thinking about this specifically and how I love art as a conduit for magic, but also how at the other end of the spectrum you have violence as a language. in the roman perception of how the pantheon works you've got this transactional aspect to it (also why they were so happy to worship other people's deities, because hey if someone manages to communicate with divinity better, it's worth a try - a very simplified explanation), which forms a particular idea of worship, but I find folk magic much more interesting. being part of the natural world, instead of being something set apart, the veil between human and Other is thinner.

I think I want the theme of my books to be the role of art at the end of the world. two art pieces made me think of this: euripides' bacchae (god as revenge, and an allegory to the way a plague of ideas - violent, murderous - spread) and mussolini's face on the palazzo braschi (who famously hated art and was bored in museums, but who understood the idea that control through art is a very important way of maintaining power.

capitalism realism is my least favourite contemporary literary genres, and I think I gravitate in general against art of this type; it doesn't diminish its value, of course, and it's incredibly important historically to be able to see the everyday reality of people from a certain time period, but it reinforces the idea that there is no escaping capitalism, and that this is the only system that could work, which I myself refuse to believe in.

mura collects stories as payment. at their core, stories are wisdom - shyrein and ts'ehate are often worshipped together, life and knowledge, moon and sun. and in return, sure, she fixes the issue: she negotiates with the Other, going into its domain and assessing the threat, and, when left with no other option, vanquishing it. but she also tells stories in return. she is a bard, first and foremost. she connects to magic, to the world, through music, but more than that, through tales told in rhyme, the oldest of traditions. mura is a trickster: she is made for radical change, for bringing the end of something, for the marquet square busy with foot traffic, but which can never be a home.

as cynical and aware as she is of the muck and the mire and the systems of power that keep people oppress, she is at her core a radical optimist, because to me that is what life is: both the natural disaster, and the life that springs after. the birds who take lit branches and drop them in dry areas of wood and set it on fire to feast on the insects that flee the flame, and the new growth that raises from the rich ashes.

evrenna braids mura's hair in the morning. already the veil she wears like ordained by the gods is back into place, the jewels adorning her head blue this time - everything about her obscured, an enigma, a pit of darkness opening to swallow whole the light. mura is bare; the heat of the desert has baked her skin golden, but she has not touched the water left for her to wash. their prophetess is a thing of spun gold and simple cloth, morning star in name, and yet all she does is lounge and sing when told to.

"i'm going out today," says mura, not quite saint in the early morning. she does not wince when the fingers combing through her hair tighten to the point of pain, does not blink at the cruelty of nails biting into scalp. evrenna's laugh is the song of a blade.

"don't go far," a concession, moulding to each other like water. the grip turns gentle once more, petting along the crown of mura's hair, the whisper of silk as she moves to enfold her in her arms entirely. "i need you with me. without you, i forget to hope."

as with plenty of things when mura is involved, the answer is that it depends. she can actively feel the emotions of everyone around her, this passive thing she cannot control, and so she's pretty good at recognising want in any of its forms. she's only interested in the genuine though, because those are the stories she wants to hear.

so if the other person is more open? flirtier? that's how she's going to be. bards and poets are her favourite because they love with their chest bleeding, and mura very much is that kind of romantic deep down, whether she likes it or not. but if the other person is more reserved, she has no issue with being proper (within certain limits); she was raised as a princess and then as a queen, she knows all about etiquette and propriety... even covered in the blood of the monster she's just killed.

in private with her closest friends there are no secrets, and especially rahela will know all the gossip, though.
