fun Fruits Basket story -

when the English TokyoPop translators for the manga were doing their job and translating, they did not know the story ahead of time in any form, so they were reading it as they translated each installment at the pace they were coming out in North America. so this means they had no idea about Akito’s gender until the story revealed it in vol. 17. well, in Japanese, Akito is never actually referred to by a gendered pronoun. cause the Japanese language can do that. so early on, when Akito was mentioned, they guessed from context that Akito was a guy. and later on they felt they had guessed correctly.

so when they were translating volume 17, when Akito’s female identity is revealed, well … Takaya writes it in a sneaky way. before the full page of Akito’s body is shown, and before Kureno clarifies what he is saying, Kureno just says “for the sake of that … poor girl” and it is meant to be a shocking twist!

well, the translators got to that line, and they just stopped. they didn’t turn the page to the drawing of Akito’s body or the further explanation. they stopped translating and preceded to have a 5 minute freak out, thinking that all this time, Akito has been a woman, and everyone in the story knew this, and they had been translating the whole damn series wrong. after they finally calmed down enough to turn the page they realized what was going on, but not before they thought they’d fucked up the whole official English translation of the series.

- this story comes from the blog on translating the the twin sister who translated Fruits Basket ran back some several years. that blog since appears to have disappeared off the internet to my great dismay. but I still remember a lot of their stories about Furuba from it.
