"there's no platonic explanation for this" some of y'all need better friends
"there's no platonic explanation for this" some of y'all need to be better friends
i think it is important to recognize the ways in which your favorite thing sucks. i think it keeps u normal
prev im so sorry to put you on blast like this but please know this had me in hysterics
I'm sorry but you absolutely cannot strip Jane Austen's work of Regency politics and social etiquette without the entire narrative collapsing into nonsense.
Modern writers need to stop treating Austenās world like a generic, pretty fairy tale, and start remembering that her books were actually razor-sharp critiques of a brutal socioeconomic landscape with examinations of class, gender, power and money that are still culturally relevant today.
You can't strip the novels of characterization and make the plots work either. The plots hinge on the people in them being a certain kind of people with a certain mode of behavior - that's why turning Anne Elliot into a snarky, messy extrovert doesn't work, because the plot requires Anne to be depressed, repressed, and the only sensible Elliot ever born.
Whereas someone who respects both the characters and the original work - I'm never forgiving the ignorant shit coming out of some movie directors - can do amazing things with adaptations.
Like Clueless.
My favorite Austen adaptation is Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta. Not only did the writers lose a lot of the original pressures by moving it to modern day Atlanta and shifting race, the original was written for Lifetime, which, among its many rules, does not permit depictions of underaged sex, major villains, or unhappy marriages.
Now, you'd think this would entirely gut Pride and Prejudice. How can you maintain that plot in a world where Bingley could just divorce Jane if they don't get along (neutering Darcy's disapproval), the Bennets are happy, the girls don't have to marry to survive, and Wickham can't be, well, Wickham?
Only the author Tracy McMillan and director Rhonda Baraka understood the assignment!
Mr Bennet is now a clergyman, so his home, the rectory, is dependent on remaining employed by his parish. (Enter his young protegee, the oily Stevie Collins, who promises to keep the whole family in the house when Mr. B retires... if he can marry one of the girls.)
Mrs. Bennet wrote a book about Godly marriage and None! Of! Her! Girls! Is! Married!!! How humiliating! How bad for her reputation! How awful for book sales! GIRLS, YOU GOTTA GET HITCHED!
Mr and Mrs B snark at each other, but this time it's loving.
Bingley and Jane? Well, Jane's a war widow, you see, with a little kid, and Bingley has been known to come in too strong and then lose interest. Darcy breaks them up to force Bingley to think hard about letting that child get attached to him and then bouncing.
Lydia and Wickham? Well, he's a bit of a wild child but just like the book, it was Lydia's idea to throw herself at him - only this time she's 18 and the big moment of doubt is "will he or won't he marry her now that he's knocked her up?"
Darcy? Oh, he's running for office, funded by the rich and biracial Catherine de Bourgh, and if that snotty little community organizer Lizzie doesn't stop showing up at rallies and disrupting them by yelling about how Darcy's gentrification policies are going to destroy historic heritage sites, then CdB's gonna make her daddy lose his house, understand? You are not Our Kind, girl, know your place.
Lizzie's bestie even marries Collins, not because she needs to, but because she thinks he's got some redeeming features that Lizzie refuses to see.
In a situation where you would expect every character and every plot point to be gutted beyond all recognition, Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta keeps every bit of the beating heart of the original novel. And it does so by respecting why those characters were Like That and how they navigated the restrictions and freedoms of their world.
"Oh, all the women in Austen cry and fall down and then meet a handsome man" could never.
Mr Darcy as a character is so dear to me because he's been bastardized so much in the era of booktok shadow daddies and every regency book tries and fails to recreate what makes him good.
I will scream it from the rooftops and to everyone that listens.
Mr Darcy isn't evil!!! He isn't a shadow daddy!! Mr Darcy isn't some fratbro who changes because of a woman!!
People seem to forget that Jane Austen lived through all the drama and gossip of that era. Her books are mostly dramatized versions of people she really met or heard about. Jane Austen wrote about her own time and its issues, so he has met people like Mr Darcy. Men that were guarded because people have used them for their money, some might even crossed with Jane or her sisters. I can believe it wasn't that uncommon, isolated men that didn't have the people skills you needed in those circles.
One vital thing people need to realize is the redemption Mr Darcy does. It's not an evil man turns less evil. It's about a man who swallows his PRIDE to fix what was right. He truly apologizes in action without excuses, just with explanations.
There's something so human about Mr Darcy that I love but a lot people don't seem to see. You have been andnwill be like Mr Darcy. You will and have judge people trough yoyr experiences and traumas. Not many apologize like him though.
And if the netflix adaptation makes him into some booktok hero, I will beat netflix CEO with a mallet.
šŗ request for beta readers šŗ
[two trumpets surrounding the text 'request for beta readers]
'tis I your humble scribe seeking for readers to beta read a tale of mine. I'd like 2 for True Devotion that Remains Constant a.k.a TDRC's first draft and it's fairytale AU 'Dreams Found Within'. The AU's a T-rated-ish, possible triggering content (emotional mistreatment), and 11 chapters with 29k words.
This is my 4th beta round for tdrc since 2024, and the two readers finished it since then. Thus, there are major changes I'm considering, and the word count is around 100k-ish with 40 chapters in total. Some chapters might be short due to axed scenes. And this is the 2nd round for it's fairytale AU that is also gonna have changes, thanks to the betas who read it.
If you wish to sign up for such task, you can approach me via an ask in inbox that I'll answer privately. Or in DMs. However, it'll take me a while to set them up in Ellipsis and you need an account there to read. I have no deadline, you can sign up anytime and read at your own pace.
My main simple goals are just: grammar mistakes, any inconsistencies, whether things make sense, and all the basic details I'd have missed. Just know Iām not publishing the story bc I might read it only for me. I guess for ppl interested in it too but not publicly. just a private link for them to read in.
I want 3 (three) beta readers for TDRC and 2 (two) beta readers for its AU. You can choose either to read or read both if you want. That way, I can have enough varied responses.
Boosting would be appreciated. :3

getting characters into world-endingly intense codependent queerplatonic relationships is literally what life is all about. it is literally what we were put here on this earth to do
and you know what? Maybe I do tag my āblorbosā in a lot of random peopleās unrelated posts but Iāve never tagged a man in a post about a woman. Which is why unlike a lot of other people Iām still going to heaven
I keep remembering that no one is going to pop out of a bush and kick myass for unfollowing or blocking people.
I like characters who are women and they suck and are bad people. Bonus points if she never really faces consequences.
Hey hey donāt cry. Character who destroys themself in the end for nothing
I love female characters that fail so much, they can never truly fix their situation.
I love female characters that are horny in an ugly way to mainstream audience.
I love female characters that are angry, so angry that it becomes ugly.
I love female characters that handle grief in ways that are usually rserved for male charavters
I love female characters that are ugly in societal norm sense, but aren't changed by the end of the arc.
I love female characters that are just completly evil
I love female characters that want power to only to themselves
I love female chracters that are greedy and ambitious
This is my annual reminder to let your female characters be evil!! Diabolical!! Murderous!! Drenched in blood!! Problematic!!
Do not let the internet make you think that you will be tar and feathered if your female character does anything that can't be cutesy, romantized or sexualized.
If someone tries to say otherwise, I will personally come steal their kneecaps. People have babygirlified a lot of things. They will have to handle the same for women or they will loose their kneecaps.

sometimes u headcanon a character as a sexuality but then also ship things that contradict that. sometimes you ship things you would NEVER EVER want in canon. this is because these things are fun and silly and not legally binding.
