thinking about the time they sent me a seven year old autistic patient to investigate if he was suffering abuse because in every psychological test he kept drawing awful monsters
and I start the consultation already miserable as fuck and I give the kid some pen and paper so I can maybe communicate and see what's on his mind
and then I go WAIT A GODDAMN SECOND I KNOW THOSE MONSTERS
turns out the kid just had a special interest in Five Nights at Freddy's
at some point the nurses realized the autistic children and I were like, Really Vibing
so they decided to highkey just appoint all of them to my day and it took me almost a month to realize that the fact that I kept arriving and finding that all of today’s appointments were autistic children was Not A Coincidence
anyway this one time there was a kid who was really into christianity but it was like, specifically angels
so I’m trying to start up a conversation with him and I ask what he’s reading and he goes “do you know what a nephilim is”
and like for one hellish second my soul is suckerpunched out of my body and thrown straight into supernatural-fanfic-on-wattpad hell, and then I reassume control of my flesh prison, ignoring the mental edits of Dean and Castiel making out, and go “Aren’t those the guys who are half human and half angel?”
and the kid was so fucking happy but the mom was staring at me like ‘why are you privy to this bit of occult jesus lore’
and my heathen lesbian of a self just looks at her and goes
Joel was exhausted. He was on day three with no sleep and had run out of food a day and a half ago. This whole trip had been fucked from the start.

By the time he got to Salt Lake City he had closed the gap by quite a bit. The bodies of the men Ellie had taken out were still warm and the blood he feared might be hers had not yet dried on the linoleum floor of that haunted hospital. He had searched frantically for her, holding back the panic that threatened to overwhelm him as he imagined her lying dead in the same building he had carried her from only a year before. Then he found the wanted posters. He must have left some Fireflies alive, because now they were looking for him and Ellie.

He had ridden hard while trying to catch up to her kidnappers. Too hard. His horse had fallen in the early hours of the morning and couldn’t get back up so he’d had to make his way to this point on foot.

He was so exhausted that for a moment he thought the small, attractive woman was some kind of dream or hallucination.

“Hello, Handsome. Need a hand?” she asked with a smirk. He hesitated for just a moment, long enough to shake himself into the realization that she was not a figment of his sleep deprived imagination, before he raised his pistol to point at her. “Whoa, easy there big guy. I come in peace.” She lifted her hands in a show of surrender but did not let go of her knife. “Ellie sent me, my name’s Kenzie.” Joel lowered the gun only by a fraction of an inch and glared at her in disbelief. “Will Livingston? I don’t know what that means but she said to say it,” she said with a shrug. She did not seem nervous about having a gun pointed at her chest. If anything she looked a little intrigued. His exhausted brain was taking too long to comprehend the situation, but she had run into Ellie, that much had to be true if she knew the author of that damned joke book Ellie loved so much.
“Where is she?” he growled at her, eyes narrowing in an attempt to intimidate her. He was still trying to recover his composure after her sudden appearance.
She smiled, a small one that she seemed to be trying to fight. “She’s safe. She’s with my crew. I told them to get her out while I saved your ass.” She bit her lip and looked away from him and his gun to scan the area. Well she’s comfortable enough to no longer see me as a threat. He couldn’t help but scoff indignantly at her lack of fear. He wasn’t used to people not being afraid of him. “You came in here pretty much the hardest way you could have,” she grumbled with a roll of her eyes, “are you hurt at all?”
“No, just fucking exhausted,” Joel grumbled. He didn’t know why he’d let that slip. He shouldn’t be showing weakness to this well armed, and probably well rested, stranger. “But I’m fine, good enough to take out half a dozen of them already.” He tried to recover some of the fierceness in his voice but wasn’t sure it had worked.
Whether she was just humoring him or not he wasn’t sure, but she gave him a quick nod, “Impressive. Well, I know a way out of here, I think. Stay close, Handsome.”
Almost a year and a half ago I decided to try my hand at writing. The little make believe people in my head needed a place to play so I stuck them into the world of The Last of Us to hang out and be dangerous with Ellie and Joel while I tried to figure out how to make words happen. Blood Oaths and Ink has been a learning experience and a labor of love. I’m still working to improve as a writer and hope to one day write my own book but for now I’m just gonna unleash my long fic on the world.
