@youre-the-heart
i love how the byers are a family of flannels and the wheelers are a family of sweaters
im stuck on the way he hesitates. i think about the mike wheeler hesitation all the time. the poor boy is so deep in self hatred even as young as twelve years old that he hesitates to ask for comfort from his literal mother oh shoot me
i miss my smalltown boy repressed homosexual lesbian long hair season four mike wheeler lowk sentences that would send a victorian child into a coma
something i think isn't talked about enough is how much they dumbed down the core four from season 1.
like i think people tend to forget that these kids are SMART. like really fucking smart. while dustin has always been the main intelligent character, mike, lucas, and will, were all very capable and loved science just as much as him. lets not forget that mike, dustin, and lucas understood the physics of alternate dimensions, analyzed patterns that allowed them to track down the gate, and literally saved their friend at age 12.
bring back the science in the sci-fi show.
(and no, don't bring up the wormhole. that literally didn't matter in the grand scheme of things and was just put there as a random plot twist that added no inherent value)
mike going from alternative outcast who hates conformity to being your average boring and basic miserable middle aged guy is insane.
mike wheeler, who spoke out against the satanic panic. mike wheeler, who was friends with the bullied. mike wheeler, who didn’t want to be popular. mike wheeler, who doesn’t stand for anything anymore.
+ Bonusss💛💙

On Finn on SNL...
Before we get upset, let's have a think and digest. Some initial thoughts I had - why were there so many queer/gay jokes about Finn/Mike? Every. single. skit.
Many of the writers of SNL are queer themselves, and it would be odd for them to make fun of people thinking a character (i.e. Mike) is gay and shipping him with a canonically gay character (i.e. Will).
Especially considering that yes, while Bylers are a loud part of the fandom, we're still in the minority compared to the GA.
So, why do an SNL sketch that, on the surface, seems to be 'mocking' Bylers (i.e. mocking the idea that anyone could ever interpret Mike as being queer). Feels weird right?
And they also didn't outright mock Byler - they just made fun of the length of Will's coming out scene and how it dragged on because Will seemingly kept dancing around the word 'gay' and convincing everyone he was just a normal dude.
If they were really going to 'mock Bylers', gayness wouldn't have been the core theme of the whole SNL show. It would've been an offhand jab or one scene. I'm sure that, if S5 was true queerbait, adding fuel to the fire in this manner wouldn't bode well for Netflix, the Duffers and even Finn himself in the long run.
To me, the fact that every single skit and every single joke was somehow related to Finn being queer (or portraying a queer character) felt like they were intentionally making fun of the GA for not picking up on the queercoding of Mike Wheeler.
He's queercoded to different degrees in every skit and the writers are literally asking us - how obvious does it need to be before people catch on?
Heated Wizardry - this speaks for itself (explicit)
Boys day - this is a jab at Mike and El's relationship. Finn is portraying a 'straight' character who has a tomboy girlfriend and clearly doesn't realise that the only reason he's into her is because he perceives her as 'one of the boys'
The dark orbit - he's literally erotically being spoonfed syrup by a man who he then kisses on the cheek
Mike Wheeler as Carrie Bradshaw aka the stereotypically 'fruity' gay who gossips, sniffs coke and loves cocktails. 11 being portrayed by a man at the end... (bonus point: Ted Wheeler mention using blue and yellow text)
Finn's monologue joke about being scared of demos who look like female genitalia (we were literally making the same jokes about the huge CGI monster in the finale)
The podcast skit - "I'm not trying to walk around all thick scaring the huzz" - mocking the chronically online redditors/podcasters who make blatantly homoerotic comments (but no homo though!)
There's probably more I'm missing but I mean... come on ...
I highly doubt this was supposed to be a homophobic campaign, as people are making it out to be - 2026 is bleak, but it's not THAT bleak!!!
(remember that Heated Rivalry, of all shows, has hit mainstream media and is thriving!!!)
EDIT: to add to this, I think the ultimate message is: which gay stereotype do we need to adopt for people to get the message?
Season 4 OBVIOUSLY depicts Mike as being in love with Will's feelings - shouldn't that be enough? Why do we need to shoehorn him into a box for people to UNDERSTAND?
I refuse to believe Michael wheeler was Accidently queer coded through songs, dialogues, expressions, props and colours for 4.5 seasons he was meant to be gay istg bylers set up was NAWT an accident
‘a desperate cleric slamming every healing spell so hard to bring someone back to life, that the ground is forced to grow plants and flowers around the body’
‘decades later, guarded by a forest of roses and thorns, lies a corpse refusing to rot’ 🌼
I know it's been said, but the duffers using queer coded songs, about nonconforming love (heroes/purple rain) by queer artists to queerbait the fandom and boost the straight couple makes me so mad actually, more than all the plot holes this season.
“it was purple rain because el loves purple and they met in the rain!”
i fear if that is the thought process behind that song choice, the writers must read at a second grade level because oh my god it makes that scene even worse
will gets drunk and he becomes a party animal, mike gets drunk and he starts sobbing hysterically
episode 9 happened off screen btw
Why do I still love Mike? Because I still 110% believe Mike is gay and I will until I AT LEAST get a long paragraph all explaining these:
1. Why has Mike literally NEVER showed any interest in girls? He didn’t care about Phoebe Cates or the princess (he preferred the king).
2. Lucas says Max is “perfect”, Dustin says “Phoebe Cates is only hotter” about Suzie (rip duzie btw). The ONLY thing Mike compliments about El is her powers (and her wetsuit but you cannot tell me that wasn’t forced af).
3. Why was he so flustered with Eddie? And he literaly grew his hair out to look like him. I actually did similiar things at that age with rockstars I had a crush on (failed tho).
4. All the closet and rainbow imagery with Mike.
5. “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls” the fact that everything else he said came true for him… and he had NO idea Will was gay😭
6. In the Closet (at Rink-O-Mania).
7. The half-hug-shoulder-pad, again he had NO idea Will was gay or liked him…
8. "We're friends. We're friends." again, he didn't know Will was gay or liked him, so who was he convincing...
9. What was with the entire "Mike's just trying to be as normal as possible"?
10. Why did he want a hot orange mohawk?
11. Steve has posters of women in bikinis, Nancy has a Tom Cruise poster, Mike has a poster of a buff dragon, again him showing no attraction to girls...
12. During season 4, the costume designer talked about how she used triangles on Robins outfit to hint at the lgbtq+ stuff, Mike had a triangle on his shirt.
13. The one way sign pointing to his closet, and it still being there even in the epilogue.
14. Him keeping a binder og Wills drawings but throws Els letters in the trash.
15. The unfinished rainbow puzzle (and DON'T come at me with the "he was looking at the book", yes he was, but they didn't need to put the puzzle then).
16. The constant parallelles with Mike and Will, Robin and Vickie.
17. Him literaly checking mutiple boys out in season 4.
18. The shots of him smiling and being passionate with "boy" in the background vs him looking disgusted with "women" in the background.
19. Why was his first place to look for a sub even the wrestling team?😭
20. The spent 12 hours on the van scene and still kept Mikes lip glances in?
21. Even after "friendzoning" Will he looked at his damn lips😭
22. He still couldn't tell El he loved her, in her last moments btw.
23. The music playing during Mikes confession lie in season 4, is calling "You're the Heart" why is even the background music associated with Will?
24. The entire "I never want you to feel like you have to hide anything from me" in season 1 and Mike saying "she wouldn't understand" about his mom.
25. Mike in the epilogue literaly screams closeted gay boy. Sorry not sorry.
so long, wheeler
