It was the sixth victim. The sixth in a chain of abductions over the last few weeks and each time, they were three steps behind. Each time the girls turned up dead and mutilated before anyone on their team had a moment to know their names. Jacqueline knew their names. She’d been saying them for days, over and over in her head, trying to sort through it, pouring over the files. And now there was a sixth. This time they were faster. This time they found out just a few hours after her disappearance, from a parking garage. They had footage on tape. Early proof. He was meticulous but getting sloppy. And even still, eight hours had passed and little movement had been made. They didn’t have enough leads or enough evidence or enough clearance. They couldn’t get this warrant or that one. It was infuriating. She’d studied him enough to know and they’d had enough bodies by now to know how fast this guy moved. Thirty six hours, tops. Maybe less. That was all they had before her body would inevitably turn up, beaten, bloody, degraded, beyond any kind of recognition when they would inevitably ask the family to ID it. Jac knew the FBI dealt with hard cases but this was the first hard case so far that didn’t seem to have any results. At least not any that weren’t more bodies.
“I pulled some shots from the photos we took at John Dyer’s house. There are a few family photos in the background at a lake. It looks like a house. I know it isn’t much to go on but I dug around and his grandfather’s records suggest he may have owned a house upstate. That could be where he’s taking them. It’s .. close enough to where all of the bodies have turned up. The director wants us to wait until morning to get a warrant. He doesn’t .. think it’s enough of a lead and he said we’re wasting resources to send agents all the way there on nothing. But it’s not nothing. It’s more than we had two hours ago. It’s more than we had the last time he tortured a college student. A lot can happen in twelve more hours. Please talk to him, Jessie.”
