Day 12

I decided to take a break over Christmas, from the 25th - 2nd, and for the last couple of days I’ve been focusing on catching up on my reading for Object Orientated Java Programming. Which, I’m happy to say, I’m all caught up with now. 

I’ve also decided to start doing an hour of programming every day, outside of Object Orientated Java Programming. I’ll probably alternate between doing a udemy course of Java and on Web Development.

But I haven’t done much (if any) coding since the 2nd, so I don’t have much to show right now.

Day 2

This is the second day in a row where I didn’t get has much done as I planned. In fact today, I only got a few videos done on The Complete Web Development Bootcamp. 

It’s probably just because it is Christmas time, but it isn’t any less annoying.

Day 1

Every time I sit down to start coding, something happens and gets in my way. So I didn’t get as much done today as I had hoped. 

The two resources that I’m focusing on right now are: The Complete Web Development Bootcamp via Udemy, and Object Orientated Java Programming via The Open University. The first one I’ve been doing for a few days, and the second one I’ve been doing since October. 

Today in The Complete Web Development Bootcamp. I finished section four where I was learning about HTML Tables and Form. The tables were easy enough, but when it came to the forms, I had a bit of trouble getting ‘minlength’ to work. But I’ve fixed it all up now. 

In Object Orientated Java Programming I finally finished up Unit 4 by learning about composition. Composition is about the relationship between classes, like how when one class references another class. An example would be of a rocket class, that is made of of a triangle class, a square class, and when you combine the triangle and square class you get the rocket class. 

I also watched there two (x, x ) about someone’s personal experience of becoming a programmer without any formal education, and the other about how we need more people to learn code and why you should learn code.

Day 0 - About Me

The general reason behind why I want to learn how to program is because ultimately I would like to become a software engineer. To get there I plan on either becoming a web developer or a java developer and start my career there, and just build myself up from there. I think the hardest part is going to be getting my foot in the door without a CS degree. 

I say without a CS degree because a) I already have a degree within Psychology, however I haven’t taken it anywhere. My reluctance to apply for grad jobs and my own mental health make that degree pretty useless, and b) I probably will complete a degree in BSc(Hons) Computing and IT via The Open University. But I’ll probably be applying from jobs before I start that course, or will only be within the first semester. 

For the last year I’ve been telling myself I’m learning to become a programmer when really I haven’t. I have all the resources but haven’t completed any of them, and haven’t started a lot of them. I work full time and my mental health tends to get the better of me. 

But, I’ve decided to keep a blog of my progress, in the hopes that it motivates me to actually learn. The first two courses that I’m doing is The Web Development Bootcamp via Udemy, and Object Orientated Programming in Java via The Open University. 

Hopefully by this time next year I’ll be starting to apply for jobs.
