I'm the same age as Ilya. I'm Russian-speaking and lived in Russia until I was 26. I'm 34 now. My husband is a year younger, speaks Russian like me, but has lived in Estonia his whole life—we had slightly different experiences in our teens and twenties, but culturally, we grew up pretty similarly.
And we both agree that NO ONE Russian-speaking our age, our generation, drinks vodka. In Russia, it was only common among our parents' generation. And everyone born in the early 90s drank either beer, gin, whiskey, or cocktails in their early twenties.
Another thing I don't understand... is how apartment interiors are shown in Russia. You know those apartments where Ilya's family lives in the series? They look exactly like they would have looked in Stalin's time, or at the latest in the early 50s! I know that in the show, Ilya's father is a decorated colonel (my father was too, by the way), but... that doesn't mean people would prefer to live in a house with heavy velvet curtains and ugly lamps! Yes, Russia is full of houses with ugly or outdated interiors, but those are inhabited by very poor or very old people.
I also know people said that any Russian fuckboy would definitely wear Adidas pants and flip-flops at home, but I don’t agree, not Ilya's generation, maybe someone born in the early 80s, yes, but not Ilya, that's for sure.
I know Russian fuckboys, I used to hang out at their houses – they would wear black opium Tom Ford perfume, expensive Supremebeing T-shirts, and fitted jeans. This has been bothering me for weeks. That's it.
