Graduation day.. First one on the top left!! 😀 #masterofnutrition
What exactly does it mean to be an accredited college for a major in dietetics? because I looked up schools in MA, RI, and CT for schools offering the major but only Framingham and uconn were accredited out of 6 that had the major
Accredited is a big deal when it comes to your education. Essentially it means the school has met pertinent criteria when educating students. For instance: they have the required courses offered, the faculty is capable of educating on the necessary topics, they assess student learning, and much more. If a school is not accredited in nutrition, that means you will not meet the minimum requirements to get an internship to become a Dietitian. (Side note: an internship is a required component to becoming a Registered Dietitian/RD, after that you must take and pass a board certification exam. Once you've past the exam, then you can officially be a RD- aka a nutrition expert). I would definitely continue to make sure the school you go to is accredited. If you go to The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' website you can learn more about what schools to attend and what it takes to be a dietitian. Visit: www.eatright.org Best of luck on your endeavors!
I just found out I am lactose intolerant. However, I cannot stand anything for breakfast except cereal. Rather than skipping this meal entirely, I would like to find some dairy alternatives. What would you suggest? Which is the "best" for a college student on the go? ie: almond, soy, rice, coconut, etc. Thanks!
You can definitely opt for milk alternatives such as soy, rice or almond milk. Make sure to get the ones that are ENRICHED. That means they have added calcium, very important. You can also opt for Lactaid milk (milk with no lactose) or you can take a supplement when eating dairy products. Although I generally prefer not to suggest suppleness for clients, you can take lactase (and enzyme that digests lactose) and experience relief web eating dairy products. I would save this for when you really want some of your favorite ice cream. Final note, you will want to make sure to bolster up on foods that have calcium so you don't become deficient from not eating dairy products (as dairy products are generally an excellent source of calcium). Some non-dairy calcium sources include: okra, spinach, broccoli, white beans, canned sardines or salmon (with bones), and calcium fortified foods such as soy milk, some cereals and orange juices. Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions 😀
Is there a such thing as a detox that actually works? Or is it all fake?
Nope, not really. Sad truth. However... If you reduce the amount of fast-food, processed, boxed, convenience, pre-prepared foods... Then you will feel better. It will probably even beat the feeling you get with a cleanse, as you are not hungry and cranky from not eating while doing a cleanse. Try for increasing the amount of *whole foods* you eat. Eat more fresh fruits and veggies, and more foods prepared from scratch. Now, if you have allergies... That is a different story. If so, let me know and we can talk a similar but slightly different strategy.
#HappyNationalDonutDay. This dietitian still celebrates. #happyfriday 😀 (at San Antonio Hospital)
Reliving last night's dinner as a salad. Compliments of @agcoughlin, thank you! It is just as good today as it was last night ☺
Yes, that is donut shaped chalk at #Target. I ❤ it! (at Target)
My food safety project from when I was a student at Mt SAC. Now in teaching here! Yay 😊
I love this quote!!!
Weekly batch of chips made! Love my #pamperedchef tool! This week I tried making salt and pepper chips- yum!
Since I don't have enough pictures of food posted... Here is one! 😁 My heart healthy homemade potato chips using some amazing #pamperedchef products. I sliced the potato, gently brushed with olive oil mixed with fresh garlic, sprinkled with parsley, then microwaved for 5 minute and Voila... tasty chips everyone chips enjoys! Did you know a Mediterranean diet is linked to reduce risk of heart attack and stroke? It also has been shown to reduce the 'bad' cholesterol and triglycerides in your body. Eating a Mediterranean style diet includes a diet high in olive oil, nuts (walnut, almonds, and Brazilian nuts), fruits, veggies, legumes and whole grains. Want to learn more? Let me know, I can help!
Happy St Patty's day! Just got home from work... Now time to relax and prepare my lecture for class tomorrow. Topic: Fiber is Sexy!
#Oatmeal, one pear, 1/2 Tbsp of brown sugar, and a touch of rice milk. #Yummy breakfast. Happy Sunday!
Brandon's (@brandoncoughlin) hard work paid off with some awesome ribs! For me it's an #almostallergenfree dinner... With the exception of the cornbread. The baked potato casserole for me was made with rice milk, the family had regular milk and cheese. We love some BBQ influenced food 😊
Vacuum sealed my first jar of lettuce. You are looking at a portion of my lunch tomorrow... Add fruit & dressing and I'll have some yummy eats 😊 #freshfoodporn
Trying to get creative and eat #allergyfree... Spinach, dried cranberries, shredded apples, rice cake for croutons and orange vinegar dressing. I'll make it again, minus the "croutons." I'll have to re-attempt those differently. At least my throat doesn't hurt... #EOE #EOEdiet
Does my daughter knows the way to my heart, or what?! A #fruit person complete with: a strawberry 🍓 head, pineapple 🍍 body, bananas 🍌 for arms, cherries 🍒 in the sky... Oh, don't forget carrots for legs! I think I will have to repost this for #NationalNutritionMonth next month! My daughter is a #dietitianintraining! ❤🍴#rd
