Giving his friend a coy smile, he leaned in close to whisper in his friends ear. âCanât tell you all my secrets. Gotta keep some to myself.â Levi was merely teasing. He did hear about the things that happened with Ursula, he was halfway across the city when it happened however. âOh? So youâre getting injured just like you did back home? Hope its for a good cause.â

âif itâs gross and personal, i donât wanna know, so thatâs fine by me,â zane said, though he knew levi was only teasing. âhey, hey, i didnât get injured that much.â a blatant lie, but hey, props for trying, right? âof course itâs for a good cause! youâve heard of all the villain attacks around here, right? i keep getting injured during those, but only âcause someone else is gonna get hurt if i donât.â
( @zeldazooo said if you're dreaming are you dreaming of me? )
really, zane should have seen it coming.
growing up, his only example of relationships came from his mother, and that was one of the worst examples anyone could provide. zane knew that, and so heâd done his best to stay far away from romantic relationships of any kind. it was easy for the most part, since he couldnât think of most around him as anything but annoying siblings.
they keyword being most.
zelda was different. he treated her the same way he treated most others, like some sort of protector, a guy who liked to have fun with those around him, and that was already strange enough. according to his mother, she was the enemy. she referred to the lings as the skellingtonsâ pets, and that they were guilty by association. yet no matter how he treated rex, he could never find himself being mean to zelda. he couldnât even imagine it.
no, that was a lie. he could imagine it. he just didnât like what he saw. zelda didnât have as tough a shell as many of the other halloweentown kids did. she was always smiling, always happy, and he didnât want to take that away from her. at first, he told himself that it was because she was weak and that it wasnât worth it, but that didnât account for how he actively spoke to her, how he made sure he was nice to her rather than ignoring her like he usually would. then he told himself that she was friends with most of his friends, too, so it made sense for him to treat her as a friend.
that was eventually what he settled on. he refused to think of her in any other way, not when she looked at him with those adorable eyes, not when she laughed at something he said, not when the wind would flip her hair in front of her face and he definitely did not want to move it away for her.
he was able to suppress everything, and once he was in auradon, he was able to forget about his not-crush for a while. he would deny it until his dying breath.
then she came to attend school with the rest of them. heâd been so focused on everything else going on at the time that he didnât think of how he used to feel. it was just fun spending time with a friend.
or so heâd thought.
fast forward to when his girlfriend left him without saying goodbye, taking everything that was hers ( and probably some stuff that was his ), and he couldnât help but retreat to his old ways for a bit. part of his anger was because it was the end of a relationship, but the other part was because just leaving without saying goodbye was a thing his mother would do. his motherâs example was part of the reason heâd been hesitant to start a relationship in the first place and sheâd known that.
then zelda found him tearing things apart like he used to, and her presence alone was enough to calm him down. not entirely, because he was still too heated to get over it in a matter of seconds, but it was something. it felt the same as when they were growing up, when just one look from her could make him freeze completely.
yet he once again forced himself to tuck those feelings away. he convinced himself that he was just emotional and lonely, that he was only asking her to the dance as friends.
a few months later, his newest wound now healed, he found his thoughts drifting over to zelda more often. he wasnât even trying. he would be in the middle of class and his mind would start daydreaming on its own. it was worse when he went to the prep school and actually saw her rather than just talking to her via text or phone calls.
she could be doing the most mundane thing and he would think to himself, âfuck, sheâs beautiful.â
it was embarrassing and he refused to acknowledge it because no, he didnât have a crush. that was absurd. zelda deserved better, anyway, and she probably didnât even like him in that way.
so he would continue pushing his feelings away, keeping at her at a distance. his daydreams were the only time he let himself indulge, and as far as he was concerned, it would stay that way.
( @milliicent said they left us alone, the kids in the dark. )
shock wasnât home. again. this wasnât surprising anymore, and zane had learned long ago to stop staying up in the living room to wait for his mother to come home, to make sure she was safe. on the off-chance that she did come home early, sheâd tell him to beat it and go to bed so he wasnât in her way. and that was nothing compared to the times she had company.
most of the time, he was back by dinner ( because he was the one who usually had to make it ) and didnât leave afterwards, but tonight he had. the dump was a favourite place of his, not only because it was solitary, but because he could find useful bits and pieces that people had otherwise deemed useless. that was where heâd been tonight, and it was also the reason heâd come home with a stuffed teddy bear. it was a little worn and its right arm was about to come off, but it was something. it wasnât for him, anyway, so he wasnât about to fuss over it.
sneaking upstairs, he confirmed that his mother was, indeed, out once again. not that she would wake up if she was home. she usually passed out, drunk as anything, and didnât wake up until at least midday. he just preferred it when she wasnât there. the houseâs atmosphere seemed just that little bit lighter that way, though it was most likely his imagination. the place was as dark a dump as any other home around halloweentown.
he stopped by the door to millyâs room, pausing for a moment before opening it cautiously. he didnât want to wake her up. he tip-toed over to where she slept and pulled her blanket to cover her properly before setting the stuffed bear down beside her, right near her head.
he assumed she was past the days of them keeping each other company when they didnât have anyone else. she was too nice for him, and he probably deserved to be sitting in his room alone at night anyway, but hopefully the bear would be some sort of small comfort.
once satisfied with his present, he left, closing the door softly behind him.
âhow did everyone know?â she puffed out her cheeks, shaking her fists playfully at zane. âi donât understand â i didnât even know!â
âbecause you were so obvious! everyone but you and dex knew!â zane laughed, poking her fist. âwe were just waiting for you two to realise it yourselves.â
Levi let out a laugh. âYou says escapades like its a dirty word.â Not everything in his life was dirty. Well, at least when he was alone. His father on the other hand tended to make a mess out of everything. âZaney Waney, how have you been, Iâve heard whispers here and there.â

âme? sounding dirty? never,â he said with a laugh. his eyebrows rose. âwhispers? whispers like what? that sounds ominous, you know.â though he was sure it couldnât have been that bad. probably. he didnât think heâd committed any crimes for a long while, so he was safe on that front. âiâve been alright, though the hospital knows my name and phone number and email and address by heart, so thereâs that.â
Levi scrunched his nose. âHandsome? Definitely not my type.â He teased. Levi rubbed the back of his of neck, slightly guilty. He had been in Auradon since early July. âWant the truth or my well crafted ruse?â He asked adjusting his glasses. Walking along with Zane he sighed. âI got here and wasnât ready to face some people, so I hit up the Casinos and made a few friendsâ

âgood. no offence to ya, man, but i donât wanna be your type,â he said with a light laugh. at the question, he just gave levi a look, as if to say, âwhich answer do you think i want, dude?â. needless to say, he was glad when levi told him the truth anyway. ânah, i get what you mean -- gross, say no more. i donât need to know about escapades.â
Levi jerked around, slightly startled. âWell, Well, Well what have we here?â Levi asked a slow grin on his face. âZaney waney.â Levi knew seeing a familiar face would make all the difference in his sour mood. Nothing like an old friend to lift your spirits.

zane laughed as levi jumped around, but said nothing of it. âyep, itâs me, as cool and as handsome as ever.â he pretended to straighten his collar, just to show off. âwhen did you get here?â

âUM, EXCUSE ME -- you are not an icky little sister, how dare you, and youâre welcome. i have no idea what you mean by that last bit, but okay.â
at zaneâs words, milly uncovered her face, now frowning dramatically. âyou knew? what the fuck do you mean âyou knewâ?â she put her hands on her hips, puffing out her cheeks.
zane stared at her, trying to figure out if she was serious or joking. â...everyone knew. it was so obvious! besides, iâm your brother.â he gave her a smug smile. âi know these things.â
Settling in seemed way more tedious. He had been hopping beds with random men in order to avoid going to the prep school. Levi could just be spending more time in the casino or even getting laid. However, it was time to man up and start school. He was walking to the prep school slightly irritated that the receptionists were being so rude to him and Frankie. âLook can someone Please tell me where the prep dorms are? I keep getting stink eye from officials.â Levi asked.

zane had been heading home from work when he walked by the prep school and heard the familiar voice. he hadnât heard him in a while. with a grin, he rushed over and nudged him in the side. âask and thou shall receive, my man,â he said.
Zelda stared over at Adrien, trying to figure out what he was thinking. âMaybe he doesnât like the food you feed him?â she guessed. âIf cat food is anything like dog food then I canât blame him.â she said, making a gagging noise at the thought.Â
âtrust me, if adrien didnât like the food i gave him, he would tell me. heâd snub his nose at it and start scratching the table leg in defiance. heâs annoying that way,â he said, but he was grinning. âmy kitty-catâs spoiled.â
