Hokkaido Uni to the bay - folding bike loop
Hokkaido Uni to the bay – folding bike loop
After nursing a vicious hangover on Saturday from a bizarrely Japanese extreme late night on Fri/Sat that included visiting some outrageously expensive place where you got to sit down and talk to two random girls for about half a hour for 4000 yen, I decided that dammit, I was going to do something today (Sunday), a folding bike ride mini-adventure!

Lewes Station to Brighton Pier bike route that avoids roads
Lewes Station to Brighton Pier bike route that avoids roads
This is a very nice 14.5 km route that for almost all its length, avoids roads. It starts in historic Lewes and rises over the Kingston Downs taking in a small section on the South Downs Way with expansive views. It then descends through parks to the Brighton sea front with a brief amble along the coast touristy bike path to end up at Brighton Pier.

Blue jet lightning caught in time-lapse I was up on the roof of my holiday apartments, Darwin, Australia on the evening of 27 February 2017, taking pictures of this storm 100 km away.
A look at 2016 the hottest year globally This is our attempt at a climate related video. It looks at why 2016 will very likely be the warmest year globally, and at the recent exceptionally low sea ice extent. This took a surprisingly long time to make but was a learning experience.

(via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hSxlgc7LHU) A quick HECTIME update, nice storm moved over Darwin this evening before dissipating over the water. Brought lightning, heavy rain and 80 km/h gusts. Short lived but pretty.

HECTIME – A brief introduction
HECTIME – A brief introduction
31 October 2016
I am currently residing in Darwin, Australia, and figured it is about time that I write a post briefly explaining the ridiculousness I am up to. Basically it involves a LOT of hanging around in a coastal park in Nightcliff. HECTIME stands (loosely) for the HEctor the Convector TIme-lapse and Modelling Experiment.…

New Zealand North Island bike tour days 30 to 33: The Forgotten Highway
New Zealand North Island bike tour days 30 to 33: The Forgotten Highway
5 April 2016 (day 30): Turangi Lake Taupo camp to saddle hunters camp The time had finally come to head west from Lake Taupo towards Taranaki. This had been my ultimate destination of this tour as Mt Taranaki seemed like the perfect mountain to time-lapse given its symmetry and exposure to storms. My intention was to cycle the Forgotten Highway to Stratford and then spend a few weeks in Taranaki…

1 April 2016 (day 26): Conifer camp to Snowy Lodge The weather was soon to turn pear-shaped over the next day or two, finally got to see who was occupying those spider web balls that are everywhere, not entirely good to know though.
I headed south off the higher ground and 33 km down to the town of Reatihi.
It was an easy ride and I holed up in a nice place with a view of Ruapehu called Snowy Lodge.
2 April (day 27): At Snowy Lodge Bad weather moved in and I stayed another night in the Snowy Lodge and did a few more time-lapses. The video below contains these and one from the afternoon of 1 April.
Time-lapses from the lodge:
This video contains free Youtube music. It is Beat Your Competition by Vibe Tracks 3 April (day 28): Snowy Lodge to Desert camp I left Snowy Lodge in cold rain and biked to Ohakune. At this point I was considering taking the steep road up towards Ruapehu from there and then try and climb to the summit tomorrow. However the weather looked terrible and continuing cold with snow on the summit. I accepted that I was not adequately equipped to attempt this so instead I headed east around the southern flanks for 25 km to Waiouru. The view up to the mountain through wild clouds and showers was really quite spectacular.
In Waiouru I eyed up the so called Desert Highway to camp, where?
Waiouru with Ruapehu behind
I was not sure. It was a gentle uphill, I stopped along the way because there were some nice lenticulars forming downwind of Ruapehu:
The road actually only ascended 264 metres over 21.3 km to get to the Tukino ski area access road where I decided to try and camp. The road, however, was not really a road at all, it was a track, at times over coarse sand. It was rideable though and quite a ride too, at least the lower bit that I did. Mostly barren with sparsely distributed scrubby bush.
A few km up the track I found a sand bank with bushes that looked suitable for camping behind. I set up camp and enjoyed watching and time-lapsing the turbulence in the lee of the snowy peaks of Ruapehu.
This was truly a remarkable place, mesmerizing, wild, special.
During the night there were lenticulars under the clouds. A brief, bad quality time-lapse of this is included in the night time-lapse video below:
4 April (day 29): Desert camp to Lake Taupo (Turangi camp)
From the desert camp I returned down the track and north along the Desert Highway to return back once again to Turangi where I returned to the camp by the lake where I had been before. The sand flies were still there. The loop around Ruapehu was now complete and it was time to head west towards Taranaki.
The route for these 4 days is here http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1188785605

Sunshine Coast to Sydney bike tour, days 13 TO 17: Angourie to Nambuccca Heads
10 June: Angourie to Yuragir beach camp From the mosquito woodlands near Angourie I had to bike back to Yamba after deciding against trying the coastal walking route. In Yambda the locals were out surfing by the breakwater and I took the opportunity for a swim and a rinse of dirty clothes, first in the sea and then in a beach shower. Then the clothes were attached to the back of the bike to dry…
