For years, physicians have assumed they can treat both genders the same way. But it's costing women their lives.

“In 1977, the FDA recommended excluding female subjects of childbearing age from participating in clinical research (the idea was that researchers risked damaging a fetus if a woman became pregnant during a study). Female mice were also largely excluded because of the misconception that menstrual cycles rendered them too variable to study.”

Lacey is glad she went with the amputation, but that didn’t make things easy. She still struggles with nerve pain. She jokes about her sasquatch foot, but it bothered her. And while a big ugly rubber foot might seem like a trivial thing, it’s indicative of a bigger issue: Prosthetic devices have long been created by men, for men.

When a woman puts on a foot or a knee or an arm, she often finds that it’s not quite right. Knees are too tall and too stiff, feet don’t fit into shoes, hands are big, ankles don’t bend to accommodate heels. Every step a female amputee takes puts them face to face with the fact that prosthetics is still a male dominated industry.

It may appear like a small typo, but the pronoun “his” subtly shouts disregard for women makers, particularly to those that have been mistreated because of their gender. Going forward we’ll be even more careful in how we communicate and hopefully this is a reminder to others of how important it is to be thoughtful and empathetic when crafting copy.

Until shockingly recently — in fact, until this millennium — there was minimal research on women’s heart attacks because of widespread belief in the medical community that women did not have heart attacks. Female characters remained dramatically under-represented as protagonists, major characters, and speaking (major and minor) characters in the top grossing films of 2013.

Females comprised 15% of protagonists, 29% of major characters, and 30% of all speaking characters.

Only 13% of the top 100 films featured equal numbers of major female and male characters, or more major female characters than male characters.

Along with air-conditioning, globalization has also helped popularize something called Ashrae 55: a building code created by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, to determine the ideal temperature for large buildings. The standard, which has set thermostats across the globe, is hardly culture-free. According to a study in-press in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, out of nearly 2,000 animal studies published in 2009, there was a bias toward the use of male animals in eight of 10 disciplines. Neuroscientists used 5.5 males for every one female, pharmacologists used five, and physiologists used 3.7. And despite the fact that women are twice as likely to suffer from major depression, fewer than 45 percent of animal studies on these disorders used females.

And although more women than men die from heart disease each year, a 2008 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology reported that women comprised only 10 percent to 47 percent of each subject pool in 19 heart-related trials.

Seat designers often make the assumption that nearly everyone will be accommodated if they design a seat for a man in the 95th percentile of measurements, meaning that they are larger than all but 5 percent of other men — and, theoretically, all women.

In terms of hip width, women are bigger than men. In the study, North American women in the 95th percentile had hip breadth measurements of 19.72 inches, compared to 17.15 inches for North American men.

According to SeatGuru.com, which collects data on seat sizes from dozens of airlines, the typical economy class airline seat ranges from 17 to 18 inches across. This means that seats will be snug on many bodies; for about 1 in 4 women, the seat will be too small at the hips, causing them to spill over into the adjacent seat.

Online sources suggest that the average adult man’s hand is about 2 cm larger than a woman’s—three quarters of an inch. That is not a small difference for using a hand-held device.

A 2011 study by the University of Virginia’s Center for Applied Biomechanics found that seat-belted female drivers in actual crashes had a 47 percent higher chance of serious injuries than belted male drivers in comparable collisions. For moderate injuries, that difference rose to 71 percent.

The female dummy is not put in the driver’s seat on the frontal crash test, he said, because men drive more and die in greater numbers than female drivers.

The device, powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and worn on the outside, is about three times heavier than a human heart, which will limit its compatibility to 86 percent of men and 20 percent of women.
