How to help an anxious or sad little

It can sometimes be a challenge to help sad or anxious littles, and while not everyone copes in the same ways, these are a few things that help me feel better.

🌜 Put on a movie we like to watch, turn down the volume so the sound isn’t overwhelming

💜get some blankets for us to snuggle in, throw one in the dryer if you’re feeling extra nice

🌜 make me something easy to eat like mac & cheese or fruit

💜 give me some water in a sippy or cup with a straw

🌜 If sounds are too overwhelming try to snuggle me or pet my hair

💜 give me my favorite stuffies to cuddle with

🌜 talk me down from what’s making me sad or anxious, sometimes small things get big in my head

💜 talk to me about a funny story

🌜 make fun plans with me for later so I have something to be excited for

💜 rub some of my favorite lotion on me to calm me down

🌜 give me something to fidget with

💜 take me somewhere quiet and secluded where I can scream my lungs out

🌜 push me on a swing

💜 play rain sounds

🌜 let me know you’re there for me

👎things you shouldn't say to your little👎

💧You’re too needy/clingy. (As a caregiver, you sorta signed up for this. We needs attention, and saying that we’re too much work or that we’re too clingy, that’ll make us feel really bad. A lot of us worry about that already, worry about being too annoying or clingy.)

💧You’re being childish. (When said with a negative tone/connotation. Of course we’re being childish; that’s exactly what a little’s personality is. So when you say it negatively, or act like it’s something they shouldn’t do, that could be risky; it might cause them to think being little at all isn’t okay or that it’s annoying.)

💧You’re worrying for stupid reasons/just stop worrying (maybe try being a bit more patient? Even if you don’t understand why they’re so anxious doesn’t mean it’s not okay. And saying this negatively could cause them to be more anxious. Try being calm and gentle.)

💧I already told you this/how many times do I have to say/why don’t you believe me the first time. (Littles need reassurance a LOT. A lot of us are really insecure and anxious among other things. So saying these things when we try to talk to you about what’s bothering us, it makes us feel bad. If we ask the same question a lot, chances are that even if we know the answer, hearing it can help us feel better.)

💧Do it yourself/I’m not doing that for you/you can do that on your own. (It’s okay to not want to do everything for your little, but saying it like that can be hurtful. Note: I don’t mean saying these things using your daddy voice isn’t okay. But rather when you say these things with malice.)
