Under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
Guy who’s only seen Evangelion watching his second Thing: Wow getting a lot of Evangelion vibes from this.
I want to rewatch this with subtitles when I can, the dialogue from the speakers can be hard to decipher, especially towards the end. I felt myself coming in and out of the movie a lot, mostly in the beginning because a lot of the lines are a bit clunky and feel sort of ad lib-ish(?), but it’s less of an issue as it goes on.
What I mostly wanted to see from this was the effects and they didn’t disappoint! There’s some really sick visuals, particularly of Simon being baptized/reborn in blood. The fate of destruction is also the joy of rebirth!!!
My personal interpretation is probably the most standard: Everyone got legitimately raptured and Simon is in Hell seeking redemption. I’m not big into lore and the specific theories so I’m glad this movie, while expanding the story, kept the mystery where it was important.

“By juicing the fruits, you lose all the fibers, and that's what your body wants. That's the important part. Otherwise, it's just all sugar, Theodore.”
“Or maybe he just likes the way it tastes and if it gives him pleasure, that's good for his body, too.” I think about this movie a fair amount, I’m glad I’ve come around to it on a rewatch.
It’s difficult to get out of the 2026 headspace while watching this movie. This is a movie that I really have to take a step back to think about. There’s a reactionary part of me that’s so annoyed by everything Theodore does. It’s easy to not like him when you’re watching him make the same mistakes you see everyone else in the real world making right now.
Am I mad with Spike Jonze for predicting the future so accurately? Jonze has an empathy for Theodore that I want to have. Empathy for people whose loneliness has been preyed upon by big tech companies. I want to be more like that, I think.

“The mule doesn’t like to plow, but it sure does like the tasty carrots. Watch Olson. He doesn’t quite know it yet, but he’s lost his appetite for the carrot.”
Such a good movie about what it takes to enact change: Community (Peter) and radicalization (Raymond).
