In 1988, Midori Ito skated a program at the Olympics to traditional-style Japanese music, including a step sequence set to a section of music consisting mostly of drum beats. Thirty years later, Yuzuru Hanyu skated a program at the Olympics to traditional-style Japanese music, including a step sequence set to a section of music consisting mostly of jump beats.

Both of them have also included in their programs rippon’d jumps, back counter entrances to axels, and - although Midori wouldn’t bring hers to competition until the next year - famously good 3As.

I have no idea if Yuzuru has ever cited Midori as any kind of inspiration - as far as I know, these are likely pure coincidences - but either way, these are two of my favorite programs, and both are well worth a watch or few.

By the way, for fun, I plugged the frame length of Midori’s 2A here (with her hands on her hips!) in slow-mo into that frame-to-jump-height formula someone came up with and got around 72cm ±2cm…. which if true, would give her about the same insane height as Yuzuru’s 3A at Worlds 2019 and is well above any modern women’s jumps, if also assuming the Ice Scope data is accurate. She is short but mighty!
