You barely had any time to react before feeling the pair of familiar arms wrapping around you. The girl whom you once loved and thought you’d never see again was here. She wasn’t just here, but you were in her arms.
“What- what are you doing here?!” You were able to cough up through her tight embrace. “Isn’t it a bit obvious why I’m here?” the brown girl chuckled with that rich laugh you’d heard so many times in the past. “Of course, it was obvious. Why did I even ask that?” You thought to yourself, quickly becoming flustered from the lack of thinking skills that you had in that moment.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming to LA? I could’ve shown you around- or you could’ve stayed at my house, you know my parents love you.” In your mind, you had thought she had completely forgotten about your existence.
For her to act like you two were okay and hadn’t lost contact was confusing. You didn’t resent her for it, of course, the phone did work both ways. But there was still a pit in your stomach. “Must have slipped my mind, you’re kind of squeezing me though.” She wasn’t hurting you or anything; you just needed it to be over.
The Tamil girl glanced down at your waist, where her arms were wrapped around you, and let's go with slight hesitation. “fuck, sorry.” At the same time, Sophia walked up to the two of you to introduce herself to Lara. The two of them started talking and getting into a flowing conversation. You took this as your chance to silently slip away and into the dance studio.
You decided to get a head start on stretching whilst others were still making conversation. Whilst stretching your mind was going 100 miles per hour. How could Lara be calm about this, who just hugs someone they haven’t seen or talked to in 3 years? You would be lying to yourself if you said you didn’t miss her, the way she hugged you, her laugh, her voice…. “shit. I can’t fall for her again.” You mumbled to yourself with your head in your hands now.
“What was that?” You jumped from the sudden voice that came from behind you, making you whip your head around to be met with the sight of Megan standing oddly close to you. “Jesus, you scared the shit out of me.”
“You’re avoiding my question.”
“You know what question?”
“That, the thing with the new trainee.” Was it that obvious? You looked at Megan, not quite meeting her eye. “Oh, you mean Lara? It’s nothing.” You tried to brush it off and continued to stretch, but of course, like the curious person that Megan was, she decided to join you on the floor of the studio and started to “stretch”. In other words, she was just making it look like she was doing something. “Yeah…. right, you look like someone just killed your puppy, but also stressed and confused all at once.”
A confused look coated your face now, that was probably the weirdest way to describe how you're currently feeling. “How do you know her?” The Chinese girl asked, having completely forgotten that she was supposed to be pretending to stretch. “She was my best friend from like middle school til the start of freshman year.”
“Was?” the brunette girl asked curiously from her seat on the floor. You simply nodded before continuing, “She moved away to LA, and we just sort of lost contact, I guess. I wasn’t expecting to see her, that's all.”
You weren’t looking to create a situation out of something from the past, so you simply stated the truth, some of it at least. Megan didn’t fully believe the simplicity of the situation, but she reluctantly didn’t ask questions about it anymore. But something in you was telling you that the girl would ask more about it later.
Almost as if it were on queue, other trainees started to pile into the room with Nikky strolling in behind them. This first day really was not going to go easy on you. During the practie you could’ve swore that you felt eyes on you, but every time you checked to see if someone was staring, there woud be no one even looking your way.
Once practice was over for the day, you were worn out, and you had definitely underestimated how difficult this would be. You ended up on the floor once again, but this time face down into the floor in a starfish position. The floor was cold, exactly what you needed in this moment. You felt a nudge on the side of you foot, ignoring it to succumb to the cold feeling of the studio floor.
“you can’t just lay here like a sack of potatoes.” you flipped around to see the familiar filipinna stretching out her hand for you to take. You groaned, but reluctantly took her hand and pulled yourself up from the floor. “Rough day?” Sophia asked and handed you a bottle of water. You quickly accepted the bottle and chugged in your water. “I know you said that it was going to be hard, but not this hard. I think I’m dying, Sophia.”
“You’re not dying, we’ve all been there. Your body needs to adjust.” You groan even more at this feeling, the aching of your legs. You took another sip of the cold water that the other girl had brought you and thanked her, but not without a bit of complaining. “Well, it needs to hurry up with the adjusting.”
From the door, you could hear someone laughing at your said comment. That laugh you were so familiar with. Lara walked over to the two of you, even though she had trained for as long as you and was new to this, just like you; somehow, she still looked flawless. Her hair was still neatly in a ponytail with a few baby hairs sticking out, making it look even more effortless. Her makeup had barely budged an inch despite the small droplets of sweat on her forehead.
“How are you not dying right now?” you asked her in a confused and dramatic way. “Maybe because my ass isn’t over heating in a sweatshirt. You should take it off to cool down.” The tamil girl tried to tell you, you weren’t about to do anything she told you to do. “But I like this shirt” You could feel and hear the slight whine in your tone, annoyed, hungry and tired y/n wasn’t a good combo.
The two of you bickered with each other, so much so that you two hadn’t noticed that Sophia was nowhere to be seen. You sighed and ended up reluctantly taking off your sweatshirt. “See, was that so hard?” Lara teased you and ruffled the top of your head. You weren’t sure how to feel, but the small flutters in your stomach were definitely betraying your mind.
