Naturally with the Pride month like animation two dichotomous genres of posts have formed:
• it’s so cute! Guys like my post 5 times please!!!
• wow so cool hey tumblr can you explain the big red button next to you with “ban 100 transfemmes” on it (me I’m this one)
the way the ISAT fandom continues approaching the topic of the island, its culture and its portrayal from a strictly watsonian perspective continues to piss me off
you can't diegetically explain your way out of the racist implications of portraying fantasy france as better and more progressive than the fantasy version of its real-life colony in your fan works
The Island is intrinsically linked to the practices of Wish Craft and a Universal religion that had wish-making practices powerful enough to where Siffrin’s wish alone was fucking with the rest of Vaugarde’s
The Island has a lot of overlap with red’s presence in the game, almost like the island and color’s disappearance are connected.
There is an entire storyline wherein Siffrin is so traumatized by the revelation that his culture is still out there with other survivors of the aftermath of the island disappearing that he routinely jokes about croissants and carries around a random coin for “some reason”
The main antagonist of the game is another survivor of the island’s disappearance who became overran with grief and swore off the future for everyone and everything because he could not bear the thought of a loss like that ever again.
The central event that governs the entire conflict of ISAT is the island disappearing. It’s so obviously a bad thing that it happened. It is a tragedy that haunts the entire narrative. The main character barely has a sense of self because their sense of self got ripped away when they were a child on a boat playing a prank on their mom. And that sense of self is understood by practically no one alive.
In what world would erasing a whole culture be a good thing? Even if Island culture was somehow Secretly Evil But in a Suspiciously Orientalist/Anglocentric Way, would it matter? Are we to say Siffrin cannot love a culture that was flawed? But, from what we do know of the island, it’s almost all neutral or complementary worldbuilding to existing countries - never spoken in bad faith or given a reason for disappearing. It’s a tragedy that didn’t need to happen and shouldn’t have happened.
Island stuff is very much death of the author territory for me because so much points to any remnants of the culture still being archived, that it is in fact worth celebrating like any other culture. If the island was secretly horrible, then what does that say about the fact that the House of Change mysteriously has a bunch of Island-language text and iconography? Wouldn’t that make the game’s central utopic setting also problematic in that argument? Yeah every culture sucks and is horrible the end!… of course that’s not what is happening here. id5 is real weird about stuff like the Island and Euphrasie tbh but like, if you’re going to write an intentionally vague major story plot twist that has very specific real-world implications, you can’t be surprised when people question why it is infact so vague ingame and you seem so authoritative about a mystery you designed to be a mystery
I interpret the futility of bringing the country back like grieving a dead loved one. Nothing you can do can bring them back necessarily but that does not mean your grief is invalid or that your dead loved one must’ve actually been Horrible Actually. And you can infact live the rest of your life cherishing the memories of your loved ones and allowing new memories to form even in their absence (although in this case the Island’s memory or lack thereof complicated that metaphor.)
The last thing ISAT would ever be is a story that encourages repression. Yep kill all your memories of your stars and universe! Ok sure yeah except that’s how we got here, ISAT exists because it is infact impossible to kill all your memories of your stars and universe and you will drive yourself insane doing so.
Always fascinated with what levels of reading comprehension people can cook up these days but “the Island was evil actually” is fascinating in a uniquely sad way to say the least. It’s like the Chara Undertale discourse almost but like 10x more racist
reblog game tell me a girl character youre obsessed with (men you headcanon as women are not allowed)
Silk Sisters ❌
• Asserts Phantom as a woman/sister based on a dubious line of dialogue serving as sole evidence
• Aligns Lace/Phantom as bound by the legacies of the Weavers and GMS’ obsession with daughterhood
• Doesn’t really parallel anything in specific besides Silksong’s general trend of relational titles. There’s like, Sister Splinter? I guess?
Silk Siblings ✅
• Affirms Phantom’s gender identity
• Deconstructs the essentialism of GMS’ lineage and shows that Lace now has the freedom to carve her own path in the world beyond at the end of Silksong
• Parallels galore: Lace is a narrative parallel in many ways to both Hornet and the Hollow Knight. Phantom I’d say parallels Broken Vessel and the Knight to a lesser degree, both of which of course being similarly genderless/unknown. Lace and Phantom being silk constructs are akin to the vessels of Hollow Knight - collectively referred to as the Siblings in shade form. There’s also that the ending where THK is killed in Hollow Knight but Hornet enters the black egg temple is called Sealed Siblings
It appears the TADC finale is getting leaked through a Brazilian script and some screenshots of important scenes.
In the meantime, I’ll have TADC-related tags blocked on Tumblr and I suggest anyone else weary of spoilers do the same. I won’t be posting anything related to the finale until the theatrical release, so for all intents and purposes, my blogs should be leak-spoiler free
I should clarify I will not talk about the finale until the 19th as well (and this was my plan since the theatrical announcement), just that given the urgency of this I wanted to mention this now for leak period. But yes, my blogs will be a spoiler safe zone until the YouTube release of the TADC finale. Until then, the nefarious secret notepad file with my thoughts on the finale will be secured on my laptop somewhere

On Jax Amazing Digital:
I think a heavily traumatic experience can do numbers for your ability to connect and resonate with others. And in this sense, clearly Jax’s character is predicated on a major traumatic event that shaped the trajectory of his life. Maybe he forced Ribbit into abstraction. Maybe he ran over a child like I saw a theory say. Who knows! But something fucked him up bad. And instead of living with the consequences or grieving in the aftermath, Jax makes his grief everyone else’s problem. “I suffered something horrible, so now you will as well” is what I would say is the thesis of his character.
And as someone who’s witnessed several “abstractions” in my life, so to speak, the best step forward always was to keep going and keep being positive. That’s never an easy ask of course, but evidently it’s something other people in the Circus are capable of like Ragatha/Kinger. And the others are willing to share that solace with Jax, to find meaning in a stagnant life. What ultimately makes Jax the “villain” here, then, is his refusal to change and his refusal to believe in a world beyond what he had before.
Jax fucking sucks but for a reason. I enjoy seeing him suffer don’t get me wrong, but I can sympathize with him, somewhat. And I think the ending is leaning towards something big for Jax (perhaps the humble estrogen). He is grief’s ultimate manifestation and, as someone who sometimes feel as if their entire life has been grieving, I know how to handle situations like this and well, it’s certainly not the Jax way I fear
TLDR: I hate Jax, but in another life, I could’ve become him. He is a cautionary tale for grief more than anything else
Bought myself a Euphrasie plush given I’ve always yearned for more tangible ISAT merch and she’s probably a top 3 from ISAT for me (Mirabelle>Siffrin>Euphrasie for reference)
Euphrasie is a fascinating character in the sense that a lot of my appreciation for her comes from headcanon and theories (shoutouts islander Euphrasie theory). But I’m also a Dess and Gaster truther so that doesn’t surprise me and something something death of the author
She’s a character I’ve considered selfshipping with? I mean, tall pretty woman who’s collected and knowledgable and of course, transgener. She also has a bit of a freak side (not in a sexual way of course) and is sinister/cryptic in a way that reminds me of myself. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t pondered what a polycule dynamic of us would look like given Claude exists. But I find a lot of solace in her character and the implied grief of what she stands for. Peak “do I want to be her or do I want to be with her?” character
All of this to say I did write about taking Euphrasie plush on a date in the comments of an insertdisc5 post and fuck I feel like I have to commit to that bit now. She will be here in August according to Makeship, best get the candles ready!
A ponderance about our good narrative haunter the ISAT country (what I like to call INOV, the Island North of Vaugarde)
When the island was erased, what became of those on it? We know Siffrin was on a boat when it happened. I imagine King and Croissant Incident Guy were as well. Yet… Siffrin remembers his mom. Surely she was on the island during its erasure (or maybe she too was traveling?) there is someone in Vaugarde who forgets all about their sister so perhaps Siffrin’s mom indeed was travelling if she could be remembered. But then, perhaps his other parent was lost to time, if he ever had one
The amnesia of the erasure is not absolute given that Siffrin still remembers some form of Universe religion and its practices (plus Memory of Memories allows them to read INOVian language, and Euphrasie probably knows it too but check out my INOV Euphrasie posts for that 👀). What determines what was and wasn’t erased then? I suppose it’s just Vibes in a literal sense, but certainly something to be explored more in fan works
A Noelle Deltarune and Isabeau ISAT interaction would be funny if only because these two say INSANE shit about their romantic interests. Aw yeah I want Susie to push me in a locker aw yeah Siffrin you were so cool when you told me I’m a worthless loser - what is wrong with these two I think they would make great friends and fashion partners
Project Hail Mary movie was pretty good, just watched it last nigh- what do you mean they nuked Antarctica in the book
Knives Chau is an example of bad-faith representation that I still resonate with for reasons the author didn’t intended
She’s very much just, an orientalist stereotype of a boy-crazed petite Asian girl who wants to be obsessed and serve a man, at least in the original canon. But idk, something about her vulnerability really resonates with me. That she’s a caricature doomed by the narrative to suffer, and she’s still allowed to kick ass when she’s heartbroken. I can relate to her a lot with my BPD, her backlash to the rejection is played up for comedic effect I’d wager but these are emotions I do relate to with BPD. Having such a strong fear of abandonment and “splitting” hard when someone uses you as an object that you find yourself becoming a different person. This is a painful reality that permeates my intrusive thoughts a lot when faced with rejection, and it can be hard to figure out which one is the “real” you
I need to watch Takes Off still but I’ve heard good things about her there. She’s very passionate about music and very knowledgeable in it and that helps her find leverage in the industry. It’s very cool to me that, even if her older iterations were, well racist, she gets to be more of a person now.
It’s tough at times struggling with Moral OCD and engaging in media you find problematic - say what you will but most of Scott Pilgrim is a caricature fest and I think it knows this. But to see past the caricature and find solace in a character doomed both by the narrative and the culture of which she was written by is captivating to me. And I’m really glad Knives’ character got to become more than that original stereotype because she is without a doubt my favorite Scott Pilgrim character
Also dyeing your hair to signal a character arc is always peak fiction I should do that irl
I love the Teto Plush, she's very friend-shaped
...Which makes it all the more disheartening when I've seen this innocent cute plush be weaponized for so much "ironic" fatphobia. Fat/chubby Teto potrayals have been more commonly recently which is really cool!!! I think most Vocaloids are portrayed with a very specific conventionally attractive thin body so the variety is awesome.
But I've also now noticed this trend where people joke about Teto being this total glutton with insatiable hunger. "Don't let her into your kitchen she'll eat everything haha!" People like Miku calling her a fatass in comics. Gifs where the joke is that teto plush is massive compared to other smaller vocaloid plushies. Gifs where the joke is that teto plush's weight crushes things. This is just fatphobia! I feel like I'm going insane! This is such run of the mill fat character stereotyping and it's baffling that these sort of jokes with Teto are so common-place. It makes me horrified to even check comments on places besides maybe Tumblr because if you as so much give Teto a baguette in art people are going to start making a joke about she's a disgusting women who eats too much.
Women are often policed so much for their bodies and to see this be so common with Teto is really disheartening (Teto isn’t necessarily a woman - chimera woah - but most people will depict her as such/like one). I grew up seeing my older sibling treated like this any time they dared eat more than bare minimum calorie level. That the fat body is inherently worthless and a moral failure, so you better bend over backwards to stay thin even if it means destroying yourself. To see something of that nature turned into a haha quirky joke for one of my favorite characters really sucks. God what is wrong with people just let teto be fat and beautiful you weirdos
draw more vocaloids fat too it's good for you
teaching her important history
So this is a random Luka figurine I got from a gacha machine I found in the wild. I was going for a Rin but I didn’t want to actually spend that much money so I just took the Luka as my fuckass daughter
Anyways since then I went ahead and bought a Rin plush
She too can now learn important history
The TADC theater thing is funny to me (in a bad way). This is a show that’s notably completely free to watch with a bunch of merch to buy should you want to support the creators. I think that models works very well. So like… why are they releasing the finale 2 weeks early but only in theaters and in a select few countries? It seems antithetical to what got a bunch of people into the show in the first place. Completely free and on YouTube at any time for you to watch. And this is just going to create a 2 week war zone of spoilers for a majority of fans who cannot see in advance. It’s a scummy model certainly. I will probably go see it, but I’m annoyed I can’t lie. It would be cool if it was a dual release? Like the theater release also comes out on June 19th, but having it early introduced this weird limited run business model and introduces a scarcity that a show like TADC really didn’t need and doesn’t benefit from at all!
There’s now an official justification and… yeah I don’t know if this “risk” is worth it. I think if you want to do something like this for Glitch, do it for like, Knight of Guinevere green light premeire, not a show finale. I certainly don’t want the future of indie animation to be this kind of setup. I think the fact stuff like Iron Lung can exist is awesome, but this is still a fandom mine field given it’s built on a preexisting story. I’ll hand it to Glitch to getting it down to 2 weeks and pushing for just 1 certainly, but still it’s going to be a very… interesting strain on the fandom for a time.
It’s a shame I’m seeing people get called entitled/chronically online/etc for having criticism of this choice. It still feels antithetical to what TADC built itself on, in my opinion. I hope this pans out well for indie animation’s sake but I’ll remain cautiously optimistic for now
I should create a definitive post for all my Phantom Pronoun/Gender Thoughts (of which there are many). This is my personal Kris Deltarune pronouns and my Roaring Knight is the Exhaust Organ Needolin exchange
I think metatextually there's a lot of parallels Phantom has with other characters that point to them being non-binary more than anything else, but I feel most of the discussion around them is the like 4 crumbs of literal written evidence in-game. But this'll be a trench to explore another time
