taking hold of Alicia’s hand, her celebration was short-lived. A lump formed in her throat. Blue focused on the expected contact. It’s what she’d wanted after all– something to prove to be a good show of faith. Except now she felt like her skin was on fire. It wasn’t, no more than usual. The sun would inevitably have its way with her– pale turning to red. But right now, the only thing doing anything to her skin was Alicia’s. Goosebumps raised with a fury that only awakened with her. “Shit…” Clearing her throat, she abruptly broke the contact. Instinct was telling her to run so far that her feet bled while contradicting itself by wanting her near. There was something so comforting about the most minute of touches from the younger girl. “Sorry, I just–” she tried, figuring that this was exactly why she’d apologized. She was trying to befriend her– not alienate her. Acting weird like this wasn’t going to help her case any. Dusting some of the sand off her knees, she approached things differently– more lightly. Anything to not give Alicia further whiplash. “I just don’t like being on my knees for too long.” Her inelegance was coupled with a sharp smile. Rolling with it, she moved to get closer to Alicia to seem unfazed. “Don’t you think it’s a little weird? Your last name, my first? It’s like it was meant to be,” she chuckled wholeheartedly, her head lolling back.
The apology fell twice with very little period of time in between, much more than she likely had heard from her own mother. A woman supposedly loving her unconditionally and placing her as priority. Instead, a flimsy excuse often had come in manner to smooth things over. Not that she ever forgot. Despite the many occurrences, she remembered. Why Clarke formed one a second time, was mildly lost to her, but she kept from commenting. It was clear the blonde had an inner battle she fought. The reason of, was unknown unless she was let in. With their very fragile path towards friendship, it was unlikely a confession would be forthcoming. In this moment, Alicia wasn’t sure if she wanted to participate in figuring things out. She was meeting her halfway, but trust needed to be build. Being cast aside rather rudely, it would be unfair to her to suddenly get involved in helping the other woman out with her struggles. Not when Clarke had more or less refused to even accept her. In time she might, dependable on how well they would get along in the long run. If the blonde was going to stay, or turn her back and run as fast as she could. “Okay.” she replied, hint of confusion her tone at the explanation of why the other was shifting her position. It was relate-able, for the sand was rough in texture. Sitting on as your body pressed hard due to gravity, it would make someone uncomfortable after a short period of time. Alicia loved the beach, but it could be hurtful. “Really? That is what you’re going with?” she asked, considering they knew their names matched when they first met. It was funny, but prior it had not been a way to break the ice. Then again, they had been hunted more or less by hungry infected wanting their flesh. Not a time to really sit down and have a chat, point out the similarities in their name. Sucking in a breath she once again played along. “Maybe it was..if anything I probably wouldn’t be alive right now.” she remarked, knowing she likely had met her end if not for Clarke saving her from the awkward position as she dangled from the wires that held the cart of the elevator. Perhaps it was meant to be. “So...you..like to swim?” she asked in an attempt that was not as cheesy but kept the conversation going.
I think I’ve met you before written by kittymannequin ↳You remember some things, but most of all, you remember her. Sometimes you wish you couldn’t, but the colour of her eyes is burned so much into your brain that if you try to blink it away, it makes you dizzy. So you let the thoughts of her consume you, until there’s nothing but blinding light in your mind and then it’s all over, for a little while. And then you hear a familiar voice.

Clarke wasn’t sure if and when they’d have another opportunity like this. Her pale skin heated more than usual from the sun. Later, she’d ache but for the time being she didn’t mind so much. It was just nice to have this moment of relief. Worries of tomorrow merely lingered in the background. She wasn’t terrified for a brief period– not in the traditional sense. Her life wasn’t in imminent danger nor the much younger girl’s either. If she had to guess, she was no more than 16 or 17. Hell, she wasn’t even old enough to buy her own drinks in the states; however, that no longer mattered. Although, it was then that she realized how little she knew of the girl. With all the other worries echoing in her mind, the most prominent was letting the teenager get too close. At any time, she could become infected but this scared her more. In spite of herself, a slight chuckle reverberated. She was an asshole. That wasn’t lost on her– a new development, but the end of the world certainly put things in perspective and changed a person. “I do what I can.” Moving her hands from her face, she removed her shades and tucked them into the front of her top. Suddenly, Clarke felt vulnerable as those haunting greens looked at her. Sure, they were fueled with irritation, but they also carried the ghosts of those she’d either killed or seen die. “Alicia…,” she sighed, knowing she deserved that. All of it. “I’m sorry, alright? I’m trying here…” Messily bringing herself to her knees, she completely lacked any finesse as she essentially bowed to the brunette. The effect was lost somewhere in the balance as Alicia was sitting. Still, Clarke was really making an effort. “Can we like start over here?” Extending her hand, she was hopeful that she’d agree. “Clarke Griffin.”
Her jaw shifted in reaction to the apology, a concept that was alien to her. The few words of regret she received were always contradicted by a followed action. How was she to believe they were sincere, when people kept pushing her away. The people who had always been there for her in time of need, had passed a tragic death. Trust was becoming an issue, for whenever she let a person in, happiness seemed short. “An unusual attempt to make friends. Normally they try to be close, get to know another --- not be told to shut up. Interesting.” she was hurt and Clarke was allowed to know that her words had deeper effect on her. Alicia struggled to understand why the other girl was even bothering. She did as requested, now apparently she wanted a fresh start. “Why?” why should she believe a word she said? Lifting her hand, her gaze fell to watch the sand slip through her fingers, leaving few behind that were stuck to her palm --- warmed from the sun. An inner battle of debate was deciding on whether or not to accept her apology, move on and start anew. If Clarke truly didn’t want her around, then why was she near begging for amends to be made. The action of the other literally bowing down to her, wasn’t lost on her. It sparked an odd feeling she had difficult time in placing. It was the hopefulness in her eyes that tied the knot. She knew that look. It was all too familiar when she caught herself in the mirror. How many times hadn’t she stood in front of her mother? Wishing to be seen. With a sigh she brushed her hands, ridding herself of the dust left behind before extending her own arm to grasp her hand in hers. “..are we really reintroducing ourselves?” with a faint roll of her eyes, twitch to her lips she stated her own name. “Alicia Clark.”
I’m sorry. If it makes you feel any better, I almost died after that. It doesn’t.
Sweaty Alicia Clark
