“Well, they seem infrequent enough and at a two, that doesn’t seem cause for concern,” Lovell said with a shrug. “There are medicines that can fix it right up, so we’ll start you on a course of that and we’ll see how you are in a few weeks.”

The way the slave leaned back was not surprising either. Lovell was a vampire after all and also a master in the castle and that did not stop the way he gave Xander a once over. “Not scared of me, are you?” 

“You wouldn’t have anything that helps sleep, would you?” He asked with a chuckle though it wasn’t a happy one. He knew his situation and he had no right to ask for sleep but dammit he was exhausted. “I’m not sure how much longer I can go without a full rest.” He admitted, and something he also assumed was the cause of headaches. His question caused him to raise his eyebrow before he squinted his eyes lightly. “...Should I be?” He asked him, cautious but not yet defensive.

Rage at his own inability to explain himself almost made him scream at Xander, but he bit down on his lip and kept his mouth closed for the few moments he needed to cool down enough to speak. “It was…it was like everything since we saw one another again here had never happened. I don’t know why. Everything, I remember it all now, but I don’t know if this is a dream or if that was or what is real. What do you remember?” Maybe if he could find something solid to hold onto, then he would know what time period was actually real. “Just stay with me. Please.” 

“I remembered everything, Iah. Nothing was taken from me except you.” He said before he shook his head and leaned against the door frame. Iah’s request wasn’t unreasonable and truthfully, he also wanted to be there. “I’m not going anywhere. Unless you kick me out.” He shrugged but looked down because that was definitely a possibility. “I dunno, Iah. This castle is just fucked up. I feel as if the longer we’re here, the longer it’ll fuck us up. Do you realize I’m starting to enjoy rough sex?” He sighed and looked away, almost embarrassed.

Caught off guard, Xander’s eyes grew wide as he stepped back from the pressure of Emerson’s body against his own. His arm wrapped around the fairy’s waist to keep them steady until he realized what the other was doing. His lips opened and a gasp formed before he moved his head to the side to give him room. He didn’t mind the marking, didn’t mind that Emerson wanted to be possessive, in fact he desired it. His hand around his waist pulled him even closer before he turned them around and forced him against the wall regardless his teeth were still upon his neck. Xander’s other hand moved to the back of Emerson’s neck where he pulled at his locks enough to pull him off. “If I would’ve known this was what you wanted, I would’ve come by sooner.” Xander teased before he, in turn, marked Emerson’s neck.

“What are you talking about?” Manny asked, furrowing his brows together in confusion as his gaze flickered over the other shifter’s features. “I don’t need you to do that.” He was more than capable of handling that himself, perhaps even more so now that he’d been brought back from death as a demon. “I like you as you are, Xander. Has something happened?” 

Xander had to chuckle, his drunken self unable to be shaken and he hated it. It seemed being this way was hard to control himself and his mouth to allow the words free. He would never make his friend worry this way and yet, there he was, a weak individual that assumed instead of clarified. “I was captured and brought here.” Xander chuckled with hurt upon his face. “Though meeting you was a highlight, there’s not many of them.” Truthfully, Xander missed being free, truly free. But then again, what slave didn’t?

Abel took a moment to look the stranger over. Clearly one who was actually making an effort in the gym, instead of the many he’d seen try work out, but fail to make it count. And he noted the collar around his neck. “Has no one ever taught you it’s rude to stare, kid? You’re a handsome one. Would be a shame if you pissed off the wrong person and got yourself hurt.”

“If they did, I didn’t catch on it seems.” He retorted with a soft shrug with a hint of a playfulness to his tone but he otherwise remained straight faces as he leaned down to set his weight down. “I appreciate the compliment and the warning, I think?” He asked him but as he stood, he faced the stranger in return. “Truly, I meant no offense. I was simply lost in thought.”

“Hmm… How bad is the vertigo on a scale of one to ten?” Lovell asked as he leaned closer to look into the slave’s eyes. “And how often do you get them in a day? Or in a week?” It was good that the slave was admitting to it because a lot of them tended to keep things to themselves until it got too late and forced Lovell to work overtime to fix them. It was annoying. “Could be after effects of the spell or it could be completely unrelated to magic.”

“Not too often. If we’re taking it by weeks maybe once every five or six days. Usually it’s coupled by not being able to sleep the night before.” He admitted, again why he almost didn’t say anything for he chalked it up to not sleeping well. But at the same time, there have been many times he hadn’t slept well and wasn’t effected this way. “As far as a scale goes, I’d go as low as a two. It never lasts long. It’s more annoying than anything.” Why not admit it all? He was already here. He did find himself pulling away when the doc leaned in closer but it was more a reflex than anything else.

“Why do you say that?” Manny asked, pushing open the door to Kris’ suite and guiding his fellow shifter inside. The door shut behind them and the younger slave tugged Xander over towards the living room couch for them to sit, looking at him with furrowed brows. “What do you mean?” 

Guided inside, he moved with the feminine figure to the couch where he sat and leaned forward. His hair fell along his eyes and he traced whatever patterns were available to him on the floor. The questions... He heard them but wasn’t sure, really, how to answer them. “What do I mean?” He questioned his friend, blue eyes soft on their features. “You want a strong friend, right?” Xander asked him, his smile tired. “Someone who sticks up for you, cares about you, wants you?” Xander questioned before he turned his eyes away and moved back to the floor. “You deserve a friend like that. Shouldn’t I be that?”

“This is a regular check up. I just need to take some of your blood,” Lovell said and gestured to the chair that was next to his desk. “Xander Goyang. Shapeshifter,” he recited from the slave’s file that sat open in front of him before he turned his eyes on the other man. He looked healthy enough at first glance. “Are you feeling anything out of the ordinary with your body?” the varcolac asked, an eyebrow quirking at the other man.

Easily enough, he moved to sit where he was gestured. For some reason he could hear Emerson’s voice in his head when he had explained the doctor to him. Xander’s blue eyes lifted to watch the good doctor before he set up his arm on the desk and began to roll up his sleeves. It was his assumption blood would be taken from his arm. “With my body?” He repeated the question before he gave a soft scoff and looked down. “Truthfully, ever since the trick of spring, I may have after effects of the drunken state I was in. Mostly I get vertigo occasionally.” He admitted. He hadn’t told anyone for he didn’t want others to worry. Xander simply tossed the idea away, that it would just go away on it’s own. If he was even more honest, he wasn’t sure why he admitted it to the doctor.

What’s wrong? He had no idea where to begin. His mind was spinning and it felt as though he was having trouble just keeping hold of reality. “I…” he began, then faltered for a few seconds. “I went back in time and forgot everything we were. It was like my leaving you was a raw wound and now I have no idea what I’m thinking or how much of what I remember is real.”

“You forgot me?” He asked, not sure how to take in that knowledge. “I don’t understand, Iah...” He admitted, his hand moved to brush a strand of hair from his face. “You remember me now, right? What is it you’re struggling to understand? What isn’t real to you?” Truthfully, this was confusing but Iah wasn’t the only one to be affected by the spell that captivated the castle. He had as well but he didn’t forget. “What can I do?” He finally resolved in asking, hoping that would help him in some capacity.

Despite the long trip from Sweden to the castle on the mountain, not even jetlag or exhaustion from the previous day was going to stop Abel from training. From that fateful day he’d been turned, he’d been a soldier. And not even a councilman position was going to shake that from his bones.

He found himself in the castle’s gym, amongst both slaves and other master’s, shirtless and hitting away at a punching bag with naked fists. Panting from the attempts to push his body futher and futher. Only when he paused to take a drink of water, did he notice a man looking at him. Perhaps he’d even been watching Abel, the councilman didn’t know how long he’d been there. “Excuse me, can I help you? I’m not sure I like being watched like that.”

Honestly, Xander didn’t realize he’d been watching until he was pulled from his thoughts. Sweat poured on his own skin as he’d worked out a bit too hard previously. He sat on the bench with a weight in his hand and simply got lost in thoughts. His earphones also consumed his thoughts, a song playing that he couldn’t honestly admit he knew. Though he hadn’t heard what was said, he saw the look in the stranger’s eyes and averted his own quickly. “I’m sorry, what?” He asked, taking out one of his earbuds before he braved looking back up at the vampire.

Iah’s eyes went wide at Xander’s words. What?! How could he think that was what he meant?! Reaching out again, he tried to grab Xander’s arm. “No!” he gasped. “That’s not what I meant!” He wanted Xander; he wanted Xander so much he couldn’t describe it, but to be thrown back into a mindset he had only recently lost was making him confused. 

It was strange. As soon as he felt Iah’s hand on his arm, immediately Xander calmed down. He lifted his eyes again and pushed his selfishness aside. He moved closer to Iah and lifted his hand to run a hand through the other’s hair. It was as if he was trying to also calm him. “Tell me, Iah. Tell me straight. What’s wrong?”

Being back there, without everything they had built here, had been too much and his anger was fresh again, but yet somehow buried once more. His mind felt as though it was being broken in half by something he couldn’t control. “I don’t know what we are,” he replied, completely honest. “I don’t know where we stand anymore.”

“Where we stand?” He asked as a confused look spilled harshly across his face. It was then he felt fear rise inside of him and he wasn’t sure how to take it. “Are you saying... Are you saying you don’t want me anymore?” The hand that held onto Iah’s pulled away as he began to also back from him. Conclusions and assumptions swirled in his head and he felt his entire world start to spin out of control.

He stepped closer to Xander, holding his hand out to him. What he really wanted was to pull him in for a hug, but with what had happened while back in time, he wasn’t really sure if he should. “Can you tell me what you’re thinking?”

Xander reached and took his hand, his thumb brushing the top of his hand as he did so. He could read Iah’s hesitation but pushed it aside. Instead he moved to lay his head on their bound hands. “I don’t know what to think. A lot has happened but I don’t recall everything. Can you tell me what’s happened? Why you’re hesitant to even touch me?”

“You’re awfully affectionate today,” Manny noted, patting the other shifter’s arm as he accepted the embrace. Something was definitely off with Xander and he had no doubt it had to do with one of the mischievous spells floating around. “Yeah, c’mon, Xander, we can go lay down in my suite,” he offered, looping an arm around the other slave’s waist to guide him down the hall, “You feeling all right?” 

A smile mixed with a snorted laugh as Xander shook his head. “I’m always affectionate.” He mumbled, eyes opening again to look up at Manny. “To those who want me to be at least. Not everyone does.” He pouted but leaned on Manny as he was led to his suite. He chuckled again before he lifted his hand and pushed a strand of hair from Manny’s face. The question, even through his stupor, caught him off guard, “I always have to feel okay.”

“Not necessarily...” Honestly he wasn’t trying to beat around the bush or anything, just that, well he wasn’t entirely sure how he was feeling.

The slaves in the castle came to the doctor for regular check ups. It was what took up the rest of Lovell’s time outside of having to heal the ones the masters left broken and bloodied, which he actually preferred, but he still needed to remain professional. 

“Come in,” he said when he heard the knock on the door that signalled his next scheduled check up. It was for a shapeshifter named Xander. 

There was almost a look of defeat written on Xander’s face as he opened the door to the office. Rarely did he have to do check ups before in his life considering he never really did anything that required it. As a shifter, you can’t really get sick so what was the point? He understood the point after living in Krovs for a year but it didn’t make him feel good to know that. Now, it wasn’t that he was afraid of the doctor but he didn’t like to look weak in front of those he was weak against. “What do you need me to do?” He asked, voice deeper than he realized.
