A Daring Makeover
A Poolside Make-Up Tutorial
By Robin Watson-Hamilton
Goodbye, cocktail attire—and hello, swimsuit ensemble! During the summer months, it’s not uncommon for social gatherings to shift to the pool.  Just as we adjust our attire for poolside activities, we need to adjust our make-up as well. When it comes to warm weather make-up application, simpler is usually better. Here’s a step-by-step poolside make-up tutorial that will keep you looking and feeling fresh and fabulous this summer.
Step 1: Apply primer
Start by applying a primer to your face. Â Using a primer will set a clean canvas for your skin that will help the rest of your make-up be applied smoothly and last longer.
Step 2: Use foundation with SPFÂ
Apply a foundation with SPF over your primer. Â The COVERGIRL + Olay Simply Ageless Foundation feels lightweight while still providing full coverage and has SPF 22 to help protect your skin from the sun. Be sure to apply the foundation to your entire face, not just your t-zone, to ensure that all of your skin has the protection of the SPF.
Step 3: Apply powder eye shadow in neutral color
Next, apply powder eye shadow in neutral colors like beiges or light browns.  Powder shadow is recommended because it can absorb oil and won’t melt the way that cream shadows will.  Staying in a neutral color palate means that if your eye shadow starts to flake below the eye or run, it will be easier to wipe away without messing up your under eye concealer.
Step 4: Sculpt your face with bronzerÂ
Appearing sun-kissed (even if you’re not!) is especially important when creating a poolside make-up look.  Apply bronzer around your cheeks and jawline to add a little extra definition, and then to any other areas that would naturally be hit by the sun.  It’s best to avoid blush when you will be in the heat since it is normal for our cheeks to naturally get a little pink in the sun.
Step 5: Use waterproof mascara
Avoid “raccoon eyes” by using waterproof mascara.  Not only will it stay put despite sweating or being in the water, but it will stay on longer than non-waterproof mascara.
Step 6: Use a lip stain plus balm
Swap traditional lipstick or gloss for a lip stain that will last. Â Apply to your lips, and then finish by applying a clear balm over the lip stain. Â This will help your lips stay hydrated and moisturized throughout the day.Â
And remember, if you plan on taking a dip, do not rub your face with a towel when you emerge from the water.  Instead, gently pat your face dry and allow excess water to dry naturally.  It’s also never a bad idea to keep make-up remover and oil blotting papers in your pool bag for any unforeseen beauty emergencies.

5 Secrets to Staying Young
By Angie Schmitt
Age:Â 52 Occupation:Â Beauty and lifestyle blogger/vlogger, mother When I feel truly ageless:Â After finishing a challenging workout!
As an over-50 beauty blogger I get asked, "What's your secret?" all the time. I definitely have some secrets to looking younger, but they don’t include plastic surgery or expensive creams. The secret is my lifestyle!
I’ve always been an active person, I love fashion and trying new things and I don’t want that to change just because I’m getting older. It may take a little more effort and a few adjustments, but the pay-off is well worth it!
Exercise for longevity and glowing skin
Most people hate to workout, but it is the single best “anti-aging secret” I have to share. Exercise increases blood flow to the skin and organs, increases strength and flexibility and even makes us happier. I do a combination of weight training (for strong bones and muscles) and aerobic exercise (for a strong heart), and I schedule it right into my week so I’m not tempted to skip it. I never feel better or younger than while I'm doing a workout.
A youth-enhancing diet
I don't mean "diet" in the traditional sense of weight loss, but as a tool for increased health and vibrancy. What we put into our bodies has a direct effect on how we feel from moment to moment and in the long run. I avoid processed sugars and foods high in fat (to keep my cholesterol low) while taking in more foods that are loaded with antioxidants, healthy fats and omegas 3 and 6. Eating salmon, nuts, dark green veggies and colorful fruits keeps my energy up so I can do the things I enjoy without getting tired, and feeds my skin for a radiant complexion.
Trying something new
There are many perks of maintaining a healthy body, but one of the best is being able to try new things. I love to travel with my family and adventure together. I always plan at least one new activity during our vacations like white water rafting, or hiking through the jungle. I hope to inspire my daughters to lead a more active lifestyle by example. When they see mom hop on a stand-up paddleboard or whiz down a mountain on a zip-line, it gives them the confidence to try new things too.Â
Simple skin care and make-up
Good skincare and makeup don’t have to be expensive. My daily makeup routine involves using drugstore products that have great ingredients, like COVERGIRL+ Olay Simply Ageless foundation. The foundation is lightweight and the SPF protection is especially important during the summer when I look to protect my skin all day, whether I’m on the beach or just running errands.
Maintaining a youthful style
Dressing more youthful doesn’t mean dressing like my teenage daughters or dressing the same as I did “back in the day.” It means finding my own style among the current trends and wearing what’s comfortable and flattering on me. I see the term “age appropriate” thrown around a lot, and I struggle with what that really means—except that it usually means someone else is trying to make rules for how we mature women are allowed to dress.  I enjoy being a mature woman who’s breaking those old rules and using fashion to look and feel my best!
ANGIE SCHMITT is a 52-year-old beauty and lifestyle blogger and mother of two teenage girls. Angie’s blog and YouTube channel are where she shares her adventures in anti-aging with other women who want to look and feel their best while in the hot-flash years!
5 Tips to Refresh and Reduce Puffy Eyes
How Small Changes in Your Skin, Nails and Hair Can Be Signs of Something Larger
By Jeannette Graf, MD
Many changes in our health can go undetected—and this calls for routine screenings and complete physical exams at your doctor’s office. But changes in your skin, hair and nails can be signs that a shift in your health is taking place, as they are reflections of our overall well-being.
What you’re seeing: Thinning hair
What it means: Hair loses density because the diameter of the hair shaft shrinks as we age. With all the wear and tear (coloring, bleaching and blow-drying) your hair also becomes more porous and weaker. Thinning hair may also be a signal that your diet is deficient in essential nutrients, such as lean protein and Biotin (a B-complex vitamin found in Swiss chard, carrots, walnuts, almonds, milk, strawberries, raspberries, cucumbers, cauliflower and halibut).
What you can do: There are anti-aging hair care formulas that help plump up the hair shaft. You can also go easy with hot styling tools and look for hair coloring formulas that are more conditioning. Improving your diet can also help. If thinning hair remains problematic after adjusting your diet and hair care, you may also want to see your doctor. Thinning can also be a result of your body reacting to stress or a particular medication, or a hormonal imbalance. You may need to have your thyroid function tested.
What you’re seeing: Brittle nails
What it means: Your nails are made up of keratin, the same protein that makes up hair. With hands constantly in and out of water, nails expand when they absorb water, and then contract as the nails lose water. This repeated expansion and contraction and loss of water softens and weakens nails. The onset of menopause can also play a role. Estrogen levels regulate your body’s water regulation and water retention systems.  When estrogen levels are lower, the resulting dehydration can lead to weak, dry, brittle nails that easily break and split. Again, your diet could also be deficient, or you may have an underactive thyroid.
What you can do: Try to make a habit of wearing gloves when doing chores that require immersion in water, such as washing dishes. A good moisturizing hand cream as well as a nourishing oil to rub into nails and cuticles can help replace water loss. Make sure you’re getting adequate levels of Vitamins B, A, D and calcium from your food and supplements. I also recommend taking a Biotin supplement (5000 ucg) for brittle nails. Biotin supplements enhance nail growth and flexibility of the nail plate. If nails do not respond to DIY treatment and dietary fixes, you may want to see a doctor to make sure you don’t have any underlying medical condition.
What you’re seeing: Changes in the appearance of moles
What it means: If you’re noticing any change in the color, size or shape of a mole, hopefully it is because you have been doing a monthly self-exam as recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation. Routine self-exams can help you catch what could develop into skin cancer early.
What you can do: Immediately call your dermatologist for a thorough exam. If a mole looks suspicious the dermatologist can perform a biopsy to determine whether a mole is benign or not. The good news is that with early detection skin cancer is treatable. Once you have your check up, it’s also important to be diligent about using daily sun protection. Look for a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of 30 or higher.
What you’re seeing: Lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and roughness
What it means: These are signs of extrinsic aging, also known as premature aging, which is caused by poor lifestyle habits. Smoking, poor diet and lack of sleep can actually accelerate skin aging, which shows up as lines and wrinkles, rough texture and uneven pigmentation. The number one culprit, however, is unprotected sun exposure.
What you can do: Quit smoking. Smoking not only damages the fibers that provide elasticity and support needed for firm, supple skin, it also decreases blood flow and the delivery of vital nutrients to the skin’s surface. For the vitality you need to stay healthy and keep your skin glowing, be sure to eat a high-fiber diet rich in antioxidant fruits and vegetables. Along with fatigue and lack of concentration and mental focus, sleep deprivation can contribute to a dry, flaky complexion because your body has been deprived of renewing itself with proper rest.
Sun protection is also a must—not only in lowering your risk of melanoma and other skin cancers, but also to defend against the signs of premature aging, including dryness, lines, wrinkles, rough texture, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. You want to use a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. To enhance the benefits of daily sunscreen use, I often recommend a good anti-aging foundation with UVA/UVB sun filters as extra insurance.

4 Ways to Make Your Make-Up Work Harder For You
By Michiko Boorberg.
Have you ever gotten into your car after applying your make-up in the morning and realized your make-up didn’t look as good as it did indoors?  Or what about the age-old dilemma of red lipstick on your teeth? These four make-up hacks will keep you looking your best and help your make-up work harder for you.
Apply concealer in a triangular shape under the eyes
Apply your concealer in a triangular shape, with the base at your lash line and the tip at the bottom of your cheek instead of only applying to the basin of the under eye. It brightens up your whole face and gives you a clean, fresh look.
Use a combination of blush and bronzer to define cheeksÂ
We want to highlight the apples of our cheeks, and contour around the cheeks for a youthful, perky look. To do this, use a bronzer to contour the area from the side of your face to under your cheek, and then a lighter colored blush to highlight the apple.
Use your finger to avoid lipstick on your teeth
After applying your lipstick, put your clean finger in your mouth, close your lips around your finger, then pull your finger out. The excess lipstick will be removed by your finger, and won’t end up on your teeth. Tissues or paper towels can leave paper residue on your lips, so your finger is the best way to cleanly achieve this hack.
Check your make-up under different light
The intensity and color of light can drastically change the way your make-up looks, especially when it comes to making sure you have the right color foundation. When testing a foundation color for a match, make sure you check your make-up in natural, outdoor light in addition to the indoor light. It’s also important to check your make-up in different lights to make sure there are no areas in need of a touch up before you head out.
Following these expert tips will help you achieve a natural, youthful look that will keep you looking as great as you feel!

Looking the Part for the Job You Want
By Farnoosh Torabi
Age: 35 Occupation: Personal finance expert, author When I feel truly ageless: Running around with my 1-year-old son
You’re eager for a promotion and you definitely deserve it, but a quick survey of your workplace reveals some fierce competition, especially from the Millennial two desks down. To say she’s confident is an understatement.  Not to mention she’s extremely tech savvy and dresses to kill.
But it’s cool. You’ve got this. After all, age is just a number and being a seasoned professional is invaluable to any employer. The next few tips can help you climb that ladder once and for all and claim what’s yours.
Find a younger mentor to stay in the know
Companies are attracted to Millennials for their fresh ideas and energy. Rather than see them as competition, become allies. To that end, pair up with the recent college grad in the office and strike up a reverse mentoring relationship, suggests Nicole Williams, a career expert and founder of WORKS. Ask questions and get to know his or her favorite resources. Not only will it enhance your vitality, the relationship may offer a window into the newest technology, websites and apps, giving you a leg up in the marketplace, Williams says.
Enhance your online profile and share the good word
“I’ve talked to employers from almost all the Fortune 100 companies and they all agree that experience is on the top of their lists,” says Williams. So don't skimp on your online professional profile. “Ask former and current colleagues, previous bosses and past clients in different age groups to write recommendations and endorse you on LinkedIn. It’s best if they stress your up-to-date tech skills, creativity, experience and work ethic,” she says. At the same time, don’t hesitate to let your boss in on your accolades. If a client sends a thank you note for a job well done—pass that onto your higher up as an FYI. “Bosses are busy—they aren’t necessarily aware of your career wins. You need to present them.”
Make subtle fashion statements
Experiment with fashion choices that will make you feel confident in the conference room without seeming like you’re trying too hard. One technique is to integrate bold accents of color with neutral basics (think black, gray, white and tan). For example, for a little flare consider pairing a bold color pump or a statement necklace with your black work dress. The saying is true: When you look your best, you’ll feel your best.
As for makeup? Less is more
Presentation isn’t limited to your clothes, it’s your overall look, including makeup. Opt for a fresh-faced, minimal visage using a simple (and affordable) foundation like COVERGIRL + Olay’s Simply Ageless Foundation. It’s the right, light mixture to brighten up your skin. Top it off with a soft blush, mascara and nude gloss for a polished look.  Â
Participate in water cooler chatter… to an extent
Sure, share in the fun and talk about the latest episode of Girls with your colleagues or head out to after-work happy hour drinks with the team. Making friends with your colleagues builds a sense of community. Colleagues who like each other will likely work better together. But don’t go overboard. Make sure you set boundaries around “play time” so your boss knows you’re committed. If you’re working on a deadline and chatty Cathy corners you, don’t be afraid to split and say you’ve got to run back to your desk to finish a project.

I’m Facing an Empty Nest—and I Couldn’t Be Happier
By Elaine PasquaÂ
Age: 60 Occupation: Professional speaker When I truly feel ageless: When I am working and laughing with college students
Raising my two boys has been one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. From the moment I discovered I was pregnant, I jumped into this journey 100 percent, both physically and emotionally. Although I have an exciting career as a nationally recognized speaker, Evan and David have always been my number one priority. I sacrificed a lot for them and often put their needs ahead of mine.
Nothing prepares us emotionally for the time when they leave home. After we dropped our younger son David off at college, we returned to a home that felt very empty and quiet. Missing were the day-to-day activities that met his needs. His friends weren’t coming in and out.
Suddenly the house started to feel wonderfully quiet.
I discovered that my life was void of the drama, the noise, the running around—and for once I had time for myself.  In the months following, an incredible thing happened.  For the first time in 20 years I discovered me and fell in love with my new life and new found freedom.  Reframe this as a time to rediscover who you are. It’s time to focus on you, and your passions, to explore, treat yourself well and have fun. You earned it!
Rekindle your relationship
My husband and I get along a lot better when the boys are not home. Their day to day drama added a lot of stress to our relationship, and we bickered more. For the first time in over 20 years we have the opportunity to focus on us. Our time is uninterrupted, spontaneous, and we are enjoying playing together. We can be romantic any time of the day without interruption. For those of you who are single parenting, you will find that you have more time to date and to focus on developing new relationships.
Enjoy the financial freedom
Financial freedom is a great perk of becoming an empty nester. For those of you who paid for a college education, congratulations! You just got a raise! You now have more money to have fun and to save for the future.
Treat yourself well
Now is the time to exercise and to get in shape. Treat yourself to a day at the spa, get a massage, a makeover, or get your nails done. You can spend more time planning and cooking more nutritious meals for yourself.
Travel any time of year
We traveled a lot as a family but we were restricted by Evan and David’s school schedule.  Airfares, motels and other travel expenses increase in the summer months and the travel destinations are always more congested. You now have an opportunity to get away when the prices are lower and the crowds are gone. May and September are perfect months for travel!
Build a new business
Is there a business or career that you have always wanted to embark on? It’s not too late! My most fulfilling career did not begin until I was 40 years old. However, I limited the heavier travel commitments and growth until my boys were out of the house. Twenty years later, my business is gearing up with many new projects on the horizon. This is your time; people are not retiring as early as our parent’s generation did.  There is a lot of gratification that comes from a satisfying career.
Take classes
Are you interested in gourmet cooking? Would you like to learn to speak Italian or French? You can join a creative writing group or a book club. Take tennis lessons, kickboxing or yoga. You now have the time to pursue those interests you have always dreamed of.
Pursue new hobbies
You can take art lessons, learn the craft of stained glass or knit. Learn to play the piano, guitar or flute. You can take up gardening. The possibilities are limitless!
Be spontaneous—take day trips
My husband and I have discovered that we can be spontaneous and take a day trip or go away overnight. We purchase last minute tickets to a Broadway show or concert and spend the weekend in New York City. We no longer have to worry about the boy’s schedule.
Volunteer
There is nothing more gratifying than participating in community service. You can volunteer at a hospital, the library or help to organize a fund raiser.
The anticipation of becoming an empty nester is far more difficult than actually being one. Many of us discovered that when our kids return for a visit the house gets trashed. They are up all hours of the night, and the drama picks up right where it left off. You come to fully appreciate your new found freedom and ability to maximize your potential opportunities. Embrace it and enjoy this time of your life!

Yes, You Should Ask a Guy on a Date
By Michelle Herrera MulliganÂ
Age: Old enough to know when relationships are working and when they’re not. Occupation: editor-in-chief, Cosmopolitan for Latinas When I feel truly ageless: When I'm living in the moment... making ridiculous jokes with friends, falling in love, trying something new.Â
All the best things in my life were my choice. It started when I was 18 and found the right college for me, 8 hours away, out of state and out of my price range. I wanted it, so I hunted for scholarships, made the move and made it work. The same thing happened when it came to finding my dream job: my brain was practically rippling with muscular intentions when it came to representing the young, modern Latina, so when I got a chance to edit a whole magazine on the subject it felt like the true manifestation of my dreams. That’s why when it comes to finding a man, I don’t get the “Let him take the lead” approach. Why sit around and wait for someone to choose you? Haven’t the best things come when you stood up and claimed what you wanted?
In my 20s, I met a man I knew I liked instantly. He was funny, adorable and kind, and said things so ridiculously smart he made my head hurt. He was also my friend’s ex, and seemed to be keeping his distance. I kept running into him and he never seemed to make a move.  One day, I saw him at a concert and I just couldn't wait. I checked with a friend, “Should I ask him out?!!” She gave me the standard, “No, if he really wanted to see you he would ask you himself.” I almost left the show and called a cab but instead I walked up to him and asked him on a date. We were together for 11 years.
As a single woman dating since then, I can tell you almost all of the relationships with the most potential started with me taking the lead. As grown, independent, smart women, it’s time for us to own our love lives, ladies.
Worried about what men will think? Don’t. A recent Cosmo/Esquire survey showed that 88% of men “don’t care” who initiates sexual contact in a couple, which to me shows that they probably wouldn’t mind ladies making the first dating move either.
Here’s how to work up the nerve.
Be casual, but directÂ
When it’s time for “the big ask,” the worst thing you can do is get all freaked out about the details. Walking over to my soon-to-be boyfriend that day, I almost had a heart attack. I think I blurted out something like, “Do you want to come over to my house sometime!” Thankfully, he just responded, “How about we make it coffee instead?” Keep it simple, but direct. A little smile along with, “Would you like to get together sometime?” will definitely send the message that yes, this is a date we’re talking about. If you’re on the shy side, keep it simple.  A brief walk over lunch or a quick drink will be enough to see if there’s chemistry. If not, you made a new friend or at least had a great convo.
Be fun
If you’re more on the adventurous side, go for an active outdoor activity like a hike, a bike ride, or a long city walk. Keeping things moving will help keep conversation moving.
Be prepared to pay
Okay, I know money is a sticky subject, but if you’re the one asking, you should be prepared to be the one paying. When the check comes, pull out your credit card and take care of it. Of course, if he insists, we can’t say there aren’t gonna be bonus points for him…
Be confident
Feel your prettiest when you’re asking a guy out by rocking your favorite lip shade or sexy jacket that day—or whatever makes you feel great.  Step it up when you’re on the date, too, in a comfortable, natural way.
Be free
Leave all talk about ex-boyfriends, relationship requirements and expectations at the door, sister! This is your time to get to know somebody, make it count! Suggested topics: Dream travel destinations, favorite concert tour of all time, the world’s best movie.
Remember, ladies, life is way too short to worry about what could have been.  Take a leap and ask your crush to lunch. Chances are, neither of you will remember who did the asking in the end.

4 Tips for Not Looking Your Age
By Christine Bibbo Herr
Age: A lady never tells! (I’ll say 30s) Occupation: Fashion, beauty, fitness stylist/expert and TV personality When I feel truly ageless: Doing yoga on the beach with friends
For some reason there seems to be this overarching thought that we need to “look age appropriate,” but what does that really mean?  I’m not so sure I’ll ever really feel or act my real age. I think age is just a number and it’s not something that we should get hung up on.
I recently attended a fashion event during NY fashion week. Everyone was so hung up on getting all glammed up in their highest heels and most popular designer dresses. But it happened to be a frigid, icy day in NYC and I wanted to wear what would make me feel my best. So, out came my chic high-tops, my sporty, sexy sequined leggings and a funky vintage fur jacket.
Sure enough, I had girls coming up to me all night complimenting my look and telling me that their feet were killing them and they wished they had their favorite sneakers on too. So I say go with your gut and what is true to you and your style and you can’t go wrong.
While how you feel in your own skin is the most important factor in how to not look your age, here are some other things to keep in mind.
Confidence is key
When it comes to rocking a new trend, post runway-model-age, it’s all about wearing it with your head held high and making it work for you. For example, mixing different prints and graphics in one outfit may sound crazy, but just take it one piece at a time. For example, let’s say you LOVE your legs… then play up bold patterns with a bright floral legging or jean and do a smaller more subtle print up top, or with an accent accessory like a bag or shoe. And voilà ! Just like that you’re looking catwalk-cool in a flash. If you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing you’ll always look (and feel) confident.
The right makeup changes everything
The right makeup can make all the difference when it comes to creating a fun and youthful look without overdoing it.  Wearing too much makeup or the wrong color or type of foundation can age us significantly.  Lately I’ve been loving the COVERGIRL + Olay Simply Ageless Foundation because it has great coverage but it’s also really lightweight so it never looks cakey.  And, since I’m all about outdoor adventures (surfing, running, snowboarding) I really don’t like to pile on the layers when it comes to foundation or any other makeup for that matter. It also has SPF in it to help protect my skin from the sun.
Don’t fear bright colors
Don’t freak out at the thought of rocking a bright hue. It’s so much easier than you might think. Color is the best way to add a pop of personality to any look, work or play. For example, if you’re dying to try a new hot pink hue this season, take baby steps and start with a hint of that color—either with a cami peeking out from a blouse or maybe a cute bright tunic top. Then add neutral pieces to the mix to keep it balanced.  And if you’re not ready to rock color in your wardrobe, another way to go would be playing with brights with a new nail color or a bold lip.
Experiment with new makeup looks at night before you wash off your makeup to test out fun new ways to wear color. Just a little bit of shadow in a fresh new shade or a bolder cheek stain can brighten your  face without overdoing it.
Invest in the right denim for you
I’m a denim girl for sure, and a firm believer that if you start with a great pair of jeans, it’s easy to build a youthful look that will make you feel great. Whether it’s a super soft skinny jegging or my patched up studded jean jacket, I’m a sucker for all washes—dark, light and every shade in between. And now with so many different textures, colors and cuts available, there’s really a fit and style for every personality and body type. I tend to lean towards the more worn-in funky options, but if you want something a little more polished you can easily choose a darker denim in a slim fit and pair that with heels and a chic blazer for a more tailored look. Or, to keep a clean crisp look for the weekend, you can simply pair a white tank or tee with cute sandals or flats and just add fun colorful accessories to create your own individual spin on basics. Denim is really a timeless classic that every woman should have in her wardrobe.
So remember, age is just a number, and one that you don't need to get hung up on! Â I choose to focus on a different number... the number of shoes in my closet!

5 Amazing Ways to Celebrate a Landmark Birthday
By Carolina Buia
Age: 39 Occupation: Journalist, writer, mother, foodie When I feel truly ageless: Swimming at the beach
Less than a month ago, my 39th birthday crept up on me like a whisper. I didn’t want any flowers, presents, Facebook pokes or memorializing. I was hoping no one would notice.
Since it coincided with my kids’ spring break, we went on a cruise to Cozumel. Of course, my husband couldn’t help himself. After a four-course meal, our waiter sprung up with a cake lit up like Times Square. It was a small celebratory moment at sea, but it was perfect. And yet, next year, I want it to be different.
“The big one is coming up,” I told my husband. “Gotta make it memorable.”
Memorable does not mean massive. I’m not looking to sign up for a booze cruise or have a herd of hellions crash my Florida pad. It’s an opportunity to be with those who have grown with me over the years.
So with the countdown clock set to one year, here are my top five ideas to celebrate a landmark birthday:
Dinner and dancing
There was a time when birthday evenings meant dancing until dawn at a trendy club surrounded by friends in short skirts and towering heels. This time around I’m going to start with an intimate, elegant dinner and follow it up with a popular night club. We’ll get there early, while there’s still room on the dance floor for me to unleash my 21-year-old moves, plus a few Latin steps picked up from my Zumba class.  Personal tip: Hide morning-after puffy eyes with the Covergirl + Olay The DePuffer.  After a night out dancing you may be tired, but no one has to know!
Shop smart
Upgrade your signature style with a shopping spree. I’ve lived in my skin for almost 40 years, I know what works. I’m petite and thin boned. My legs are my best asset. Svelte lines, tailored tops and shorter hemlines play to my strengths.
At this age, we need to own our personal style—and ditch anything that doesn’t work. Invest in classic pieces that make you feel ageless. You probably already own a little black dress, so bring some color into the closet. Vibrant hues—my personal favorite is emerald green—bring a youthful touch.  Splurge on a pair of designer heels in a hot pink or cobalt blue. Most of all, strut with authority.
Sun-kissed expedition
I live in Southern Florida where I feel like it’s not uncommon for me to get a suntan while driving, but I love it!  If I didn’t already live in a sun-filled locale, I would certainly be escaping to somewhere warm on my big day.
Plan a trip with a loved one or friends and create an itinerary filled with memorable activities. Pick a place you’ve never visited. I’m thinking St. Lucia. It can be an hour’s drive, a boat ride away or even require a passport. Just be sure to protect your skin from the sun.  I recommend using a foundation with SPF like the Covergirl + Olay Simply Ageless Foundation.
Give something new a try
As we get older, it’s easy to fall into a routine. Can you recall a time when you did something out of your comfort zone and ended up getting hooked?  That adrenaline rush that comes with exploring foreign territory is a youth serum! So try a daring activity (skydiving? bungee jumping? Why not!?), an exotic food (grilled octopus), and a bold make-up look (navy blue gel liner).  Open minds lead to unforgettable adventures.
Mind, body and soul
As I approach my fifth decade, I like to think I’ve developed a thicker emotional skin. It’s time to let go of fears, grudges, and pettiness. I’d like to sign up for a weekend yoga retreat sometime this year, and start meditating again—which studies show may help you live longer.  I also purchased a pilates machine and have committed myself to twice-weekly workouts, through pilatesology.com. Â
Keeping our mind, body and soul youthful is what sent Ponce de Leon on his Floridian expedition.  Sign up for a gym membership or a dance class, dust off your bike, attend a yoga retreat, or commit to a meditation practice for your 40th. Find your personal fountain of youth. Celebrating us isn’t just about a one-night fête, it’s about a decades long commitment.
While it’s still early to settle on all the details of my big 4-O bash next spring, it’s never too soon to start looking and feeling my best. A year from now I want to just feel my best as I dance the night away with loved ones, enjoy a few margaritas, blow out all 40 candles and eat the biggest piece of chocolate molten cake. Hey, at this age you let her eat cake!

5 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Dream Vacation
By Marnie Goldberg
Age: 42 Occupation: Beauty and lifestyle blogger, mom When I feel truly ageless: When I’m en route to my next destination Growing up, vacations meant a trip to Grandma’s house. When I got married, in my 20s, we went on a cruise to the Caribbean, but our budget wasn’t exactly four-star. Our cabin was right over the engine room and every night we “tried” to fall asleep to the not-so-gentle sounds of what sounded like army tanks rumbling directly under our bed.
It wasn’t until recently that the stars aligned and my husband and I were far enough along in our careers to be able to afford to travel. We set our sights on a trip to Scotland.
I’ve literally dreamed about Scotland since I was a teenager. I would lie in bed at night and picture what it would be like to actually stand in the ruins of an ancient castle. In my mind I could see myself standing in the fields of heather, or tramping across the moors wearing my rain boots, with a soaring soundtrack playing in my head.
And guess what? Reality definitely delivered. Â
Walking the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, climbing up the hill in Sterling to see the views from Sterling Castle, driving through the Great Glen to Inverness, sailing on Loch Ness (no Nessie sightings, unfortunately), having tea in the shadow of an abbey almost a thousand years old, and finally, finally, walking the moor of Culloden (any Outlander fans out there?)... Before I got there, Scotland was the stuff of movies and fantasy. Once I was there, the reality was even better.  “Dream vacations” can become real—if you seize the opportunity.
Finally getting to take your dream vacation is a big deal—here are some things I learned along the way that helped me get the most out of it:
It’s okay to be a tourist
There’s such a stigma around “acting like a tourist”, but let’s be real, that is what we are when we travel! I recommend booking a guided bus tour or walking tour on your first day in a foreign city.  It will help you learn the lay-of-the-land, see all of the “touristy spots” in an abbreviated way, and help you decide which places are worth re-visiting. Once you have a sense of where you are going, then you can focus on mingling with locals and exploring local haunts.
Drink water
It sounds obvious, but drinking water before, during, and after a trip is critical. Â Airplanes dry us out and the more dehydrated we get, the more tired we feel (and look!). Be sure to always have a refillable water bottle with you and keep it full. Â When traveling to a location that may not have potable drinking water, buy a case of bottled water at the beginning of your trip and keep it in your hotel room. Â Staying hydrated = happy vacation.
Take tech precautions
I can’t tell you how many times I have arrived to a hotel to find only one open outlet hidden behind hard-to-move furniture.  Pack extra batteries, a power strip and extension cord to charge all of your technology.  It’s not uncommon for us to use our phones or devices as our maps or travel guides, so it’s important to keep them from dying midday.
Pack the right beauty products
I personally like to travel with drugstore makeup, because if I lose it or it’s confiscated, I can easily replace it. Packing a good undereye concealer is a must.  My favorite under eye concealer at the moment is The Depuffer from COVERGIRL + Olay. It’s a lifesaver for a jetlagged traveler and has a soothing cool metal tip that feels great on puffy, tired eyes. Lip balm and foundation with SPF are also travel essentials.
Don’t be afraid to ask
Whether it’s for an upgrade in flight seating, a hotel room, or just for directions, you’ll miss out on all sorts of amazing opportunities if you don’t just ask for them.  Think of it this way - you’ll never see those people again, so don’t worry what they’ll think of you. Just ask!
Dream vacations to come
I recently turned 42, and I can honestly say that so far, this has been the best part of my life. My kids have grown up into people that I genuinely enjoy as traveling companions, my financial resources are in a very stable place that I did not have in my 20s, and I'm married to my best friend. While I don’t want to push my kids out of the house (my oldest is off to college in 2016), I do look forward to my next dream vacation—the one I finally get to take with JUST my husband! Getting older definitely has its advantages!
