Something about sam winchester's want to do 'good' being so tied to dean. Sam's moral code? Dean winchester's approval. He was so fixated on killing lilith and guess why? To prove himself to dean. I mean thats how ruby literally manipulated him, she said "you need to become stronger" and used some phrases on sam that dean only used "thats my boy" and "sammy"

Sam only ever wanted to prove himself to his brother that he was strong and he could protect him like dean did to him.
