Do you have any tips on writing villains?
It is occurring to me now that I have never actually written a villain. All of my stories have revolved around internal human issues–AKA the villain is self doubt, death, mourning, relationships, etc. With that said, I’ll try to answer the best I can with resources and what I have found make the best villains. The first and most important thing you need to ask yourself is why is your villain a villain. Making them bad just because you need a bad guy isn’t enough; you have to know why they’re bad, why they’re angry, why they are taking the actions that they are and what they hope to gain from them. Even if the rational doesn’t make sense to most people, it must make sense to them. There should be a cause and effect relationship between their life and mindset and the actions they are taking. If your bad guy seems to be arbitrarily bad and acting out for no reason, people likely won’t buy it. You don’t want the villainy to seem forced.
With that said, remember that you are explaining and not justifying the bad behavior. You can tell us why people do bad things without saying it is okay to do bad things.
