Occupy Cooper Union

Anyone in New York following this blog–the tuition at Cooper Union, my first home in New York and one of the last great democratic institutions in Manhattan has just gone up from 0$ to 20,000$.

The students have occupied the president’s office and there’s a protest now. The Mayor’s there.

Get over there and show some support if you can. People will need it.

Cooper Union was a place where anyone from any race, creed, color or economic background, could go to school if they could just make good enough work, was a rare example of a place trying to be a real meritocracy. It meant a lot to me and a lot of other kids from the wrong side of the tracks. Would hate to see it die.

I have decided on the best way to address the situation.

In the US, we speak English and do a lot of English things because we were once a British colony. But our major allies in the Revolutionary War against the British were the French.

Now I do not mind the English cousins at all, but their great virtue and flaw is that they're really good at making fun of bad situations without actually doing anything about them.

-

The French, on the other hand, are distinguished by their militant and near-humorless defense of their pleasures. You can pry that wineglass from their cold, dead, decadent hands and not a second before. I suggest everyone spend the next 4 years being more French.

Stay up all night, plot in the dark, talk in bars, wander the streets, make inscrutable films, force children to read philosophical novels about pain, throw things, be super-hot, curse the gods, sneer, paint, go to parties with perverts, smoke, drink, and conspire.

I understand this will be easier for some of you than others, but there's no other way forward.
