Caleb. Are you busy?
Whatever it is, can it wait? I’ve got a meeting in about fifteen minu- Yue. [Caleb stops walking as quickly as his normal pace took him, turning to face her while she fell into step with him] Um, yeah okay. I’ve got fifteen minutes, what’s going on?
If you're too busy we can talk later... (she begins, given his initial comment. But then, when he sees it was her, he seemed more willing to listen). Okay. I uh- I'm not sure how to say this (she begins, walking by his side. He only had a limited amount of time for her right now and she didn't want to waste it. Best to just say it) Did you see what happened to the participants in the last Project Play? How they started seeing these kind of 'projections'... it seemed as if they were moments of their lives, but they hadn't happened (she says those last words in a lower tone, fearing he would think she was crazy or something if she went on. But this was Caleb, she was sure she could trust him with this). It happened to me too. While sleeping. They weren't normal dreams, I'm sure of it... They were something different... and I don't know what they are, or why they're happening, Caleb (she says with a mild edge of fear to her voice. What she'd seen was enough to make anyone feel afraid).
Caleb. Are you busy?
(she calls out as she sees him in the hallway. She hadn't seen him a lot lately, most likely due to his promotion. Catching up to him, Yue walks by his side). I was hoping there's something I could talk about with you (she says with a bit of a low tone. She knew he was a busy man, especially now that he was a board member, but he was the only person she trusted enough to talk about this particular topic).
It was a good match.
[Sam nods once and takes a stance just with his fists. His sense recommends him to take a weapon, maybe a rod like Yue. But he prefers it without an arm right now. Taking a deep breath, he imagines clicking a switch on inside him, an image training he has been doing to control the sense. With that simple image, not only his muscle and his respiratory system but his mindset shifts and adjusts to single object. He moves before Yue, closing in to her right side inside the area of activity of her rod. He strikes with the elbow then snaps up the fist, striking twice. Then he spins, throwing a low kick at her calf with his shinbone.]
Just with you bare hands? (she asks, raising her eyebrows lightly. Not everyone dared to challenge her to combat unarmed, but then again, not everyone had the power Sam had. The two stand in silence, completely motionless, for a little while. Yue was silently hoping he would begin, even having him move first gave her an initial sample of how to read him, how to use her power to analyze as much as possible and understand him. Sam's first hit is successful, but Yue manages to twirl around before his fist could make contact with her body again. She uses the rod to deviate the kick he threw, liftling it from beneath his leg to make him lose balance. She doesn't waste the momentum of the rod, making it turn in her hands and using it to launch a horizontal hit with full speed, aiming to his torso).
Can I come in?
Huh? Oh Yue, yeah you can come in. [Caleb looks up from his desk where he’d been sorting old papers, giving her a small smile] Pretty weird though huh? On the council…just never expected it. But Hearst trusts me, so it counts for something. [Mostly he’d taken the promotion for his parent’s sake. A part of him still wanted to believe in the institution, and it wanted so badly for Hearst to be in the right. But he knew that wasn’t the truth] How have you been?
(She gives him a soft smile before she walks to stand in front of his desk, looking over at the papers he'd been sorting, and some of the boxes in the office) It does, it's a good thing. I bet your mom and dad are really proud of you (she says genuinely, even if the two of them had been having doubts and worries about the system and Hearst's role) I'm proud of you too (she adds by the end, because as his friend, partner, confidant, whatever she was to him, she was glad he was given this new position). It's going to be weird not seeing you here anymore. I'm going to miss it. I think we all will (she absentmindedly runs a finger over the woodend desk, before she looks down at the things he still had there) Do you want some help? (she looks up at him when she speaks). I've been alright. Just a bit worried about what happened at Project Play and out in town as well.
Can I come in?
(she asks as she stands by the door of Caleb's office. He'd left it ajar, so she just a step in and waited by the door, returning it to its semi-closed state). I heard you got promoted. Congratulations (she says with a smile, because it was a good thing Caleb had gotten some recognition from all his work and dedication).
It was a good match.
[Sam has been avoiding any sparring because of his recent changes in combat style— more forward and asserting than before— But he also has been trying to contain that aggressiveness. And Sam only stepped forward because he knew Yue Kaoru is one of the best in combat. It might be a good chance to find out how much he has improved.] Can I step in? [He asks politely. Then at her question, he nods rather curtly.] Yeah, I’m sure.
(The instant Sam walks into the combat area, she begins to study and analyze him, something her power always did without her having to consciously do so). Of course. You don't need my permission (she replies politely but with a cold edge to her voice, as she spoke to most people she didn't know well). Good (she replies and takes her stance. Her Intuitive Aptitude alllows her to see and understand the bilogical system that Sam Spencer was, but through this combat she'd only gain more knowledge about him, his strengths and his weaknesses. She'd already understood Lea Dunham's power to perfection, to the point where she'd been able to copy it. Sam's Danger Intuition was a handy skill, perhaps with enough analyze and underrstanding out it, she'd be able to reproduce it in herself).
It was a good match.
(she says to her opponent as he gets up, groaning because of his sore muscles. As always, Yue bows her head lightly, a sign of respect towards the person she'd trained with. The guy had taken quite a beating, but he'd given her a decent enough fight. Not much of a challenge, but decent nonetheless. She turns around, ready to leave the comabat area when she hears someone else step in. She raises her eyebrows lightly to face her new opponent) Are you sure about this? (she asks, not necessarily as a mean of discouragement, but as a fair warning).
This wasn’t suppose to be complicated, I mean it isn’t really if you take out the fact that you’re a student and I’m an instructor…it would actually be perfect if you took that out of the mix. [He smiles lightly, chuckling to himself for a minute before he rubs the back of his head and the laughter dies down. This wasn’t how he wanted things to turn out…messy. He liked Yue. He liked her a lot. But at what cost would he do this?] Exactly. They’re two different things with two different outcomes. I think…we should sit on this. There’s nothing to decide yet and there’s nothing wrong with being friends right? I can sort out the other stuff, I want this to mean something, you know? It’s important.
You're right (she smiles softly at his words. He was right. The whole thing would be perfect if the teacher-student thing was out of the mix because they were just these two very compatible people) But we can't take that out of the mix (she says as her smile begins to fade, because it was the truth. Unfortunately for them, the teacher-student thing would continue to be an issue until she graduated in two years or until he stopped being a teacher). Something tells me we'd be screwed with one of those outcomes (she manages to say with a somewhat humorous tone. It was the dangerous route and also the most tempting of the two. She nods at his words and gives him a soft smile) I uh- I would like for it to mean something as well (Whatever they had already meant the world to her, so if they ever went past it on to something more, she wanted it to feel as good -or better- as this did).
No, I don’t. [The first thing he’d told himself when he walked to her room was that he’d tell her it would be best if they stayed distant, still partners in combat but nothing more. As soon as he’d seen her, stepped into her room though…that sort of just changed. Exhaling lightly, he runs a hand through his hair, shaking his head] I don’t…Yue I don’t know. I still haven’t mentioned a thing about my views to my parents, I don’t know where this is taking me and now this…I just don’t know. How…how do you feel we should handle this? And not what you think we should do but…what you want to do?
(Yue doesn't say anything for a moment. What the hell could she say now? Knowing that Caleb didn't regret kissing her changed things... It wasn't a one-sided thing, and she couldn't help but think that if they both wanted it they should go for it. She just looks at him in silence, her eyes fixated on his. She lets out a breath and looks down as he speaks, not moving from her spot, still leaning against the door) The last thing I want is to be another complication in your life, Caleb. You got enough to deal with as it is... (she speaks softly, but with some confidence as well. She appreciated him enough not to want to make his life a bigger whirlwind than it was at the moment). What I think we should do and what I want to do are completely opposite things (she finally looks up again, saying those words in a somewhat low tone. Wasn't it obvious? What they should do was go back to how things were, what she was wanted was... well, him).
I’m a professor, Yue- [He sighs lightly, cutting himself off as a hand runs over his face. How the hell did he go about this? Where did they go from here? Caleb wished he had the answers, but he didn’t. He didn’t have answers for a damn thing] That being said, I didn’t exactly give you any reason that I wouldn’t be alright with that. It wasn’t just you who kissed me, I- I also, kissed you. [He had also kissed her, therefore Yue was not the only one at fault here. They had this…it was just so easy to talk with her. Everything about it just felt right. So maybe that in itself was okay. He liked her. He really did] And I don’t regret it.
(When he starts talking she could already imagine what he was going to tell her... and then it changes. She looks at him incredulously for a moment, not quite believing he'd actually said it. Sure they were compatible in many ways, but she'd imagined his position was a teacher and his morals would take priority, that he would draw a line between what their relationship could be and what couldn't. Instead he was kind of blurring that line by admitting the things he had) You... don't? (He said he didn't regret it... That wasn't something she'd expected at all). What are we going to do about this, Caleb? (she asks softly, rolling her lips for a moment. She knew what she wanted to do about it, but that wasn't necessarily compatible with what they should do...)
Hey. [Stuffing his hands into his pockets, he looks around before nodding to her bedroom] Can I come in for a minute? I think we should talk. [After what had happened between them, they’d become distant. Caleb was confused as all hell and after talking with Anna he felt even more so. Did he really want to risk everything and be with Yue? What the hell was this? He shuts the door behind him, standing there for a moment before he meets her gaze] So…about what happened…
Sure (she replies with a light nod before pushing the door open. Once inside, she steps to the side to let him in. They definitely needed to talk, but after what she'd done... Yue had no idea where this conversation would go. Once she closes the door, she leans her back against it and looks at him with a composed expression. She'd fucked up their friendship really bad, hadn't she? Everything about kissing him had felt right, but the action itself hadn't been, she knew that now. He was a professor at St. Mary's and she was his student, they could be partners and friends, but they couldn't be more than that...) Yes, about that... I'm sorry, Caleb. It was completely out of line for me to do that.
(Things had been weird between her and Caleb since she kissed him. They just saw each other in class and that was it, they didn't even train together anymore... That was all mostly because of her fault, she'd been the one who had become more distant. But how could she not? She'd stepped over a line she shouldn't have and with that kiss she'd single-handedly ruined the most meaningful relationship she had... She was about to open the door to her room when she heard a familiar voice behind her. She freezes for a second, before she turns to look). Caleb. Uh-... Hi.
[For a moment Caleb just stands there, looking slightly shocked but all together confused after he’d been kissed. A part of him had wanted it yes, that’s why he kissed her back. But this kind of relationship…it couldn’t happen. He’d seen a little of what it had done to Tillstrom and Ellington and he wasn’t about to ruin himself and Yue over a secret relationship going on between them. So instead of saying what he wants to, instead of….just….kissing, her again he shakes his head and sighs before he turns away] There’s no but’s to this situation, Yue. Even if….if you liked it and I did, we can’t do this. I’m not ruining what we’ve got over feelings we may or may not think we have. Don’t you realize what this could do? Us running around keeping this relationship hidden, it’ll ruin us. And I can’t….I can’t do that to my parents. They don’t even know about my doubts, much less about my feelings for- [He cuts himself off, looking up a picture frame sitting on his coffee table of his mother and father. A hand runs through his hair as he shakes his head, ashamed of what he wanted and angry with what he couldn’t have] I think…we should continue on as friends. This can’t happen, alright? It can’t.
(The silence had suddenly turned uncomfortable. It had never felt like that for them before, they could be in each other's presence and not say a single thing for a long period of time and it never felt the way it was feeling now... Yue couldn't help but think this was her fault, that she'd provoked this by being so forward and kiss Caleb). No, you're right (she says with a nod. It could definitely ruin them, and even if it hurt that he was pushing her and what she felt away, it was the best thing to do in this situation. Caleb had much more to lose, after all, so he was doing the smart thing. The moral thing, too). Sure. Just friends (she manages a light smile, wishing she had never kissed him. She'd loved every second of being held by him as their lips met, but it had only made things complicated and he was making it very clear that he didn't want that sort of complications in his life. She shouldn't want that either, even if she... well, she wanted him). Well, I think that pretty much clarifies what needed to be clarified, So... I'll see you tomorrow in class (she says with a light nod, turning around to head to the door).
Yes, now is a good as time as any to talk. [Caleb agrees, nodding lightly as he brings the cup to his lips, taking a long sip before setting it down on the coffee table beside his legs. His mouth had surprisingly felt dry just now as the blood coursing through his veins at a faster pace than normal, his heart beating quicker, trying to keep up with the rest of him. Why did she make him feel this way? Why now? Caleb in his whole life had never felt as flustered and as uncertain with something as he did with his relationship with Yue. Part of him felt this entire relationship they had going on was wrong, another part just didn’t seem to care. She catches him off guard when she steps closer to him, and for a moment his breathing stops entirely] Yue- [It was all he managed to get out before her lips were on his and for some fucking reason, his arms responded by wrapping around her waist and pulling her closer. Something went off in him and shut the rest of himself down, the instructor part of him, the moral side of Caleb shut down. The feelings he had for Yue drove him to do it, to kiss her back and even to continue to kiss her as one of his hands moves to the back of her neck. Finally, finally, he pulls away from her, needing a breath of air. That’s when he finally looks at her, wide eyed and slightly afraid. He steps back, dropping his hands as he begins to pace, running a hand through his hair] You’re my student, Yue, you can’t- you can’t do that with your instructor.
So... (she starts, raising her eyebrows slightly at him to see if he'd go first. He'd been the one to say they would talk about this, whatever this thing was between them, he'd said it after that embrace and after leaving her wondering exactly at what point she started to fall for him. But then again how could she not start to fall for a man like him? He was her teacher, yes, but he hadn't always been that. What he'd always been since they met was her friend, her partner, that one person she trusted above anyone else. Kissing Caleb, even if just for a brief moment, had been a so surreal and gloriously amazing. The rush of blood through her body that gave her a warm sensation in her chest was unlike anything she'd ever felt as she did in that instant that their lips had met. He even kissed her back, he held her close, and that wasn't even something she thought Caleb would do. He also wanted it...). Sorry, I- I shouldn't have... (she trails off, rolling her lips for a moment. Kissing Caleb was supposed to be a mistake, but why didn't it feel like one?). I know... I know that's supposed to be wrong, but- ('but it doesn't feel wrong' she thinks to herself. She knew Caleb and his morals too well, surely the fact that she'd kissed him wouldn't sit too well with that for him...) I'm sorry (she says again, feeling an amount of guilt for putting him in the middle of a dilemma regarding his moral code. The last thing she wanted was to disrupt that for him).
Yeah, I’m coming one second! [Caleb called from his living room area, newspaper in hand and a cup of coffee in the other. Setting the paper down but keeping the coffee in his hand, he goes to the door and is surprised to find Yue on the other side. Half of him did expect it, especially with the way he’d left things the previous day. Looking around her, he makes sure no one is earshot and opens his door wider] Come in. You probably wanna talk. [He turns back around towards her once their inside and he’s locked the door, his hands still on the mug]
(She hears Caleb's voice from the inside and waits, feeling somewhat nervous but managing to stay composed just fine. They would talk, and they would settle whatever it was that needed to be settled between them, so it would all be alright. No need to nervous about that, she told herself). Yes. Well, you said we'd talk, so I figured maybe now could be a good time to do that (she tells him once she finds herself inside his room. It was odd, she had never been here, yet the place felt strangely familiar. Maybe it was because it was his place, so she felt comfortable in there. She looks at him, just standing a couple of feet away from him, and the memory of the other day came rushing back to her. How he stood up for her, his hand in hers when they walked back to St. Mary's, the hug, the moment he lingered as he pulled away and their faces were just an inch away from each other. She doesn't think about it and just goes for it, just as she'd done to take his hand, she closes the distance between them and presses her lips to his. The kiss doesn't last long, she pulls away almost as quickly as the impulse to kiss him drove her forward. Just like he'd done with the hug, she lingers, staying close to him after parting her lips from his. 'What the hell did you just do?' she thinks, fearful that now Caleb would kick her out or something, that maybe he wouldn't want to have anything else to do with her because students and professors shouldn't get involved like this).
