“You’re acting like you’ve got to re-invent the wheel or something,” she replied. sure, she and luna had uttered the statement throw the whole man out before, but there had to be parts of his former self that zach still liked. or maybe the former zach was just as one dimensional as she judged him to be. “i don’t know how long that’ll last,” she replied as she glanced up from her phone. “it looks like your buddy over there posted on twitter that you’re touring with us.” she turned her phone to show him the post. comments were already trickling in from people who were concerned he’d send their whole city back to a different time. “what a spiteful dick,” she frowned. not only could he not take no for an answer, but he also outed zach’s location. their manager would be hearing about this shortly if he hadn’t already.

Zatanna had said something similar. He understood where they were coming from. They were all mostly good people. If they needed to fix something about themselves, it was probably minimal at best. “I wrapped myself up in a lot of bad qualities before. I’d say it’s more like trying to dig that wheel out of the dirt once it’s buried. It’ll take time and effort to separate the good from the bad.” He was still surprised though that Dusk, of all people, didn’t seem to think there’d be much to finding the good in him. Other than maybe sex, he didn’t think she saw much else to him considering how she and Luna always looked at him. He frowned, confused for a moment when Dusk said it wouldn’t last. He thought she just didn’t believe him untile she showed him her phone. “Great.” he grumbled, rubbing his hands through his hair. “He knew exactly what he was doing too.” He hadn’t wanted his presence to affect anything, but he did want to be there for Thorn. He couldn’t exactly back out. “Do you think that’s going to affect your concerts majorly?”

She looked at him sympathetically when he asked if she could even name one good thing about him. “well, for starters i can tell you feel remorseful for the hurt you’ve caused. it might not feel great to feel that way, but guilt is our way of correcting ourselves. generally speaking, all you’ve ever wanted to do was to entertain people and give them a good show. you’re not the kind of person to willfully use your powers for harm.” all the zataras ever really wanted was to make people forget how shit the world is while they were watching them perform. she nodded when he said he needed a few days. she hoped he wouldn’t turn into one of those hermit wizards from the movies. they always gave mages a bad rep. “you act like people let me forget,” she laughed. out of all of her exes, she figured nick necro would be the one that people would judge her for the most. or she figured it would be her almost relationship with bruce wayne. but no that road led to john constantine too.

He wasn’t sure if just feeling a certain way was actually a good quality, but he accepted it as a start. He was sure he was more selfish than Zatanna was implying. He had wanted to entertain people, sure, but it was mostly for his own benefit. He wanted the attention and to be liked, and eventually loved, but she was right that he never wanted to hurt anyone in that process. The main reason he so often made mistakes was because he didn’t consider the fact that hurting people was even a possibility. He finally smiled when she said people wouldn’t let her forget she dated John. “Well, at least we’re in the same boat of people not forgetting our mistakes.” He was pretty sure his mistakes were worse, but it was a close call with Constantine.

It stung a little to hear him say he thought she tolerated him at best. Sure, he was an idiot sometimes but even before they got transported to Salem, they’d been somewhat friends in her opinion. They’d even gone on a ghost hunt together. That was friendship, wasn’t it? “It is possible to be angry at someone and still care about them,” she pointed out. “I was upset with what happened, but that doesn’t mean I wanted you to be a human sacrifice. Do you still feel like I just tolerate you?” she asked. It wasn’t really the impression she was going for so if he still felt that way, she needed to adjust something. She didn’t argue that showbiz was a business of survival. They were both talented enough to make it in that world, but it didn’t mean they hadn’t had some of their own personal disasters. She hoped what she was about to show him wouldn’t be a total disaster. Unfortunately for her things didn’t go as planned. Zach was quick thinking though and managed to kick sand at the fire to put it out. Thorn sighed deeply and tried to relax in order to not restart it. “I’m okay. I just…I thought it would go away when I got home.” She thought this whole ability only appeared because of her trauma. So, it stood to reason at least in her head that it would go away when she was away from the trauma. “So far it’s the only thing I can do. I’m surprised I was even able to will it that time. It’s always random. Do you think it will go away?”

“You’re a nice person, Thorn.” She was one of the nicest people he knew actually. “I can’t imagine you’d actually wish harm on anyone, whether they were your friend or not.” Even the people in Salem he was pretty sure she just wanted them to leave them alone without harm coming to either side, but he also didn’t think she’d hurt that long if something like that had happened to him or even the people who’d put her on trial. At the time, he hadn’t really been doing that much thinking at all. “But no, I don’t, not now anyways. I don’t think you would’ve asked my cousin about me or tracked me down to my apartment and got me to come here with you if you just tolerated me.” He might’ve thought that before, but he didn’t now. “Sorry. It doesn’t really work like that. That power was always in you. It was just . . . locked until your emotions broke it open. That lock’s gone now. You’d either have to figure out how to work the door or find someone who can give you a new lock. Speaking from experience, Zatanna isn’t going to want to just block your power away completely, and without her or someone else just taking it away, it’s going to be there forever. It just won’t always be this hard to control.”

She looked at him suspiciously for a moment when he replied he wasn’t here for the spotlight. normally, zachary was an attention hog. she assumed that stemmed for his home life. no one thirsted after that much attention if they were actually getting it at home, but she didn’t really want to know the details. “so you’re part of the crew then. that’s an interesting job change. i’ve never known you to enjoy the behind the scenes work.” it was clear he was trying to keep a low profile here. did he think people weren’t going to show up to their shows because they were afraid he’d get them sent back to a different time period? she knew he was already on a watch list so even she doubted he had the gull to do that again.

He could tell that she wasn’t going to just trust him on his word, and that was fair. He hadn’t given her any reason to yet, but that didn’t mean he’d stop trying. “Yeah, that about sums it up.” It was an interesting change for him too, but that wasn’t the only change he was dealing with currently. Overall, it was probably one of the smaller changes. “Honestly, I don’t really know what works for me anymore, and that’s just part of figuring it out. It’s actually been pretty nice getting out of the spotlight.” Of course, he couldn’t avoid it entirely. Being who he was meant that even if he changed his career, people would still be watching him, whether it was fans, S.H.I.E.L.D., or people like Dusk who didn’t trust him.
