chinese language learners ! so someone ik works on this language exchange platform tokimonki (for chinese / english language exchange) and word rn is there has been an influx of chinese native speakers who want to learn english, but this means an imbalance and there are not enough english speakers who are trying to learn mandarin chinese - so pspsps apparently now is a good time to join for chinese learners, there is like a free trial or smth, if you are looking for this type of method to practice spoken chinese. the platform has pre-prepped materials to help you avoid awkward convos, but there is sorta a pre-req requirement that you need to have a certain intermediate-ish level of chinese first to do exchange seshs. anyway just putting it out there since ik a lot of language exchange usually has too many english first language speakers and not the other way around , hope this reaches the right people

I know we, and Changyu, especially, have been peeling back the layers in Xie Zheng's personality well before this scene. From the glimpses she sees of the real him, the little slip ups or casual mention of violence or even his disdain for people in power, she knows there's more to him beneath his cavalier gebtleman persona. But in her heart of hearts, she still thinks of him as a delicate princess locked in an ivory tower. One whom she rescued from a snowy death and for whom she is responsible for. She feels protective of him even while knowing he can hold his own. But this is perhaps the first time she truly sees his real face behind the mask and it. is. fucking. terrifying.
This is the first time he's showed her, in the most visceral way imaginable, the depth of his feelings for her. He's jealous, angry, and lashing out! He can't believe that she would be so accepting of their separation, doubting whether he even means anything to her. And so, like an idiot, his jealousy pushes him to the edge when he forces a kiss on her, trying to imprint himself to her memory.
The way he callously wipes his lips off blood after she slaps him. And his look of disdain?? That arrogance of wounded pride of a thwarted lover?? She has never seen this side of him! This is the same man who felt too shy and flustered to look at her naked ankles. To see him here, now, it's like looking at a stranger. The look of hurt, confusion, and betrayal says it all. In that minute, she doesn't recognize her lover.
Changyu hasn't been the best judge of character. She trusted a man for 10 years, and he betrayed her in the worst way possible. So her hurt and confusion are understandable. Had it been under different circumstances, Xie Zheng would have probably handled this better. But boy has decided to put his foot in it and be a possessive idiot and kiss away her doubts, and it's no wonder that shit doesn't work!
This scene is so layered, and it shows them at their most vulnerable with each other, second-guessing everything and feeling hurt over the other's actions. It pierces through the paper window of their relationship, laying out feelings that they were both dancing around while playing house prior to this. It's the perfect segue into the next arc when Xie Zheng "conscripts" into the army and leaves their town. It is one of my favourite scenes from the novel. And I genuinely can't believe they pulled it off to perfection!!! I'm crying!! 😭😭
Born in a brothel, growing up doing hard labor in prison, collecting debts in gambling houses to make a living—he had never complained about any of it, never felt that heaven was unfair.
But in this moment, he thought, why was he illiterate?
She had told him her name, yet he didn't know it.
The distance between them was as vast as that between clouds and mud.
She’s a princess so normally I’d say it’s true but you look like this and are played by Zhang Linghelen of Troy so:
