Novel Review - Yan Gui (艳鬼) by Gong Zi Huan Xi (公子欢喜)
Warning: Spoiler
There are very few stories in the fiction world that can move my heart like Yan Gui. Anyone who has talked to me before about novels probably has already heard me going on and on about this novel and that is because it has a special place in my heart. I read Yan Gui the first time 10 years ago and it still haunts me in a subtle way that no other novel has been able to. Like the characters in Yan Gui, perhaps my heart has also been haunted by a love so sorrowful. I don't know where else to vent my thoughts so I am back on Tumblr for this one! There are relationships that just turn you into someone else. They push you too far away from where your nature truly lies. But for that person, you keep taking one step after another into that impenetrable hopelessness knowing your sacrifice will never bear fruit. Yan Gui is about such love. 艳鬼 means "Alluring Demon" and this is also our main character - Sang Mo. Sang Mo had lived over 300 years as a demon atoning for his sins and making up for the past which already turned into dust and a few pages of history. Everyone had forgotten Sang Mo and the old Chu dynasty but he wouldn't let himself forget. The lord of the Underworld - Kong Hua made a surprise visit and from this moment, we get to learn about their past lives as humans - never separated even after death. From the beginning, they only had each other through the worst parts but they couldn't enjoy the wealth and power together. Sang Mo only had Kong Hua but Kong Hua, as the fourth prince of the Chu dynasty - Chu Zeyun, grew up and loved another person. Chu Zenyun committed one crime after another to gain power within the palace and Sang Mo was willing to become his right-hand man. Eventually, Sang Mo was pushed to risk his own life on a trip to save the person Chu Zenyun loved. For all his devotion, his lover said to him in bed: "Sang Mo, why cannot you be him?". From Sang Mo's perspective, the prince's heart was colder than the snow that buried him in his last breaths. I wonder what he would think if he had known that there was a regretful prince that awaited his return. Sang Mo was no longer - Chu Zenyun committed suicide.
Now as Kong Hua, he was desperate to make up for the past. This makes me teary every time because I could almost feel the weariness in Sang Mo's heart. On this earth we roam, is there such a way to amend for the wound cut that deep? But Sang Mo did it, he resented Kong Hua but he also loved him too much to accept a reincarnation offer. In the end, they have eternity to make up for the past but one could still sense a lingering pain in Sang Mo. I wonder if time could really heal all.
My heart broke for both of them, for Sang Mo more of course but also for the foolish prince. Yan Gui is one of the first danmei novels I read and I have never been able to forget it. The plot of the book faded over the course of ten years like the history of the Chu dynasty but the haunting pain remains always somewhere in my chest. Maybe I relate to the story in ways that I don't even realize now. Perhaps, it's the weariness of the human emotions and the fatigue for romance. Or perhaps, it's jealousy that my heart cannot be that forgiving because truth is we don't have eternity and wounds may heal but scars could be permanent.

OMG, it's so exciting!! Also, it's going yo be awesome, I can feel it! And I'm in love with her note, when she said she will write what she wants and haters are welcome not to read 😆😆 She remains an inspiration!
It is indeed very sad that her ideas got censored before the chapters even get published. I haven't gotten around to read the latest chapters yet but the reaction has been amazing so far so I am exciting!
