For every per-person search for the term “3.11” at Yahoo Japan between 00:00 and 11:59 JST on March 3, the company will make a donation to Tohoku Earthquake relief. Four years ago one of the worst single disasters of our still-young 21st century happened less than 70 years after the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and less than 30 years after Chernobyl. The country I call home was devastated. Natural and man-made factors combined, the central area in the Tohoku region of Japan will take centuries to recover. We can only hope that from the continuing aftermath – still, 4 years later as Fukushima’s reactor remains unstable and poorly policed – humanity will re-think its dependency on atomic energy and not forget.
