Seyni Awa Camara (born c. 1945) is a Senegalese sculptor, from the Jola ethnic group. She was born in Oussouye, and currently resides in Bignona. Via Wikipedia

Seyni Awa Camara (born c. 1945) is a Senegalese sculptor from the Diola ethnic group whose monumental figurations reference the mystical qualities of motherhood in her community. She was raised by her mother, who was also a potter, and who taught her sculpture when she was a child.

She creates sculptures in clay in her front yard, then fires them in an open-hearth kiln before displaying them around her house. The pieces, ranging in size from 12 inches tall to 8 feet tall, represent personal symbols.

She has authorized the use of bronze castings of her work since the terracottas are too delicate to travel.

Seyni Awa Camara (b 1945, Senegal) is an octogenarian African sculptor, whose mystical healing figures speak of motherhood, magic and the forest spirits who inform her daily practice.

Born into a family of artisans and vessel makers, Camara was introduced to the use of clay by her mother. Yet even as a child, her approach to the material was individuated, and strongly guided by a connection to the divine. Although she originally concealed this figurative practice, her activities became known locally; and, with the support of anthropologist Michèle Odeyé-Finzi, brought her to the attention of a wider audience.
