higher quality still under cut
really inane observation but after finishing rgu a little while ago. nanami is THE character for ppl who thought mlb was extremely juvenile & disjointed and were disappointed that chloe didn't get to keep her miraculous & have a redemption arc. rgu sound of the summer
“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”
— Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg commenting on how weird gendered defaults in entertainment are, and why we should think twice about them. Excerpted from this longer original post. (via 360degreesasthecrowflies)
formative years? aren’t they all?
okay, you know what? Running away shouldn’t be a crime. It shouldn’t be dangerous, either. Any kid should be able to leave their parents if they want, for any reason. No I’m not kidding.
“But Rue, where will these kids stay? Do you want them on the streets?”
of course not. In an ideal world, a kids would have multiple adults other than their parents they could look to for care, but I recognize that that will never be a reality for every single child. So: youth shelters, if they have nowhere else to go. There should be clean, warm shelters where anyone under 18 can stay for as long as they need, no questions asked. (And of course shelters that aren’t just for kids, but we’re talking about youth rights right now)
“But Rue,” I hear you say, “what if some moody teenager runs away after an argument?”
First of all, I’d rather a thousand moody teenagers run away than one abused child be trapped. Second, so what if one does? A kid needs time away from their parents, so they leave. The vast majority of them will get some time to cool down and then go back home, and if they don’t want to go back, period? Then nine times out of ten, they have a good reason. (Because yes, as hard as it is for you to believe, kids are humans who have common sense.)
“Okay, but what about the one time out of ten the kid doesn’t have a good reason?”
Then the kid doesn’t have a good reason. It doesn’t change anything. If someone wants to break up with their partner because of something stupid, you wouldn’t say they legally shouldn’t be able to. (And if you would, then you’re just a bad person.) No one should have to be in a relationship, romantic or otherwise, that they don’t want to be in.
i have been thinking about it and i am going to start sharing the occasional fundraiser for palestinian students on this blog.
for context, since last november-ish i have been volunteering with a team helping students in gaza (and recent refugees) find international scholarships, which carries particular weight because some countries will help evacuate students who have a scholarship to one of their institutions. for the most part we try to find full tuition scholarships that also cover living expenses, but when a student does get a scholarship, there are often extra costs for things like travel/visa expenses/health insurance/etc., and there aren't a ton of resources to cover that. we also fundraised last year to cover application fees for undergraduate applications to the uk, and we'll probably repeat that for this upcoming cycle. our main goal is connecting people to existing funds, not so much raising funds ourselves, so these fundraisers should be relatively few, but at the same time we are not very well-equipped when we do want to fundraise, so if you can share literally anywhere that would help a ton.
right now we have two fundraisers running:
help abdalbari evacuate and finish high school, for a fifteen-year-old who has received a full scholarship to a uk boarding school and needs to pay for a guardian service so he can have a legal guardian in the uk (required for underage international students).
help gazan scholarship students reach their universities, for four masters students who have received scholarships and need help closing the gap between the scholarship amount and the actual realistic costs of moving to/living in a new country.
obviously the possibility of evacuation is uncertain, so if the students aren't able to evacuate, the funds will be distributed to other students or saved for the next application cycle. the need far outstrips the available resources, so literally anything helps.
thank you for reading!

I fucking love this video

Got around to finishing Danganronpa 2 so here's my matching lineup!! Excited to finally get to know who the hell these characters are after YEARS
I do legitimately think that alot of people don't properly remember how much being a kid sucks because one of the primary things that living like that does to your brain is make you forget what it's like. I think it's possible that one of the things which makes adultism so successful as a form of opression is because it comes with a built in mechanism to make people forget what it was like to be on the other side.
Extremely fucking funny to be so into the Hot Pretty Boy Mobile Game with the incest trope and then try to justify your desire to keep playing by being like "Okay so, when he calls you his sister during sex, I believe he means like, sister in arms" like either stop playing the Incest Game or just be like "Okay yes this is not real and I want to fuck the hot pretty boy," it's so funny when people finally find their morals clashing with the part of them that are like "This fictional thing is fun" and rather than try to resolve the contradiction they're like okay here's my convoluted nonsense explanation to settle my cognitive dissonance
I can't find the tweet that said this but there was something I read a bit ago that was like, I forget the exact wording, but like "It's so funny when someone who's generally anti-taboo kink finally stumbles across one they're into and they start bending over backwards trying to explain why their enjoyment is an exception" or whatever
Saw a post that said "if you call yourself a misandrist then I know you're weird about trans women who don't pass" and like. Those are women. Like if someone is a piece of shit to non passing trans women that's transphobia. Not some made up oppression for the men. Trans women are women. Stop trying to claim otherwise.
By saying trans women who don't pass are affected by misandry you have become the one being "weird" about trans women who don't pass
