“I, um, just wanted to drop off this coffee.. I was, um, in the area and figured you’d probably want one. It’s a peak time in the afternoon when most Alphas get one.”

“That’s very thoughtful of you, Gillette, thank you.” Elena smiled, taking the coffee from the girl, and looking her up and down. “How are you doing? It’s been a while since we spoke. Come, sit. I have a few minutes.”

“Is it important? I’m in the middle of something.”

“I understand that, but how you can just jump to war without any proper communication with my Pack prior to the declaration? We can discuss this more civilly before going to such extreme measures.” Lydia furrowed her brows at the other woman, already done with drinking her wine. One sip was enough. This wasn’t a silly little meeting anymore.

Her lips creased and she breathed inwardly. “Why must all Omega affairs be public?” She questioned lightly. “The contract was with an Omega who’d been long in my family’s service. There wasn’t anything to announce since they’d been apart of my pack prior to the contract. Unfortunately they passed. It was a sad day, but my son is here and that’s all that matters now.” She said,  fingers tightening against the back of her hands. “As do I. We could have, though, if you weren’t so over zealous about your accusations.”

“I don’t make the accusations alone - Dare Navarre stands with me, as does the rest of her pack.” Elena shrugged, shaking her head. “I wish there could be an amicable way of settling this, but unfortunately, there isn’t. Now if you excuse me, I have some matters that I need to deal with.” She stood up from the table, certain that the two would not be able to reach an impasse. 

“I was looking forward to getting to know you as an Alpha, Miss Martin. I do this with a heavy heart, but it’s important to do so, all the same.”

“And what are your reasons?” Derek asked, brow furrowed. “Your little Omega projects? That’s worth putting your reputation, your life in danger? That’s worth the destruction you and Dare have caused?” He pointed at the window of her office. “Look at it! Wolves have died, innocent wolves that had nothing to do with the shooting. Businesses not owned by the Martins, the livelihood of families, have been destroyed because of this petty war!” The scent of burnt woods and burnt flesh was heavy in the streets, memories flooding into his mind he’d worked for years to forget.

“Is this even about you?” He remembered Dare coming to him, talking about the possibility of there being more to the attack at the Service Center. “Or are you only following the lead of a vengeful party girl?” He chuckled, a mocking tone to it. “I can assure you if your goal is not to look weak, you are doing a damn poor job at that. You were taught to use your brain, how about you start doing so?”

Elena’s question made Derek’s muscles tense, his nostrils flaring. “–And if I do? Are you going to start burning down my properties too?” He didn’t want to show it, but he couldn’t hide the pain from his eyes, the possibility of losing everything to flames once again scaring him more than he would ever want to admit.

“... You know I would never do that to you, Derek.” Elena’s voice was soft, a rare honesty in her words. There was a time their families wanted them to unite, to join two powerful packs together, but that seemed like worlds ago now. But even so, Elena knew of the fire. Imagined the pain that it must have caused him, and she had no desire to repeat that to him. “I’m not asking you to believe in my cause, I’m just asking that you trust that I know what I’m doing. This is about more than Dare, though she is more than a party girl. I have explained my reasons, and if those aren’t good enough for you, then I suppose you should be leaving. I have work to do.”

A partnership dissolving was sad enough. A friendship was even more painful. But Elena wouldn’t back down. She was too stubborn to.

The words made Derek clenched his jaw, the fact Elena seemed to have already thought of the hunters sending a shiver down his spine. “Whatever you are thinking, you need to stop.” Could she really do it? She had already boldly and publicly gone after the Martin pack, what was stopping her from requesting the hunters as well? He wanted to believe she wouldn’t, because at some point they had known each other and their family’s had trusted one another. However, the truth was Derek didn’t know Elena, just like she didn’t know him.

“No,” Derek answered immediately. “Lydia wasn’t involved in any of that.” There was no doubt in his voice or in his heartbeat, the male needing nothing but his knowledge of who she was to be sure the strawberry blonde was innocent. “Whatever you found, whatever you think you have, I can assure you it’s a lie if it points to her.” Derek honestly didn’t care if Elena pulled out actual evidence though–he was standing by Lydia, no matter what.

A bitter chuckle left his lips. “You want to talk about barbaric? Look at your work, Elena!” Derek stood his ground, his gaze set on hers, unwilling to back down. “If you don’t want to be called something, don’t act like it.” He paused, green eyes inspecting the brown ones before him. “In the past, your pack listened to mine, appreciated our advice–be smart and take it. Call this whole operations off, Elena, don’t dig the hole any deeper than you already have.”

It was a tactical, and very dangerous business move on Elena’s part, she knew that. Dare may have emotive reasons for wanting to deal with the Martin pack, but Elena knew that publically, she had to keep her focus on the omegas. A bold statement that she was willing to take on a possible threat to them? She’d have them eating out of her hand.

And if at the end of the day there was one less powerful pack in town, well... then so be it.

“While I appreciate your words, Derek, they certainly don’t move me. I have my reasons for pursuing this, and while I don’t want to make an enemy of you, I can’t be seen to back down, just because someone told me to. Do you not see how weak an Alpha that would make me look?” She shook her head, keeping her arms folded across her chest, firm and unmoving.

“I won’t be calling this off.” She frowned briefly, staring at him. “... Am I right in assuming you will be taking the Martin pack’s side instead?”

“Good. I think a lot of people underestimate me and that’s fine. My family name may seem non-existent but that doesn’t mean I won’t end up as one of the strongest.”

“I would never dream of underestimating you.” Elena smiled gently, despite the seriousness of their conversation. “Perhaps when this whole mess is over, we’ll be able to find a common ground to connect on?”

“Civilized?” Derek snapped, not taking Elena’s invitation to sit. “You just declared war, minutes after vandalizing and burning Martin properties, and sacked their manor while Lydia’s son was inside. The moment to be civilized is long gone, you made sure of that!” His hands were balled into fists, doing his best not to shift.

“What’s in your best interest is to stop this, Elena. A gut feeling is no grounds for this attack, all you are doing is hurting innocent people! You just made one of the most powerful packs in Beacon Hills your enemy and became a threat in the public eye. The rest of us have every right to request hiring the hunters and have you killed, do you understand that?”

“Just as much as me and Dare have every right to hire the hunters to have someone killed for us. You’re not the only one with the Argents number.” Elena raised her eyebrows in challenge, still remaining calm. “The Martins were involved in election fraud, and killed competition in cold blood. For all we know, they leaked the photographs of Scott and his husband to the press as well.” Elena stood up so she was on eye level with Derek, staring at him.  “Do you want someone like that to be in charge of your town, Derek? I know you don’t have a good opinion of omegas, but condoning the murder of one, after all they do for us? It’s barbaric.”

“And her son was fine, I ensured that the nursery was not touched, and his nanny remained with him at all times. I’m not some kind of a monster!” She snapped the last part, offended that he could think she would lay a finger on a child.

Derek entered Elena’s office, paying no mind to the secretary that attempted to stop him, slamming the door closed behind him and right in their face. He was mad, not bothering to hide it, the news of what had been happening around town, and seeing the chaos as he drove to see the Alpha responsible for half of it, pushing many emotions to the surface. He hadn’t cared too much for the Romans, the pack having no relation to the Hales, his only concern being the young brunette who he had already confirmed was alright. The Martins however, that was a different story, and Derek wasn’t about to stand idle while their lives were put in danger and their businesses were burnt to the ground.

“What the hell do you think you are doing?” he demanded, standing in front if Elena’s desk. “Are you insane?!”

Elena had only just got off the phone with another important part of the plan when Derek stormed in, and she sighed, shooing away her secretary. She blinked at his anger remaining calm, and once he stopped shouting, she motioned for the chair next to him.

“There’s no reason we can’t talk about this in a civilised way, Derek.” She shrugged, leaning in. “I’m doing what is necessary, and what is in the best interests of everyone. The Martins overstepped the line, and as such, I have every right to attack them if I deem it necessary.”

“My club better be untouched Ms Bellamy. Mine’s is a wrath neither you or Dare want that.” Kai states, her gaze piercing into the other alpha’s before turning to the sight of another Martin owned building being apprehended.

“I understand that, Miss Sato. I’m aware of the club you share, and I’ve already made it clear to my people that under no circumstances should it be touched.” Elena explained, smoothly. “I don’t wish to make you my enemy.”

Lydia didn’t touch her wine, her lips were tight and she just stared at Elena. “I won’t deny whether he had involvement or not, but I can’t confirm it, either. He’s a man of his own will and if he is behind such a horrible thing, I can assure you it isn’t because of my candidacy. He wasn’t in favor of my running.”

She shook her head a bit and moved her glass to the side, elbows resting on the table as she laced her fingers again, looking very intently at the other Alpha. “Persecute him, if you must, but don’t terrorize my pack until you have proof to. Go through our emails and phone records and our  bank statements if you must, but if my word means anything to you, then let it be said that I and what I know of my own personal staff in Pack Martin, have no involvement in this.”

“Persecuting him involves going after the entire pack. His homes. His businesses. His pack members. Things have to get a little messy in wars. I’m sure you understand it’s nothing personal.” Elena was a shrewd businesswoman at times, one used to getting what she wanted, and though a pack war was a new territory for her, she didn’t see why the skills she had couldn’t transfer to this situation.

“We’ve noticed a lot of mysteries surrounding your dealings with omegas, too... You don’t mention you had a contract until the child is with you, and the omega conveniently dead?” Elena smiled sweetly, pulling out her phone to give Dare and her people the word to begin their attacks. Soon, armed guards would be storming with Martin Manor to seize anything of value, and any documentation to investigate further. “I do wish we’d been able to meet on better terms, though.”

Lydia waited in silence, hands transferred to her lap now as she sat back in the booth, observing the other Alpha. Her brow rose at her words, lifting her fresh wine glass up when it was delivered, taking a small sip before settling it down. “And what concerns are these?”

“We know he was behind the attack on Natalie White.” The trail all lead back to him from what her investigators had found. “Which means the blood of her and all others who were injured are on your pack’s hands. As well as the emotional trauma to everyone who had to witness it.” She finished her glass of wine, eyes narrowed.

“And I’m sure that’s not the only thing he’s done to secure your candidacy. Your pack are a danger to the omegas of this town, to the Alphas of this town, and simply put, I’m here to ensure something is done about it.”

The appointment was out of place, certainly, but any opportunity to get free wine was a good one. When she walked into the restaurant, she spotted the other Alpha and her party, giving a slight nod up at her as she approached, sliding into the other side of the booth. “You as well, Alpha Bellamy.” She said, putting her purse down beside her and following suit with the wine list. “You may. I’m not particularly picky.”

She glanced over the list before settling it down, hands folding on top of it as she looked at the other woman. Her brow raised. “You called this meeting rather urgently, is everything alright?”

“I’ll order the drink first. We can discuss things after that.” She smiled, asking the beta waiter for a bottle, waiting in silence until he delivered it. Discussions of war were a thirsty business, after all.

“Myself and Alpha Navarre have concerns regarding your father. And in the interests of everyone, we will be taking it upon ourselves to address these concerns in any way we deem necessary.”

” I just can’t turn my back on you for a minute Beacon Hills can I? What a mess, four of my allies at war with one another.” Kai sighs walking along the street, the fire and ‘dust’ settling somewhat. “Well I guess it’s time to choose a side.”

“I can’t speak for the McCalls, but I can assure you there are valid grounds otherwise.” Elena explained, standing back as several of her guards entered a building registered to Carl Martin, yelling for people to get out of the way.

The past few weeks had been full of hard work, perseverance, and plenty of money thrown at private investigators, lawyers, and other people, all leading up to one thing - the reason Elena was sitting in an upscale restaurant on the edge of Beacon Hills. Carefully chosen for being within city limits, but private enough. She’d left a message with Miss Martin’s secretary for her to meet with her, and how she expected her to come.

Spotting the red head, Elena slipped into a seat opposite her. “Miss Martin, so glad to meet you.” Her charm was notched up to the maximum, and she placed her handbag down. Picking up the wine list, she smiled gently. “May I order for the both of us? This won’t take long, but long enough for a few glasses of wine.”

Garrett shrugged his shoulders when the woman said that she had never seen him here before allowing his hand to shake hers. “I don’t really get out much, although I’m trying to do so more often now. I don’t want to be that guy at my apartment complex.” Garrett joked.

“I’m sure a handsome face like yours could never be that guy.” Elena teased, brushing hair away from her face.

Theo shrugged his shoulders, it was hard to process but it wasn’t like he wasn’t expecting it at some point. Who the hell would want Theo Raeken? They guy who worked with the Dread Doctors. He almost laughed at the thought. Karma was catching up to him, now he was collarless, with a target on his back. 

“I would hardly say that, I deserve what I get.” He shrugged his shoulders once more, then shook his head. “No. I’ve gotta figure something out. I tried calling my sister but she’s been avoiding me since she’s left,”

“Then let me help.” She said softly, not wanting to push too hard, remembering how that approach hadn’t exactly worked with Gillette - apparently homeless omegas in California were so much more stubborn than those in New York. 

“I have heard of the things that you were involved in... So I understand that being on your own may be dangerous for you. If you’d like to stay at my home for a few days, I could keep you safe at least.” A gentle hand on his shoulder, still trying to be cautious, knowing it was hard to manipulate a past manipulator. “Then if you’re comfortable there, maybe we can work out something more permanent?”
