The forest surrounding the shooting locations for season 3 of the Witcher were beautiful. Ancient and shrouded in mist, Henry loved disappearing for long walks with Kal after a tiring day of filming, the cool and quiet glades and valleys, a place where he could both rid himself of thoughts but also be alone with them. Kal loved them too, bounding through long bracken, snuffling like a pig through pine needles and long grasses, chasing the scent of creatures long since hidden thanks to his less than quiet adventures.
As Henry climbed the gentle incline he barely felt the hill thanks to his strong muscles, realising he couldn’t hear his bear-pig of a dog he called out;
Stopping he listened intently, turning until he heard a faint snuffling, before picking up his pace. Emerging from high damp pines Henry came upon a misty glade, finally seeing Kal snuffling against a tall dark stone;
The dog didn’t listen, and it was only then that Henry could see he was eating something.
~ He shouldn’t be eating those ~
Panic struck Henry at the voice that seemed to cling to his skin like a serpent, and he was quickly lurching towards the stubborn furball before pulling him away from a crop of mushrooms.
~ He will need a healer ~
The voice was seemingly in Henry’s head, but he realised the worry of the situation, pulling the fungus from Kal’s mouth and quickly clipping the lead onto his collar;
“C’mon boy, lets get you home”
Pulling Kal on the lead the mist swirled around Henry’s legs, quickly making his way out of the glade and towards home.
They did not make it home. Once they’d reached the road at the edge of the forest Kal had started to tremble and shake, Henry scooping the huge dog into his arms just as a farmer was passing in a Land Rover.
Fifteen minutes later the door to the veterinary surgery crashed open, Henry cradling Kal’s limp body;
Nurses in green scrubs ran to help, calling out for assistance. Soon Henry was standing nervously in the examination room, arms wrapped around his body as he paced back and forth.
“What did he eat?” another nurse ask
“There were these mushrooms, he had run off and when i got to him he was wolfing them down”
“Do you remember what they looked like? What colour they were, how big they were?”
“I… I don’t know, they were light brown i think?”
The head Vet quickly came to stand in front of Henry;
“We’ll need to pump his stomach to get any remaining undigested fungus out, but we really need to see the type so we can treat with the correct anti toxin…”
“I… I can go back to the forest?” Henry stammered; “Yes, i’ll do that”
Thankfully the farmer had waited, worried about the big man with the even bigger dog, so when Henry came running out to the old muddy landrover he rolled the window down;
“Can you take me back to the forest? Kal, he’s eaten poisonous mushrooms, i need to get one so they can treat him”
“Get in lad” he nodded as he puffed on his pipe.
Henry was sprinting through the forest, the sound of the Land Rover engine idling noisily slipping into the distance as the mists closed in behind him. For a moment he lost his bearings, before he heard the voice;
As if spurred on by magic, he could feel the panic setting in, but as his strong legs carried him the glade came into view and this time he could see the stone circle. He tried to remember where Kal had been, quickly circling the ring of stones, cursing as he came up empty handed at each one.
He yelled out to the forest, staring as the mists swirled around him until they started to form, a familiar voice - the one that had guided him - soothed his soul, the face and body forming out of the mists until a beautiful woman was sitting atop of the biggest stone.
Henry was taken aback. He had literally seen her form from the mists, her beauty almost otherworldly;
“Your beast. Is he with a healer?”
“Yes, but they need to know which mushrooms he ate so they can treat with an anti toxin” Henry turned around, gesturing to the stone circle that seemed to now be devoid of any fungus; “I can’t fucking find any more!”
He felt a cold hand on his arm and turned suddenly, letting out a help of surprise as the woman disappeared into the mist before reforming on another rock, crossing her shapely legs, a smile creeping over her face.
“Faye? Your name is Faye?”
“No, i am Fey…” she sighed and rolled her eyes; “A fairie”
“You’re a fairy?” Henry said skeptically, pinching the bridge of his nose before letting out a sigh and looking back to the beautiful, very much full human sized woman; “Ok, whatever. Can you help me or not?”
“I can help you” Her voice was suddenly next to him and he jumped having not seen her move; “But there is a price”
“What? Whatever the price, i’ll agree”
She stood on her tip toes, the damp grass between her toes as she ran her finger up his neck to his chin, her orange eyes glinting with a dark desire;
“Okay. Whatever” Henry agreed quickly, annoyed at the delay; “Now will you please show me what i need?”
She nodded her head and looked down;
“They are all around us, you’re standing in a Fey ring”
Looking in the direction she nodded, Henry watched as mushrooms started to suddenly appear in a circle at their feet. With his eyes wide he dropped to his knees;
“Thank you! Thank you so much!”
He pulled an unused poop bag from his pocket and quickly scooped one of the mushrooms into the bag, tying it and rising to his feet, already halfway from the stones when she called out;
“Don’t forget our deal Henry”
It didn’t even occur to him that he hadn’t told her his name.
It had been two weeks and thankfully Kal was now home, safe and well, if a little thinner having been put on a bit of a diet by the Vet. He also knew he was very much in the dog house, having cost Henry a pretty penny - four figures to be exact - in treatment bills.
But it wasn’t the cost of his best friend’s recovery that was playing on his mind, no, it was the Fey in the forest. He had spent long nights reading and researching, discovering the myths and tales that accompanied the local forests, even his sleep was plagued by her. Not that he minded, the dreams left him drenched in sweat and aching with need, her bargaining tool ringing in his mind until one day he woke knowing he needed to seek her out. As he tied his boots Kal nosed at Henry’s arm;
“No, not today bud. You’ve already been out, i need to go pay a debt”
Half an hour later Henry had parked his car on the side of the road, pulling his jacket tight around his chest as the cold mist curled around him. It was almost as if the forest’s magic knew he was coming, the mists parting to show him the correct path. When he reached the clearing he ran into the stone circle, out of breath as he span around, before she finally appeared;
“Is your beast sick again?”
“What? No…” he stood and smiled, before pulling something from his jacket pocket and unwrapping it from the small cloth. He saw her eyes sparkle with excitement as he stepped forward and pressed it into her outreached hand.
“Yes, and i’ve been thinking about the price you asked for”
“Your first born” she mused quietly, expecting what everyone tried to ask, to barter. This time however it was she that was surprised at how Henry had moved closer without her realising.
As she cradled the crystal in her palm she looked up, finally seeing the tiny patch of brown in his bright blue eyes and she realised why she had been drawn to him, he was not fully human himself; though he was unaware of this, probably a long forgotten trait from generations long ago. But the magnetism between them was undeniable, his desire intoxicating.
There in her wooded glade they became one.
The flashes of the camera’s lit up the red carpet, Henry wrapped his arm around his wife’s hip and pulled her close, her gaze turned towards him and she smiled as the reporters at the premiere called out to him;
“Henry! Faye! Congratulations! It’s been a whirlwind romance, hasn’t it?”
“Like something out of a fairy tale”
“She… Faye, she helped me save Kal when he swallowed some poisonous mushrooms on a walk”
“And how does he feel about the impending arrival?”
“He’s super excited to be a big brother”
Stepping away Henry looked into Faye’s eyes as the paparazzi called out her name;
She smoothed a hand over her swollen belly and smiled;
“We’re fine. The flashes look like fireflies… and someone is getting excited…”
Henry smiled and pressed a kiss to her lips;
This is the dress i imagine Faye wearing on the red carpet;
