☾Kil just stared blankly at the stranger as she stepped back. When she leapt off the balcony, Kil cried out and lunged forward, afraid that she’d hurt herself, however she seemed to have landed without trouble and disappeared. That was honestly quite impressive, if not a little alarming, but Kil thought nothing of it. In fact, after a few minutes she wasn’t certain it had even happened as there was no evidence of it and the whole thing seemed rather absurd.☽ ☾She thought nothing of it until later that day when she heard the commotion of an attack. The fight had broken out so suddenly, the cries of guards and children alike erupting. Kil stood from her chair so suddenly it toppled over, spilling ink all over her desk as she knocked over a bottle but she hardly cared about that in the moment.☽
☾First she went running out of her office and spoke loudly over the din of children yelling and the general panic.☽
“Everyone stay calm! Get to the lower levels where Fatima is, he’ll know what to do!”
☾At least she hoped that absolute disaster of a human being remembered the instructions he’d been given in case they were ever attacked. The children were to all line up against the walls down in the basement, which would be blocked off. Unbeknownst to Fatima and the children, this would be used as a distraction so Maader could make her escape whilst the intruders were trying to get into the basement to find her.☽
☾She immediately began to look for Maader then. She found her coming out of her room just then, armed with a long knife she often kept with her.☽
“Lady Maader, we’re under attack we have to get you out of here!”
☾For once her mistress was cooperative, so Kil took her by the hand and the both of them went running to a window on the ground floor at the side of the building. Kil just barely managed to break the thing open without breaking the glass and stepped outside, but before she could help Maader out she turned and swallowed; she was surrounded by their enemies.☽
“What do you fiends want from us?”
☾She was hoping to stall time for Maader to make an escape, but Maader was just standing there, hiding just behind the wall to listen.☽
Almost immediately after Katza had launched herself out of the window and out into the courtyard, she wasted no time in quickly returning to the group. Panting softly and looking slightly distressed, but managed to calm down with a quick pat on the back by her teacher.
They’d managed to stay hidden until the time was right for them to attack, dropping down in through a window they broke. Taking their opponents by surprise, sending the entire place into chaos while yelling in their own language, drawing the attention of the member’s they came to rescue.
They’re rescues we’re thankfully minimal, with it only being two people. A scribe and a healer magician, both of which took the opportunity to split off from the group following Fatima and run towards their native languages yelling, ignoring the head slave.
Both of them knew what that yelling meant, it meant that Katza and company we’re there to save them, it was Granian tradition after all. Tradition that if you’re clans men were kidnapped or taken as slaves to go and retrieve them.
It was part of their plan to ambush the head of the whole company, take them down by their roots. Knowing that to reach them their comrades would have to get past her, the women who owned this hellhouse. So they’d corner her and demand she give them their friends back.
So when the group had them surrounded, Katza included, the unofficial head of the group and Katza’s teacher, Emelrich, that spoke up.
“We wan’t our companions back, we aren’t afraid to use force” his voice was heavy and deep, with a sense of power behind it. He had a voice that demanded respect, obedience, he was a man who didn’t stand misbehavior, despite the thick accent.
Katza’s hands were wrapped tightly around her bow, ready to fire at his command. She respected her teacher, not out of fear, but because he showed himself to be someone to be respected. He was rough around the edges, but he was a good man, although he’d never admit it.

☾All in all it seemed like it was going to be another normal day at the Mariadel company. That was to say, that it was going to be tedious, exhausting, and bring many challenges that Kil could take with relative ease but that built up over time to be the mountain of burdens that was the Mariadel Company. The sun had just started to rise and Kil was guzzling down some water to try and keep herself awake as it’d been another full night working to not fall behind. Despite that hearing the birds chirping from the windowsill was pleasant and she wasn’t entirely miserable in that moment.☽
☾That was, until she walked down the hall and saw a strange figure. She was taller than most, towering over Kil considerably, and she bore no collar. Kil knew everyone who worked at the Mariadel company, and she knew this girl wasn’t among them. She hardly looked like a customer either; their clients were mostly aristocrats and merchants and she looked nothing like either of those. Eyes narrowing, she stared down the stranger without a hint of fear in her demeanor.☽
“Who are you and what is your business here?”
Katza had been given permission by her teacher to roam freely at night as long as she regrouped by sunrise, knowing she’d be relatively safe navigating the darkness. A skill she’d acquired through her hunting, and even though the whole atmosphere of the place depressed her, it was strangely beautiful when it was pitch black and every soul was asleep.
Well, every soul but one.
She was almost as taken aback as Kil was when the two of them both realized they weren’t the only one in the hallway, even if she’d justified her little adventure as scouting out the area for their attack later in the day. She nearly jumped when the other girl spoke, quickly flinching into a protective stance. She’d left her bow with the others, having nothing but a short dagger to protect herself.
Gulping she began to step back, slowly, quickly realizing that the girl was unarmed. Not only because of her adeptness to the dark, but because beams of light began streaming in through the pillars showing her appearance. Tall, stocky, blonde, and Granian. Anyone who’d dealt in slaves had to have heard of the Granians, they were people who would stop at almost nothing to get their members who had been sold into slavery.
Panicking Katza quickly turned on her heal, stepped onto the balcony, and jumped into the shrubbery below before disappearing.

A branch crunched beneath Katza’s feet as she and the others walked, they’d been at this for nearly a month. Endless walking for days, avoiding people and towns until they had to, than bribing a man for his boat with their hair. And to think all this was because Reim had an infatuation with slaves, something that the tribes of Grania didn’t have for the most part.
A few weeks prior to their journey, some of their village members had been captured in the attack on the Remainian border. And despite being hunters by trade Katza, her teacher, and his hunting group had all been sent out to retrieve them. Upon loosing their tribes men, the other warriors had kidnapped a member of the Reimanian border patrol and made him confess as to where they were going, and so Katza and company had set out to go all the way to the Madrial Company in the south.
By either pure luck or divine protection, they’d managed to make it onto the island the slave company was located on, as well as quickly beginning to sneak their way through and around the main building.
Despite both the purpose of the journey and how long it was taking, Katza had been enjoying it up to this point. She’d gotten the opportunity to travel farther than she’d ever had in her life. She’d gotten to see the ocean, and yet Reim still wasn’t perfect, far from it in fact.
❝I’m half sick of shadows | I want to see the sky | Everyone else can watch as the sun goes down | So why can’t I?❞
