A Dark History

You're forbidden fruit - poisonous, always ever so slightly out of reach, and undeniably tantalizing. You venture the halls as a ghost silently rejoicing as whispers tickle at your ears, the curiosity of those around you piqued but the venom in your smile keeping them far from you. Though you are young, but your experience is vast. It wasn't difficult to utilize your family connections to venture forth into the world and discover it's treasures. Dark, hidden treasures usually buried well within the depths of ancient tombs and pyramids. Compelled to learn, and perhaps someday create, you've learned as much as you can of dark magic. They lengths you will go to for the sake of creating history is boundless. If these walls could talk - they'd tremble.

How was it possible that she had never noticed just how pretty she was before? Beyond just the spray of her dark hair across the paleness of a pillow or a wit that was able to go toe to toe with her own. From the corner of her eye she glanced over at the other girl only to find her looking already, “I love it when I catch you looking at me”

There was no doubt that the other girl could teach her quite a bit, about a lot of things. Though she couldn’t help but wonder why she would do such a thing. Surely she would expect something in return, Hestia was well aware of the fact that nothing just happened for free. “Hmm?” She hummed curiously, making it seem like she was still considering even though she’d already made up her mind. Though her decision could change based on whatever Zaccaria said. “And why would you do that? What do you want out of it.” Asking directly was the best thing to do rather than beating around the bush. There was no point for false pretenses or pretending like she believed the other girl would help her out of the kindness of her heart. 

Zaccaria ran a finger along the spine of the now closed book in contemplation of the girl’s question. Usually she’d revel at another falling into the trap of curiosity that she had laid, but she felt she might have a bit more work with this one. That she could play with her a little bit more. “Nothing” she finally conceded, “For now. Just remember that someday you’ll owe me a favor”

“Why should I care what other people think?” She snapped, quite sick of people seeming to believe that she cared what other people thought. “If someone wants to think me suspicious, let them. It’s not going to stop me from acting how I want to.” Hestia did what she wanted, with very little regard as to how others would respond. If she worried about others than she would get nothing done. She didn’t even allow what Amara or her sister thought effect how she acted. If either of them were bothered by how she acted or particularly cared, then they did not have to be around her. She already knew that somebody was obviously keeping an eye on what she did, worrying about who it was would just drive her crazy. 

Zaccaria’s brow quirked upwards, a smile lighting her face as she looked on at the girl. She had definitely judged a bit too soon. This attitude was actually rather impressive. “You know” she said, wrapping her arms herself and glancing upwards as if thinking, “If you were really interested I could teach you way more than you would be able to learn from that little book. Or anything in here really”. For her, reading this books was just a brush up on facts that she already knew or could easily obtain through exposure to the things in her family’s shop. It was almost like having her own access to the restricted section and everyone knew that was where all of the interesting stuff was kept.

Ji-Min rolled her eyes but didn’t comment further; if Zaccaria was going to be ridiculous, she wouldn’t encourage it. “You’ll never be missed in History of Magic,” she said dismissively, trying to determine if she could get away with skipping her own classes to get in a nap. Probably not, and she had never liked skipping class anyway, even History of Magic. Ari’s plan was logical and Ji-Min couldn’t argue with it, but she found herself a little reluctant to leave now. She couldn’t admit to that, of course; it would seem like she had developed feelings and she knew very well how Ari would react to that. And it wouldn’t be true anyway. Still, Ji-Min lingered a bit at the door. “Would you like me to bring you back some breakfast? I can usually sweet talk the house elves in the kitchen and it would prevent you from making another stop.”

“You would do that?” Zaccaria asked, moving back towards the bed. If she was going to be here for awhile then she might as well get comfortable. The plan while she waited for there to be a big enough gap between Ji-Min leaving and leaving herself was to try to either take a nap or see if she could get the room to provide some books or something. When Ji-Min brought it up she realized just how hungry she was. She perched on the edge of the bed again and removed the shoes that she had just put back on, “Wouldn’t that mean you’re late to classes too though? That’s not like you” she said, belatedly realizing that that implicated that she was actually paying attention to what the other girl was actually like and making it seem like she cared when she definitely didn’t.

WAND WOOD - Pine

The straight-grained pine wand always chooses an independent, individual master who may be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious. It was at times like these where she wished that she was the same height as Amara, that way she could stare down at people as she glared at them. “Yes I’m sure,” She muttered lowly, not enjoying the fact that Zaccaria appeared to believe she was someone to be talked down on. Hestia wondered if the other girl thought she really didn’t understand what she had meant, because that would mean she was greatly underestimating her. Which was something she would surely have to fix the next time they spoke, as she had a feeling she wouldn’t truly get the chance to clean up this time. “That’s exactly why I want it.” Sure she was small and appeared soft, but at this point she thought her sharp tongue would have cleared up any misconceptions about her. Apparently she was quite wrong about that. “If you knew me then you would know that it is exactly the sort of thing that actually catches my interest.” The words weren’t a lie, as she had plans that were surely going to need some darkness to achieve. 

Perhaps she had judged this particular little mouse a tad too quickly. Intrigue picked up as she passed the girl the book, her eyebrow quirking up in contemplation of her. “And you find it wise, especially after the recent goings on here, to display a pronounced interest in something that someone might view as suspicious?” she asked. Of course Zaccaria knew that Hestia wasn’t one of Grindlewald’s brood and she doubted that she had been accepted into the pureblood elite which made it all the more interesting. It was one thing for Zaccaria to look at books like these out of pure fascination, after all it was simply a business endeavor for her, but completely another for someone else to do it.

“I would,” she said thoughtfully. Maybe she could talk her father into it. They had owls, of course, but you couldn’t cuddle with an owl, and there was some appeal in having a dog. It would also suit her reputation, especially if she found one of the little fizzy ones. Still mulling over the thought, she took a mental inventory of her appearance - blushing a little despite herself when Ari came over with that comment. It was enough to have her finger-combing her hair into a braid, which would have to do until she could clean up a bit more. “I could say the same to you,” she replied as she finally stood up, slipping her shoes back on and gather her remaining things from around the room. “Is the coast clear? I hope I have time before breakfast to go tidy up a bit more.”

As Zaccaria pulled her boots on she eyed Ji-Min trying to make her hair look somewhat presentable and smirked, “I know I’m a decent witch darling but never has that entailed the ability to peer through walls” she said, zipping the boots up and standing upright. With a sigh she gestured towards the door, “You go first and I’ll follow in about an hour. I’ve got History of Magic and I very much doubt that Professor Binns will even notice that I’m gone”. She wasn’t really learning anything anyway. History was her best subject and as such she had already torn through the book numerous times. It definitely didn’t hurt her feelings to miss a class she knew she would be bored in.

Ji-Min wasn’t a heavy sleeper, so as soon as Zaccaria began moving, Ji-Min woke up. She just stayed still, peering between nearly closed eyelids to watch the other girl’s movements. She had never been emotionally involved in any of her flings before, and it was disconcerting to find that she was getting emotionally attached to Zaccaria. It was just something to ignore for how, however, because Zaccaria clearly wasn’t interested in anything more serious, and Ji-Min wasn’t going to let herself look like a fool or end up with a broken heart. “I don’t think I said anything about snuggling,” she said with a shrug, sitting up and stretching. “If I wanted cuddles, I’d get a dog. Do you have everything you need?”

Good. She wasn’t getting any ideas. Zaccaria moved from the edge of the bed and scooped her wand off the floor. “You’d actually be rather cute with a dog” she mused, turning back towards her companion. Her lips pulled into a smirk as she walked towards the other woman and bending to whisper into her ear, “and bedhead does rather suit you”. Quickly she pulled away, turning so that she might slip her shoes on before making her exit. Truth be told this wasn’t something that she ever saw and though she knew she was likely a bit of a spectacle herself this had to be the only perk of actually spending the night with someone. The vulnerability of it was intriguing.

Her eyebrow twitched, a clear sign of annoyance on her part. “Sorry, I’m afraid that I don’t quite understand what you mean by ‘artsy Ravenclaws’-” She said with air quotes. Hestia might have been in the art club, but that by no means defined who she was. In fact she’d only joined the club as a means to pass time, finding that she wasn’t too bad at it. “Care to elaborate?” Depending on the other girls answer would depend on how long she decided to continue talking to her, though the conversation already appeared to be taking a downhill turn with that statement alone. 

“Well how kind of you.” She sneered, not bothering to appeared pleased of thankful. Though she did find Zaccaria’s last statement rather interesting, she decided not to comment on it. It wasn’t as if Hestia was afraid of what the girls answer would be, but rather the opposite. She was worried that the girls answer would rather enrapture her, causing her to to become entangled in a world far darker than she intended to be apart of, though she may already be. 

Zaccaria only had so little patience for stupidity. Weren’t Ravenclaws supposed to be the smart ones? “Oh darling, nothing is fun if you have to explain it. You’re a smart girl, i’m sure you can figure it out if you just think about it” she intoned, brushing a strand of hair from her shoulder as she stood from the chair where she had sat. There wasn’t much left in the library that could entice her anymore and this particular plaything wasn’t as fun to play with as she had hoped that she might be, “Remind me, what was it you wanted with a book of cursed objects? A little dark, don’t you think?”

Zaccaria had a set of rules for this sort of thing. She would not allow herself to be weakened and bogged down by emotional ties. Women were difficult to ensnare but she lived for the chase, the triumph and then eventually tossing them aside when she had gotten what it was that she wanted. The biggest rule of avoiding attachment was never EVER sleeping in the same bed and of course the peskiest of the sheep in her flock had made her break it. It was with an exasperated sigh that Zaccaria threw her hands up in the air as she searched the room for her wand. Of course she wouldn’t be able to escape the room before the other girl woke up. “Don’t get used to this. I don’t snuggle” she said, settling onto the foot of the bed. As she did so she heard a tell-tale clank onto the stone floor as the wand she hunted rolled from the bed.

Hestia’s mouth twitched a bit, slightly annoyed at being called ‘my sweet’. “I could ask you the same question.” She retorted. It wasn’t as if she couldn’t just look at a different book and check that one out later, but now she was curious as to why Zaccaria needed the book herself. The Ravenclaw mainly just wanted the book so that she could be prepared in the event she came across a cursed object in the future, as she was sure the possibility was of it happening was fairly high. “Though i suppose we may have similar answers.” 

Zaccaria quirked an eyebrow at the idiocy of the other girl’s musings, “You must be one of the artsy Ravenclaws” she quipped, closing the book in front of her and passing it to Hestia, “Here. You need this more than I do. And for the record, darling....I sincerely doubt our answer would be the same”

“That sounds interesting,” Logan said. The words were only half true, because when it came down to it, Logan was more of a doer than a reader. But if they were going to read anything, a book on curses would be one of their top choices. They moved through the water to get a little closer to Zaccaria, shrugging. “Not bored. I just wanted some fresh air, and I like the water. The castle is too stuffy these days.”

“What else is to be expected of five hundred plus people being crammed into one space together?” Zaccaria mused, thumbing the spine of her book before regarding Logan, “How are you not freezing? The weather hasn’t warmed up yet and most aquatic spells are utter garbage”

Logan’s brow went up a bit, but they didn’t comment at first. They didn’t know Zaccaria well, but she was pretty, and she was a pureblood, and she wasn’t annoying, so she met all of their preferences when it came to flirting. “Well see now you’ve made me want to get your book wet and it wasn’t even on my radar before. I’ll squelch the urge though. May I ask what you’re reading? I wouldn’t want to disturb you.” That wasn’t entirely true but they weren’t going to get on Zaccaria’s bad side either.

“An old text on curses” Zaccaria replied, cocking her head to the side as she regarded Logan before setting the book aside. Her father had sent it to her to read. If he wished he could sell it and get a decent amount out of the correct buyer, but it certainly wouldn’t be a top seller. Books usually weren’t, especially when one could just as easily purchase a cursed item. “Why are you swimming anyway? Are you that bored?”
