Never has there been a truer tag.
Royâs eyes widened a fraction, before his firm, set expression took over again. It was curious, and even somewhat frightening, but he recognized that she hadnât done what he did with an array. Normally, he was all too conscious of the air compounds surrounding him, the smallest changes in compositions of molecules around him, but what this girl had doneâŠit wasnât like alchemy. Nor did it look quite like Alkahestry, but he had to admit that he didnât know enough to say.
It did leave one potential option; that this young girl had seen the gate, and didnât need a circle or any other sort of conductor. Perhaps the conductor was within herself. Fascinating.
âWhat creates your spark?â
âEnergy,â she simply replied. âFirebenders can manipulate their internal body heat to create flames from wherever we concentrate it.â She ignited a handful of fire in her palm and held it out for Roy to see. Continuing, she noted, âI practice the most intense form of firebending with blue flame. It is far more accurate, efficient, and deadly than normal yellow or orange fire.â
She took a deep breath in and watched the flames in her hand rise higher and burn brighter, then exhaled and allowed them to be extinguished as she closed her hand into a fist, slightly smoking.Â
âOf course,â she remarked as she turned to face a window, âsolar energy is the original source of all firebending. Emotion and state of mind do affect oneâs bendingâ- a dark look shadowed her features for a second- âbut the fact shall always remain that we rise with the sun. My brother preaches about it being a sacred art form that has been distorted by the military, but I believe that firebending is a discipline of power.âÂ
Internal thermal energy being used to create fire? If she was serious - by Alchemyâs standards, the amount of thermal energy needed to create a fire would kill a man within seconds, draining them of their natural resting body temperature. In equivalent exchange, it was simply impossible.
And yet, here she was, doing it in front of him.
Roy frowned. More deadly? That, he doubted. âYouâre simply burning a different oxygen compound level than a yellow or orange fire. It doesnât affect anything but the temperature.â If solar energy was the true source, then some of her technique had to be rooted in Alkahestry. It only made sense - using energy from the sun, which was far more likely to replenish itself, and taking only a fraction of that power from a long range transmutationâŠ
âIt has nothing to do with accuracy either. Although it does look nice; I assure you, it has nothing to do with deadliness.â
He watched carefully as her hand smoked, and Roy wondered briefly why she would even care about the deadliness of her flames. She couldnât have been older than Fullmetal or his mechanic was, by the looks of it. But then, Prince Ling and his bodyguard were both well trained in the art of fighting and Roy had no doubt that a young girl who would cut her own arm off would have also killed a man if she needed to.
âYour brother sounds like an interesting person.â Her country sounded like a fascinating place. And all too similar to his own.Â
But not feeling like discussing that with Azula, he casually remarked - âIt must be incredibly limiting to deal with those confines. What happens when the sun isnât visible in the sky? Or if your state of mind isnât clear? You must rely on only yourself for the proper outcomes instead of a constant like an arrayâŠâ
Azula hid a displeased frown. She wasn't used to be treated as anything other than a firebending prodigy. Her word was the law, and that was how it was always regarded. The man standing in front of her was treating her like a naive and ignorant schoolchild.
"Whatever you say," she loftily retorted. "All that I know are my own experiences to compare to others in combat."
A sudden realization dawned upon her, and it most certainly explained his doubt in her skills. "It also appears that you don't understand how chi works either. If I were you and wanted to further understand firebending, I would read up on that. Oh, and you have absolutely no idea who I am, do you?" She briefly laughed mirthlessly before continuing to address his questions.Â
Upon hearing Roy comment on her brother, she didn't bother masking the disdain in her voice. "My brother is both a fool and a weak leader who is not fit to rule this nation."
"And I'm afraid that I don't quite follow your logic. Why would you want to establish utter dependence on something else? The only thing that you can rely on is yourself. While it's true that firebending at night is considerably less effective than during the day, a master can easily channel their energy differently as to intensify their bending abilities without the sun's power." She smoothly glossed over his question about state of mind and continued, "In the end, all other things will fail, and you will be the only one left standing. I don't understand how people can put their faith into something else that implicates a set of even greater restrictions, especially when the ability to rely only on yourself is present. What are you supposed to do when the inevitable moment comes when the object in which you have placed all of your dependence fails? I, for one, am not willing to take such gambles."

Then donât come into the room, or better yet, remember that a closed door means do not enter.
Now I know where my ability to lie comes from. We both know that the door was not closed, don't try to deny it. And if my dear brother would let Ty Lee visit more often, I wouldn't have any reason to leave my room.
That earthbender girl, what was her name? Toph? I would hate to be her with being able to detect vibrations in the earth.

The taciturn manâs eyes narrowed as he caught sight of the Princess. His disdain for anything Fire Nation flared. Longshot had been good about slowly getting over his anger toward what happened, but the sight of the girl who had helped cause all the mayhem had sparked the emotions. He wanted to give her a piece of his mind.
âHow could she be following me? Why is she not even in prison.â Although his mind was filled with such anger, he kept a calm appearance. Only his eyes betrayed his thoughts.
Azula regarded the man staring at her, challenging his gaze with glittering cold eyes.
"My my, so much hostility. Let me guess, you must be one of Jet's so called 'Freedom Fighters'?"
Firebending? That sounded so similar to the Earthbending the small blind girl had mentioned. And the young teen before him seemed so similar - the same accent, the same glossy black hair. Although in all other manners they were totally different: Toph was clearly a girl who was used to talking loudly and, for lack of a better turn of phrase, being like Olivier.
This girl was more dignified, more poised, and somehow, more paranoid.
âI donât know anyone named Zuko.â Roy replied coolly, black eyes calculating her reactions. Whoever he was, however, was of great interest to this girl. âFlame alchemy is a science - the creation of Fire at my fingertips using an array. Are you familiar with somethingâŠsimilar?â
Similarly, she watched Roy carefully, his every move being read and memorized. Upon hearing Roy describe flame alchemy, her left side of her mouth curved upward with a secret amusement.
âOf course I do, but I donât need any sort of special drawing to create fire at will.â To demonstrate her point, she shot a sleek dagger of blue fire at a small tapestry hanging on a nearby wall and watched it be devoured by flames and then slide down the wall and collect into a neat pile of ash on the floor.
Royâs eyes widened a fraction, before his firm, set expression took over again. It was curious, and even somewhat frightening, but he recognized that she hadnât done what he did with an array. I know that much...
âThereâs really nothing to say at this point,â she replied cooly, diverting her attention away from her nail and returning it to Aang. âIâve been here long enough to pick up a few things, give me enough credit for that. Whatever it is that you want to hear, Iâm sure that I can deliver.â
âWhat I want to hear,â he asserted in a level tone, âis the truth, Azula. Thatâs all.âÂ
After a brief pause, she finally responded, ice delicately dripping from each word. âAvatar, Iâm doing fine. Truly, look at the quality of my life.â
âIt could be much worse, but I owe it to the mercy and pity of my dear brother,â she concluded with a poisonously sweet smile.
Aang subconsciously crossed his arms over his chest, frowning. âWhy do you have to make it out to be like that?â he asked. âLike Zuko just feels sorry for you? Heâs your brother, Azula, and Iâm sure he cares about you. I donât think he wants to see you suffer.â
"I don't think you can quite grasp the complexity of things," she exhaled as she subtly rolled her eyes, "Nor do you seem to realize the structure and dynamic of the royal family of the Fire Nation. Hah, you really were raised by monks who preached about falsities like forgiveness and compassion in everyone."Â
"Look, Avatar, all that I'm saying now is that I don't expect you to fully understand," she concluded, waving a dismissive hand.
âWho are you alchemists?â
âAlchemy is the art of using the scientific notion of equivalent exchange in order to manipulate the world. Every alchemist has their own specialty, so to say; mine happens to be a bit⊠unique. I can show you an example, if you would like.â
âOh, and it is quite the pleasure to meet you, Princess Azula. I have the feeling that we are going to be very good friends.âÂ
âIâm listening,â she evenly said as her eyes raked over his entire appearance before meeting his eyes.
âI hope you werenât too dearly fond of this wall,â he said, chuckling a bit as he clapped his hands and bent down to press them against the floor, ears taking in the sounds that were produced by the large explosion which quickly followed the spark of alchemic light which had raced from his palms to the wall. If only there had been some people fortunate enough to have been in the way; then the music would have been truly harmoniousâŠ
âThat was very small example of what Iâm capable of.â He stood up from the floor, brushing off his hands before looking back at the Princess. âAnd I am also capable of replacing the wall, if you really want, but I tend find such normal displays of alchemy to be rather dull.âÂ
Her golden eyes widened as she drank in the view of her utterly demolished wall. She crossed her arms and walked around the rubble with light steps, peering through the enormous gaping hole where the wall used to be and smirking at the thought of Zuko's face when he saw this. The best part was that there was no evidence of any firebending at all; it was a twisted way to further toy with her brother's mind.
"That was impressive," she finally remarked as she turned to face Kimblee. "It seemed almost like earthbending, but so much more powerful and destructive. Tell me more about this alchemy discipline. You mentioned something about 'equivalent exchange' laws?"

âThe blind earthbender? This is a surprise.â
âWhy is it so surprising? Feeling a bit threatened?â
âHardly. Whereâs the rest of your little entourage?â
âHow am I supposed to know?â Toph sighed, annoyed. âItâs not like Iâm their babysitter.â
Tilting her head, she grinned. âSpeaking of entourages, whereâs yours? Problems in paradise with the princess?â
"Haha," she deadpanned, "that was so terribly clever of you."

âWell, well, well, what is my little protege doing here?âÂ
She swept her father up and down with a cold glance. âI really donât think that youâre the one to speak right now,â she flippantly said. Lips curving upward slightly, she casually sent smoke trailing out of her fingertips, a reminder of the power dynamics in the room.
He narrowed his eyes, âWhat the hell do you even want?â If anyone should have their bending taken away, it was Azula.Â
"I can't pay my own father a simple visit? Though these five are certainly annoying..." she muttered as she shot a look at the guards standing closely behind her. "But it is rather flattering to know that my brother finds it necessary to send this many guards to escort me."
